I totally agree with Elizabeth about Dr. Coker. If only we could install him instantly into the Health Ministry! But it's not just the doctors and health workers that need to be educated about the dangers of surgical birth--mothers need to know the risks as well. Doctors really downplay the risks of surgical birth, emphasizing that the mother won't have to go through labor and discounting any benefits that labor has to offer both mother and baby. The bad thing about a surgical birth is that you are recovering from two life-altering events at the same time, doubling the difficulties of each. It's hard enough to cope with a new baby *or* recovery from major abdominal surgery, but to combine the two when it's not necessary is ludicrous. Birth is something that a woman does, not something that is done to her. It is an important rite of passage that shouldn't be usurped.
Vicky, take Elizabeth up on the pool. Trust me. I labored 80 hours before Ahmet was born via surgery and I couldn't have done it without that pool--it saved my sanity. It's easy to set up, easy to take down, and deep enough to provide some real relief.
Good luck! And remember that birth is an emergence not an emergency!

Hakan - why can't more Turkish doctors think like you? Thank you for sharing your feelings about birth - it is a "miraculously normal" event! You know, with Turkey's wonderful commitment to breastfeeding, if they could just understand birth they'd be an amazing country, "birthly" speaking!
Vicky - I'm so glad that you're glad! Well, we could talk to Fatma about it... I still have the birth pool in my closet! She knows how it turned out for me, maybe she would be curious; if it would help, I could try my best to be there to help both of you.
TGIF,
Elizabeth
