Thanks so much for translating that article - it is so interesting and is certainly provides great ammunitions for all these people who are asking me why I'm not having a Caesarean!!As I told Elizabeth yesterday, I'm really happy to say that I have changed doctors - I am now with Elizabeth's doctor who seems to be keen to let me deliver naturally, although as I said, it's my first birth, so I completely reserve the right to yell for epidural if it all gets too much! Am I correct in thinking that Gas & air isn't available in Turkey? Do you think I could buy a paddling pool to take to hospital?!!! I don't think they'd let me somehow - ah well, maybe with baby no 2 I can travel down to Marmaris to see the wonderful Dr Çoker for a water birth!!Just over 2 weeks to go - wih me luck!Vickyx

Dear friends,Here is a tranlation of the SUPER-INTERESTING article that Rose sent us:Punishment for doctors who perform unnecessary caesareans"Caesarean" is not safer than a natural birth"
Minister of Health Recep Akda» said that they are going to take important precautions against doctors who lead their patients to a caesarean unnecessarily, mentioning that they'll start the legal, administrative judging process. Recep Akda», who headed the "Transformation in Health Program- Province Department of Health Services Evaluation Meeting", gave guidance about natural birth. Mr. Akda» said that the caesarean rates are quite high and that they as a ministry are doing what is necessary to decrease these rates.
Mr.Akda» spoke about changes that they are making concerning the funds in the Social Security Foundation. He said "The money spent for caesareans is not going to be higher than the money spent for natural birth". He added "Most of our citizens want to have a caesarean operation, but having a caesarean operation when it is not needed is a great medical mistake. These parents are heavily harming both their babies and themselves. It increases the risk rate for that birth and the coming possible births. Caesarean is not a safer than a natural birth".
Mr. Akda» reminded the meeting participants that when you have no other choice, a caesarean is an indispensable medical obligation. He said "We are going to give much attention to this topic. We are going to question the doctors who unnecessarily lead their patients to a caesarean. Legal actions will be taken against them. We are determined about this and our people shouldn't be misled by their doctors; if a woman wants to have a painless birth there are other methods available".
Mr. Akda» described efforts in regulating the closing down of private clinics. He said "Even if the doctors working in public hospitals work in the private sector as well, we have new measures for those who serve the Social Security Foundation which have been given to the cabinet. We haven't finished talks with Yök (foundation for higher education), yet I think we are going to put forward the law about this in the next legislative term". He also added that the necessary actions in local districts will be taken soon, too.
Governer Hasan Basri Güzelo»lu, AKP Samsun Congressman Suat Kil¹ç, Mustafa Demir, Ahmet Yeni, Fatih Öztürk, Rector of OMÜ (Samsun University of 19th May) Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Akan,Ministery Of Health undersecretary assistant Dr. Ekrem Atbakan, Province Health Deputy Dr. Mustafa Kasapo»lu, AKP province deputy Ali Akyüz, ministery Office deputies, general managers, local health representatives, and administrators attended the meeting.

The title says something like... "Doctors performing unnecessary
cesareans will face retribution/ punishment"
