Re: [naturalbirthturkey] Ankara Infant Deaths

You are very right about all you have written.
Thats what we are fighting for at the moment:
The babies are all aware of everything. Beffore birth and after birth. They need care, they need love, they need being touched, they need to know that the only person they know and can trust is there with them any time they need them. They only know their MOTHER.
The resarch say that even if they are very little to survive they they need a contact with their mothers. These babies recover much better.

Yes to all  BUT:
The culture in Turkey is not ready for such a revolution.
The mothers are not ready, the doctors are not ready, the hospital staff is not ready, the hospitals are not ready.

At the moment we fight for the immidiate bonding of the mother and baby right after birth. I , myself , ask my friends and midwifes to lay the baby on the mothers chest right after birth before they cut the cord, but I cant persuade them for suc a vital need of the baby and mother.

So there are a lot to do for the future.

Is there any awareness at this hospital that along with the hospital care that premature/ill new borns need, that they can get a great deal of healing by spending extensive time with the mother, tucked between mothers breasts, skin to skin, feeling her rythmic breath, her smell, hearing her voice, nursing if possible. That even the most fragile of babies should have as much contact with the mother as possible as this can give the will to live and also give the mother some empowering contact with the child and a sense of connection even if the child dies eventually, rather than being stuck the other side of a hospital window feeling helpless and afraid and if the child dies they feel like they didn't even have a chance to connect or give love.

The hospial in Ankara is the biiggest maternity hospital of Ankara and Turkey.
There were 28 deaths in the last few days. Bu I dont think that this is because of any problems. I see this as a coincidence. Most of the permature babies come to this hospital. Its like the last point center.
A pediatrician from our hospital was there for a course for three months and he was impressed with the organization.
So I think this is not a continious problem.

I found this news VERY disturbing:

THAT many babies died with little or no explanation?  I just have a hard time believing it.  In Ankara, a very "modern" city!

What do you all think?

Happier thoughts for a healthier Türkiye,
Elizabeth
