Re: [naturalbirthturkey] Re-sends

I think we also need to keep in mind that even if a woman were to choose
natural birth here in Turkey (and I have met many who would want it) and
even if the doctor truly believes that he or she is providing natural
birth, it more than likely isn't. We really need to make a definition
between "vaginal" and "natural", because the births I have
attended/heard first-hand accounts of may end vaginally, but are far
from natural. This seems to be due mainly to the lack of training on
the part of the drs and nurses regarding the physiology of normal birth
and how to support women (non medically) during this time. This is an
issue stemming from the training which they receive in medical school
and also the position of the dr in Turkish society as infallible. There
are some very big political, social and financial issues at work here
which we must understand very clearly before mounting an informational
campaign. It will not be as simple as telling women how great natural
birth is or how risky cesarean can be. The drs also need to understand
it, and truly believe in and work towards helping women who want to
deliver normally. For that to happen, someone in a position of power
must be educating /the doctors.

/In short, I completely agree with Tamahine regarding free choice. The
big job now becomes simultaneously educating women and providing an
opportunity for free choice (ie drs and facilities which truly support
natural birth).

And I just now realized that pretty much everything I have just said is
on our first agenda, so I thank you all for allowing me my soap box!
