Gentlemen,
I am originally from India and I have many Indian friends, some living
in this country for many years, who are strict vegetarians, Most do
drink milk and eat yogurt but many do not eat fish or eggs or any
meats. Some of the healthiest and most energetic people I know who are
in their 50's and 60's are strict vegetarians. I never was, even as a
younster in India, but in my father's house we ate goat meat,
chicken, and fish only every now and then, never on a regular basis.
Only after I came to the US as a teenager to go to college did I take
up eating meat on almost a daily basis. In my family we ate eggs
frequently but many Indian Brahmin families never touch any of these
foods. I think a lot depends on the environment one is from. In cold
countries perhaps because of the paucity of vegetables, humans evolved
eating mostly meat from animals they hunted. But presently, a
significant minority of Germans and other europeans seem to have
become vege'tarians. I think people following a pure vegetarian diet,
over centuries learned how to get the various vitamins, including B12
which requires special attention if one is following a vegetarian
diet, and more so if you follow a Vegan diet in which no milk, other
dairy products and flesh are eaten. Its sometimes a bit easier to get
the balance of vitamis, amino acids etc with some fish and eggs.
Especially in countries modern processing methods and agricultural
practices seem to drain away all the nutritional content from the
vegetables and fruits we get in regular grocery stores. When I was
travelling in India this February, I can tell you the foods tasted a
lot better, Unfortunately modern agricultural practices and large
agricultural corporations are gradually taking over there also.
Cheers,
Seerwise.
