I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 2 and 1/2 years old, I am now
22, so have had the condition for approximately 20 years and still waiting
desperately for a cure or some kind of device to aid in the treatment of
Diabetes atleast.
There has been many discoveries of new, easier devices used to treat Diabetes,
but whenever I ask my hospital doctor or when my hospital doctor tell's me of
some development, I am never qualified for it and if I want it, it is not
provided for on the NHS (Uk) and have to pay for it myself and I just cant
afford these things.
Me and my mum always get very excited when a possible cure has been discovered,
yet there has been many possible cures discovered but the length of time for
medical trials takes years inwhich it is forgotten about.
After 20 years with Diabetes it seems as thou I have somewhere along the line,
lost hope in me actually being cured, but on the other hand am just putting up
with it until a cure comes along.
I havn't been doing regular blood tests for years, to much disappointment of my
hospital doctor, but find it imposing on daily life and the soreness of my
finger tips when I actually do, do them is seriously uncomfortable, my hospital
doctor told me of a new device which is worn like a wrist watch and records
regular blood sugar levels, but yet again I do not qualify and there's been
problems with these new devices in medical trials and if I want one will have to
pay.
I am seriously wondering now, if a cure is found and practised on existing
Diabetics, whether it is going to become like gold dust and patients having to
go private in order to qualify and expect us to pay ridiculous amounts of money
for the cure.
In some causes inwhich many people are born with Diabetes and loads of people
are diagnosed during their lives who otherwise are healthy (like myself), are
going to have to pay a small fortune for treatment for a condition which we/they
never asked for.
A cure would be greatly received, dont get me wrong, but I'm not going to kill
myself working toward paying for it, I'm already out of work because of other
conditions related to Diabetes (i.e. Depression, weak immune system), why should
I suffer anymore, I just want a happy, healthy, normal life in a world which is
not full of money grabbing, greed and filled with a little more compassion.
