Dr. Faustman submitted a Letter of Intent - a written request asking permission to submit a large grant to the foundation (in this case to help fund phase II) - and it was rejected by the JDRF. This rejection is despite the successful replications of her mice research resulting in regeneration of islets in adult end-stage diseased mice from 5 independent labs, the growing number of supportive research projects for regeneration in humans even in longstanding diabetes, and the progress that the Faustman lab has accomplished with the blood assay and automation process.
Planning for phase II is not in the works as the lab is busy with phase I and they are booked through 2008 continuing to collect blood samples from diabetics and controls.
It is estimated that $25 million is needed for phase II over a 3 year period and it is estimated to start in mid 2009. Therefore, fundraising is critical now.

I don't know what Joshua's question is, I have tried to look for it in the messages in this group, but can't seem to locate it. Can you re-state the question, and I will try to get an answer.
What I do know is that Dr Faustman recently was rejected AGAIN by the JDRF to even APPLY for a grant. I just don't don't understand the reasoning for this. I am told that Phase I is going well as expected, and planning is already in the works for Phase II, in which $8 million will be needed in Jan 2009. In the past, the ONLY thing that held back the research is lack of funding. Everyone asks, "Where did all the money go?" Well, keep in mind it costs about $30 per second to run a medical research lab. And the money raised by the Iacocca Foundation doesn't get released to her all at once. There are criteria that Dr Faustman must meet and prove in order to go on to the next step.
I am doing all that I can to raise
money for this research, and also contributing money myself. It is a hard and lonely effort. The research needs more support. We need everyone's help. We're not going to get it from the JDRF or ADA. And the I.F. cannot fund the whole $8 million.

Deanne, thanks for the information. I did not know that Bernard's blog was the place to go for information on Dr. Faustman's trial. Can you answer Joshua's question? Can Bernard?

can each of us get done in our lives when we are constantly bombarded by interruptions?
