Hi all -
I've been trying to find an answer to Josh's question. I reached out to the Iacocca Foundation, as they used to have a person (Marc Davino) that did monitor the Yahoo Group and would help coordinate answers with the Faustman lab. (For those that might not know, Marc has moved on from the foundation.)
However, the focus of the Join Lee Now initiative has shifted. Initially, the only effort Join Lee Now fundraised for was the Nathan/Faustman trials, and therefore, many resources were dedicated to getting the word out about her efforts. During that time is when this group was stood up. However, now that they have decided to try to fund other researchers as well, and since they've never have had experts on staff to answer questions on the science, they've decided to defer all questions to Dr. Faustman directly, which I think makes sense. That's really what they were doing before anyway - they just were the middle man trying to help coordinate.
Just as a reminder, this Yahoo Group was set up for the following purposes per our description:
Since Join Lee Now has expanded to include fundraising for other researchers, this description is no longer completely correct. We need to decide about the future of this yahoo group's charter. Will this be a group to discuss Dr. Faustman's work solely, as I suspect many folks would hope, or will this become a venue to discuss whatever initiatives that Join Lee Now supports? Perhaps the group needs to be split into two, this one just for the Nathan/Faustman Trials info and perhaps a new one for Join Lee Now? I welcome discussion on this topic.
I personally got involved here as a champion for Dr. Faustman's research, and in doing so, became involved as the first State Captain for the Join Lee Now campaign. Thankfully, the trials are now underway! I think we all knew the day would come that we'd be in the "blackout" period where the trials would be happening and we wouldn't be hearing much while they were working diligently and gathering data. As much as we want the latest info, it just wouldn't be appropriate to get all sorts of data while it's still being gathered. However, Josh's question is valid.
Please see Dr. Faustman's direct response to me below regarding both the answer to Josh's question, as well her explanation on the lab's position on questions/answers and the latest info on the trials going forward. Below also includes , the Iacocca Foundation Director Dana Ball's response regarding the Iacocca Foundation's position on the matter.
Thanks,

Discussion group for JoinLeeNow.org supporters and all others seeking a
diabetes cure through research by Drs. David Nathan and Denise Faustman
and their team at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). This group's
purpose is to share information and spread awareness of JoinLeeNow.org
and the Nathan/Faustman human trials.
The Nathan/Faustman team has identified the defects in the immune system involved in the destruction of insulin-producing cells and is working to develop a therapy that stops the autoimmune system from attacking these cells. Dr. Faustman cured type 1 diabetes in mice by stopping the autoimmune attack and allowing insulin-producing cells to regrow.

Re: [nathanfaustmantrials] When will the phase-1 trial be complete?
Stacy,
Because of the labor involved in answering questions (you may know) we focus on the research and focus on keeping our web site updated. We do not control what the government posts but do control what we can post on www.faustmanlab.org that has a section of most frequently asked questions. We are performing a very rapid Phase I trial – most last 3-5 years. Oursss is predicted to last about 18 months and thus completed in about 1 year. I do notice the government web site lists “estimated” to perhaps they allow +/- a year to be an estimate!

Stacy, We actually don’t get involved in these questions and prefer all inquiries go directly to Dr. Faustman. I am copying Dr. Faustman with this email so you can discuss a solution to this problem. Maybe there could be a contact to MGH and Faustman’s lab? The foundation staff and board feels that since none of us are qualified science or clinical trial experts it would be best to work directly with Dr. Faustman and MGH.
Hope this helps,
Dana

Hi Dana,
Just curious if anyone at the foundation looks at the yahoo group anymore. Marc used to help answer some questions, I suppose by coordinating with someone with the Faustman lab to get answers. I try to answer when I know the answer, but I have no idea on this one.
Thanks!
Stacy

Can someone tell me why the Clinical Trials database record for the
Nathan/Faustman experiment
(http://www.clinical trial.gov/ ct2/show/ NCT00607230 <http://www.clinicaltrial.gov/ct2/show/NCT00607230> ) says they will be
done in July 2008, but the Spring 2008 newsletter on the FaustmanLab
web site says the experiment will take 18 months? And which one is
right? When will the first clinical trail be complete?
