Marc,
I hope everyone realizes that the phase I clinical trial is not expected to result in anyone being cured. The low dose(s) of BCG that will be administered during this phase I must first show safety before going onto phase II. No safety issues are expected seeing that BCG has been administered to millions of people and has a good safety track record. The uniqueness of this trial is that the scientists will now have the ability to measure the effect of BCG during phase I based on the automation of the blood assay that they have been working on. At best, we hope that the low doses will have a decreased effect on the targeted autoreacitve T cells in all of the patients. They will be collecting valuable data inlcuding TNF alpha levels and C-peptide that will help them proceed to phase II to increase dosing intensity and/or frequency of BCG with the goal of killing off all of the targeted
autoreactive T cells. I believe that there is a shot at this point of having islet regeneration once all of the targeted T cells have been depleted. We don't know if it will be permanent or last 6months or 20 years. Research for compound 2 is needed to be done as well.
This leads me to a question. Now that the Iacocca goal of $10 million has been raised to take this research through phase I. Is the join lee now campaign going to continue to help raise funds to take the Faustman/Nathan project through phase 2 over the next few years?

It was in response to a posting titled “Awfully quiet on the Faustman front.”Marc-------Greetings from The Iacocca Foundation, On June 15 we released an additional $1.8 million to Dr. Faustman from JoinLeeNow funds. Dr. Faustman provided an update last week which has been posted at http://www.iacoccafoundation. . We will be sending a more formal announcement via our next e-Lee electronic newsletter shortly.org/research_ news_type_ 1_diabetes. html If you do not receive e-Lee please visit http://www.iacoccafoundation. and sign up there.org/type_ 1_type_2_ diabetes_ research_ contact.html Thank you for your support and passion.Regards,Marc J. Subject: [nathanfaustmantrials] Re: I'd like to see a Faustman research blog Forgive me for asking, but what about someone from the Iacocca
Foundation ... they undoubtedly have more info. than we do, and it would
be nice if they could share any news they have on how the plans are
progressing.
