Yes, there are many encouraging research projects that have immerged during the last year or so. It is most exciting that many of them support Dr. Faustman's discovery of eliminating the underlying autoimmune disease and regeneration of islets for a cure. The Brazil study in particular demonstrated for the first time not just a slow down of progression of the disease prolonging the honeymoon period in early onset patients but, the role of one’s adult stem cells in islet regeneration and ultimately the recovery of insulin function. This is exactly what Dr. Faustman's lab has proposed for so long. However, the treatment that the Brazil study conducted is dangerous, often used in cancer patients. Bone marrow ablation has a 20% death rate ( 2 of the children in this small study had life threatening complications and recovered) and would never be an acceptable form of treatment universally.
With that said, Dr. Faustman's lab will be attempting a treatment to eliminate the underlying autoimmune disease without toxic immune suppressant drugs or obliteration of one’s immune system or use of growth hormones for regeneration. It is a protocol that will be using a readily available, generic and safe substance. If it works, the treatment will be available for everyone. The research coming out in animals and humans from other labs only strengthens the Faustman/Nathan human trial project. Nobody is "ahead" of Faustman as nobody is trying a treatment like this. No news is good news and the Faustman lab is working on it.

This is just my opinion - but when I don't hear any news, I take that as bad news.
I have a feeling that this great technique in mice does not ring true in humans (which has happened countless times in previous experiments in diabetes history).
Just my 2 cents....

It appears that Dr.Faustman has fallen way behind the pack in regards to verifiable cure potential. I'll take any solution, if it represents a cure for my child. Dr.Faustman's research, which once appeared to be the holy grail, will hopefully be obsolete by the time the Faustman group is ready to go into human trials.

Subject: [nathanfaustmantrials] Join Lee Now's human clinical trials? I know this isn't the perfect place to ask this question, but i also
know there are a lot of Join Lee Now folks here, so I'd thought I'd
ask this:
What human clinical trials currently underway are based on research
funded by Join Lee Now or the Iaccoca Foundation?
Will Nathan / Faustman be the first human trials they have funded?
