NASW San Jose Unit
We are excited to announce the presentation of NASW San Jose Unit's "Stand Up
for Others" 2008-2009 award to California Assembly Member Jim Beall, Jr. during
our Social Work Month meeting on Wednesday, March 18 at 6pm. Assembly Member Jim
Beall, Jr. has a very long history of fighting for social justice, and standing
up for children, families, seniors, and the disabled. From his web site at
http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a24/Biography/default.aspx :
"Jim Beall, Jr., was elected to the Assembly in November 2006 with 64 percent of
the vote. His dedication to improving the lives of our children, families, and
seniors has led him to fight for better health care and the efficient delivery
of social services. These goals are reflected in his legislation and in his
committee assignments. As Chair of the Committee on Human Services since 2007,
he has focused on bolstering the Safety Net for our elderly, poor and people
with physical and developmental disabilities, and combating hunger.
"We have an obligation to provide every Californian with the opportunity to
succeed,'' Assembly Member Beall says.

"And it all starts with guaranteeing our citizens sound and accessible health
care, a solid public education, and a helping hand when they deserve it. If we
give our people a strong foundation, our state will reap its benefits for
generation upon generation.''"
Please come to the March 18th meeting at 6pm and meet a California Champion of
Human Services and Social Work ideals, Assembly Member Jim Beall, Jr.
We will also be presenting at the same meeting our Annual NASW San Jose Unit
Social Worker of the Year 2008-2009 award. This year's recipient Amy D'Andrade
has really demonstrated a commitment to social work and social work causes on
many levels.
Food and desert will be provided. We only hope you will bring your enthusiasm
for our social work profession and be inspired!
Thelocation of the March 18th event at 6pm in in the SJSU University Room in the
Old Caffeteria at San Jose State University see online map at

sent recently. This program is funded in part by MHSA dollars as a statewide DMH
program. The application deadline is March 24th. This includes a wide range of
mental health professionals. Over $100,000 are alloted to Santa Clara County.

Announcing the Mental Health Loan Assumption Program

Through a partnership between the California Department of Mental Health and the

Development, we are pleased to announce that a new loan assumption program for
mental health professionals is now available. The new Mental Health Loan
Assumption Program will offer up to $2.5 million in loan repayment funds via the

for the following registered, licensed or assistant/trainee employees of the
county Public Mental Health System:
• Psychologists
• Marriage and Family Therapists
• Social Workers
• Psy chiatrists
• Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners
Please note that there are some differences between the LMHSPEP and the Mental
Health Loan Assumption Program:
• To be eligible the applicant must be employed in the county Public Mental
Health System, in a hard-to-fill or hard-to-retain position (employment will be
verified)
• Up to $10,000 per year is offered to repay educational loans over a maximum of
six years, for a total of $60,000. Annual payments will be made to the
participant's lending institution after the verification of 12 consecutive
months of employment in a qualifying position in the Public Mental Health System
• Only educational loans are eligible for repayment
• The applicant may be eligible to apply whether currently employed full- or
part-time
o Full-time employment is defined as 40 hours per week or more
o Part-time employment is defined as 20 hours per week or more
• Loan payments will be sent directly to the lender
• Community involvement as an intern may count toward the community service
criteria
• Other pertinent information may be included in the personal statement, such as
experience in advocating for children or adults with serious emotional
disturbance or serious mental illness
To apply for the Mental Health Loan Assumption Program in Spring 2009, eligible
applicants should complete the LMHSPEP application and indicate that they are
currently employed in the Public Mental Health System by checking the
appropriate box on Page 3 of the application form. This application is available

Continuing Diana Ming Chan’s Legacy…

Diana Ming Chan is someone who helped me to see my true value as a social worker, and how much I could do with my social work degree.  I would tell Diana about my ideas and career aspirations, even my dreams about changing the world; she would tell me about how she was continuously coming up with new ideas and aspirations too, and how she believed that you could never be too old to create change.  Diana encouraged me to always pursue my dreams, and told me that no matter what, I should keep my passion in the forefront of whatever I do.

In her 54 years as a social worker, I'm sure she touched many lives other than mine.  During the short time that I knew her personally, she impacted me so greatly that I can't help but want to continue perpetuating the effects of her work by helping other young social
workers see their value in our community.

You can help to touch the lives of young social workers by donating to the Diana Ming Chan Scholarship Fund.  Help others realize their value, pursue their dreams, and help them change the world.

--Jennifer C. Tan, MSW
Co-Chair, Asian/Pacific Islander Social Work Council 2007-2009

Please forward this email and help us to carry on the endless efforts that Diana set forth to pave the future for the Asian/Pacific Islander Community and young Social Workers.

When your contacts send in their donation, they should include a brief note that YOU told them about Diana's scholarship (e.g. write your full name on a post-it). NASW will keep track of the referrals from you so we can send you our thanks and let you know about the lasting impact YOU make.

Many, many thanks in advance.

--the Asian/Pacific Islander Social Work Council

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today.  No amount is too small.  Our goal is to raise $25,000 so that the Diana Ming Chan Scholarship Fund can become an endowment.  In this way, the scholarship fund will continue Diana's legacy for many, many years to come. Donations can be sent to NASW Foundation, 750 First Street, NE, Suite 700, Washington, D.C.  20002.  Please make your check payable to:  NASW Foundation--Diana Ming Chan Scholarship Fund.

Hi all.

I am looking for a psychotherapy group for clinicians in the San Jose/Santa Clara area. A support group for clinicians by clinicians to discuss personal as well as professional growth issues. From countertransferance to existential matters -and anything else in between.

Please let me know if anybody is aware of such a group already running. Otherwise, I will start one myself if there is a need. Contact me if interested in starting one in the Lawrence/Saratoga Ave. area.

Thanks!

Check this page of info out.  It's local and low fees for non County workers.  If you sign up for something on-line (the only way now, I hear) make sure they rec'd your registration.  Otherwise, you will not get materials or the CEU's.  I think you should get a letter back confirming registration.  Good luck.

If you're currently a SJSU student, there are two ways you can request funds for attending a conference. One is the professional student development fund: http://as.sjsu.edu/asforms/forms/pdf/StudentProfessionalDevelRequestForm08-09.pdf
- that has 250$ worth for individuals
Also if you can get a group of students, you could request the fund through the social work graduate student association, hopefully they renewed their student org registration- more info : http://as.sjsu.edu/asgov/index.jsp?val=reqfunds
The request of the funds takes planning, which students didn't have much last year to work from. Let me know if you have any questions.

As for Students, If you are seriously interested in attending I would
ask on Freecycle for ticket vouchers, check w/ family and friends re:
airline miles, I would email UConn about assisting to coordinate
Homestays for other students coming with their students, put it on
your Christmas/Birthday Wish List to your parents.

I am giving up going to a different Professional Conference in NYC
the following week in order to attend.-Cheryl Kupras

All-After our exciting Unit meeting on Friday, I got more excited about
Politics and not only did I go and make a donation to NASW PACE but I
also decided to get more involved.

Each Year the Univerity of Connecticut hosts a "Campaign School" for
Social Workers who may be interested in holding Public Office. I have
always wanted to attend this and have been lurking on their website for
years. Well, today I registered to go to Campaign school in April and
I would love to have some company!

It is a nominal fee and FREE for students!

Hi!

I am happy to announce that the NASW-CA San Mateo Unit has a new home at Yahoo Group!
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/naswca_san_mateo/

This group is designed to allow local social workers (students and professionals) to communicate with one another. It will also be a way to find out about local social work-related events. You can choose when and how to stay in touch. You can also quickly scan new postings and browse detailed message archives.

I am going to transfer all of the e-mail addresses to the Yahoo Group in the next few weeks. The current e-mail list service will be discontinued on November 1. If you do not want to join the Yahoo Group or have any questions about the group, please drop me a line at suhliangou@...

Thank you,
Suh-Liang Ou, MSW
