                             Domestic Abuse in Upscale Marriages

South Bend, IN-The YWCA of St. Joseph County is proud to present Dr. Susan Weitzman of the Weitzman Center in Chicago for this year’s Domestic Violence Awareness Luncheon. The topic of the luncheon will be domestic violence in upscale marriages.

 Dr. Weitzman, a psychotherapist and the Director of the Weitzman Center, began researching domestic violence in upscale marriages in 1992 and found an unexpectedly large number of victims who were trapped by circumstances that are generally envied. She worked with and interviewed hundreds of women and eventually wrote the groundbreaking book, Not to People like Us: Hidden Abuse in Upscale Marriages. “Violence against women is not limited and defined by economic or educational boundaries” says Dr.Weitzman. “There is an entire population of women, who live in abusive homes, shamed into believing that abuse doesn’t happen to people like them.”

While in town, Weitzman will train the YWCA of St. Joseph County staff as it explores the idea of partnering with the Weitzman Center to provide services for upper-income victims.
