NAMI Texas (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Texas) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded by volunteers in 1984 to address the needs of Texans affected by serious mental illness. Currently, more than 3000 members belong to 41 local NAMI Texas affiliates. NAMI Texas is unique in its grassroots orientation and composition of persons diagnosed with serious mental illnesses, as well as parents, spouses, children, siblings, friends and professionals. NAMI Texas provides individualized educational curricula and workshops addressing the many needs of different constituencies. NAMI Texas also sponsors monthly support groups throughout the state. Ongoing support for families and consumers is crucial for coping with the day-to-day challenges of living with mental illness. Advocacy is a key component to improving the lives of persons affected by mental illness. NAMI Texas advocates for improved mental health services and access to services as well as a variety of issues specific to individuals living with mental illness.
