I'm newly diagnosed but I am reading a book about MVP (it's a bit
dated, but helpful). The guy makes a connection between the mitral
valve malfunctioning and the autonomous nervous system. He says that
is what causes people to have chest palpitation even when inactive or
at rest. The nerves get triggered and don't shut off at the right
time. So maybe that is what is happening when you are exercising. You
get your heart going, releasing hormones and endorphines and your body
gets the timing wrong and kicks into overdrive. I would suggest asking
your doctor and keeping your blood pressure in check. By no means push
yourself to frequently especially if this becomes the norm while you
are exercising. As of yet I have not experienced something of that
nature when I do my 4 day a week workout. I hope you get things worked
out.

My doctor just said that I definitely had MVP. He didn't elaborate or
anything. He told me to continue to exercise and not to stop my Weight
Watchers points plan. He didn't mention anything about regurgitation.
I didn't even know that much about the condition and he did not offer
any further discussion about the diagnosis. I had heard about reducing
the caffeine. I have 2 cups of coffee every morning. But I had quit
caffeine altogether some months ago and had all the other MVP syndrome
symptoms (that was before I was diagnosed). Thanks. Maybe I'll switch
to decaf. Do you think I should go to a cardiologist?

I can certainly understand where your coming from...
The biggest thing that has helped me is to cut my
morning coffee back to one cup and then limit
caffeine, chocolate, and carbs during the day. I have
felt better since doing this. My doctor wanted to put
me on a "beta blocker" which I denied because I had
not heard good things about them and wanted to
research it further. I chose to make lifestyle changes
in lieu of the "beta blocker" and all the side affects
you can have from them. There are always days when I
just feel exhausted and overwhelmed. I can however
tell you that a large percentage of people have MVP so
you are not alone! Did your doctor tell you if you
have regurgitation?

I'm training for a triathlon right now so I've been doing a lot of
intense exercising and nearly every time that i go anaerobic or just
have a high heart rate i get chest pains and my heart palpitates. I'm
not sure if I am pushing myself too much(although I don't feel like I
am) or if thats just a normal occurence when you have MVP. I was
wondering if this happens to anyone else, and if i should take a break
when that happens or just keep going until it goes away. Thanks :)

Hi everyone,

I was just diagnosed with MVP a month ago. I just mentioned that i had
had some chest pounding episodes the past week. I had the appt for
something else. Doc listened to my heart and ran a test... EKG (I
think). He gave me verapamil. He didn't talk to me about it. Said to
just live like before. I got a book from the public library about MVP
and just today found this group on the web. WOW! I am scared out of my
mind, confused, and in denial. The book lists symptoms and MVP
syndrome symptoms and I was blown away. All of those symptoms have
plagued me for 6 years and previous doctors diagnosed me with anxiety,
depression, stress....endless tests, MRIs, etc came up inconclusive. I
was medicated and then taken off meds because of the side effects. I
felt like I was getting on with my life just dealing with horrible
fatigue, anxiety, etc and after a change in insurance and doctor....he
listened to my heart on a random appt and said it was MVP. This doctor
had no records of my previous symptoms. I thought it was what all the
other docs told me...stress! I've only been on verapamil for a month
and I guess it's working. I feel relaxed or perhaps relieved that my
symptoms weren't just in my head. Does anyone else feel that way? I am
28 and a mother of two. I don't know what my limitations are with this
condition. The fatigue I have felt for so long suddenly makes sense.
My husband is really worried because this is a condition involving my
heart. He is very sympathetic now because he knows it is the condition
that makes me exhausted, anxious, and in pain (chest pain). But I
still feel so alone. I have searched for a support group in my area
but there is none. My doc wants to see me in a few months. Should I go
and see a specialist (cardiologist) before I see my doc? Please help.

You can use prescription drugs, but as I mentioned earlier due to their
side effects using them can be almost as scary as having high blood
pressure!
Fortunately, I discovered that a high percentage of health care
practitioners now recommend nutritional and wellness lifestyle changes
as the first line of defense to prevent hypertension and to treat high
blood pressure - often before they prescribe powerful prescription
drugs.

I had that problem... I have been placed on Beta-Blockers to help
regulate my heart rythm. The medication my Cardiologist & Doctor
prescribed is TOPROL XL, 50mg (lowest dosage). Talk to your
cardiologist/doctor about it if it continues.

Take care and God Bless.

hi melissa
iam really glad to hear that you didnt have any problems with your first
child. I hope this one goes good as well. My biggest worry is the fact that
for some unknown reason my heart just beats so fast! Out of control!
Especially when I do anything strenuous(sp). And thats what I worry will happen
when I deliver. Does your heart ever beat out of control like that?

Hello group! Like I said my name is Nicole. I have mvps. I have had
panic attacks since I was a small child but did not know I had mvps
until I was in the emergency room one night with a heart rate of 216
per min. I was reasured that it was not life threating but still feel
like that just cant be true sometimes! I will be 21 on august 30 and I
am 17 weeks pregnate. Wednesday I will be 18 weeks. I still have the
panic attacks pretty bad and the worst part is for some reason I am
petrified of needles! I was told I could not get pregnate but well I
guess they were wrong. Well today at 2:00 I go to the cardiologist to
have another eco done. Iam very tense about it! I pray all goes
well! Sorry for rammbling on for so long. I have a tendency to do
that. I hope I can at least find one friend out of this group. Maybe
lots. And get some well needed coping advice! Thank you.

ps: I can only use the computer once or twice a week at my
local library. Just incase I dont email for a few days.

High blood pressure doesn't usually have symptoms ... over 1/3 of its
victims don't even know that the killer is lurking inside them. It
quietly damages your heart and arteries.
High blood pressure is a factor in hardening of the arteries ... which
leads to a blockage and a heart stopped dead in its tracks!
Your heart is forced to work harder to circulate blood ... enlarging
part of the heart and weakening the muscle. One day ... pftt!
Over time, high blood pressure weakens artery walls, leading to a
bulging blood vessel ... or, even worse, a burst artery ... a stroke!
High blood pressure is involved in 77% of all strokes. Strokes that
kill somebody in America every 3 minutes.

YES! I have those "heavy beats" - I just heard yesterday to try to
cut out MSG in your diet... found in cheetos/pepperoni etc.... I am
going to try to cut that out and see if it helps... I get the "when
can I get off that treadmill feeling" everyday (sitting in a chair
relaxing!!).. not fun!

hello
yes i've had that problem many times.I dont know
what causes it because i'll just be sitting still too.
what i do know is that i've gone to the hospital for
it because i wasnt able to breath and they just say
that its anxiety attacks. It helps to cut caffeine
totally out though.i guess the rapid heart beats is
something we just have to deal with with mvp.

I have gone for 4 years without any meds other than an occasional
xanax. Well....my symptoms are back and today I went to the Dr. He
prescribed Lexapro 10 mg. a day. Truthfully, I want my life back but
am really scared of any adverse reactions. Have any of you or someone
you know taken Lexapro. I've heard good things and bad. I'm supposed
to start my first pill tonight. Any thoughts, advice, etc. would be
aappreciated.

Yes, I too have the gastrointestinal problems. If I feel symptomscoming
on my first response is to take Gaviscon (liquid) 2 tablespoons with
afull glass of water. Most often, my symptoms will subside and go away.

I used to have a variety of MVP related chest pains. Then my
caridiologist said to take low dose aspirin on a daily basis. He did
not say it would reduce the chest pains, but it has greatly reduced
the chest pains to a point that I hardly notice it.

Regular exercise like brisk walks, helps too, but don't overdo it.

I notice chest pains when my work gets too stressful or any time my
heart races.... I would say a roller coaster would be a heart
racer... It is very scary!!

For my own comparison reasons - do you have any children? Thank you!

hi- i'm not a doctor...just a man with MVP so i cant really explain your
symptoms.
Chest pains can be very scary. They can make one anxious. I get them
once in a while (like pin pricks).......................i had shortness of
breath
a couple of months ago that wouldnt go away for a couple of
months............my main symptoms are fatiqyue, depression, anxiety but it is
hard to know if
they are caused by MVP..........there are some good books on the subject of
MVBP> Worth reading.
     I hope you feel better..........ed
