Literacy Speaks! Interventions That Improve Speech Intelligibility and Promote Fundamental Literacy Skills for Children with Articulation Disorders and Apraxia of Speech (0.5 CEUs) presented by
Date/Location:
Baltimore/Towson, MD ~ February 8, 2008 ~ 8:30 – 3:30
Synopsis:
Children with articulation disorders and apraxia of speech are prime candidates for the approach defined in Literacy Speaks! Sound-error patterns exhibited by children with articulation disorders and apraxia of speech can be difficult to remediate and can also affect entire classes of sounds. Final consonant deletion, stopping and fronting are examples of sound-error patterns that affect sound classes. Studies have shown that, even with speech remediation, many of these children develop reading delays. Literacy Speaks! contains techniques that dispel the myth that incorporating phonemic awareness activities may jeopardize established speech-language goals. Literacy Speaks! addresses current treatment shortcomings by demonstrating how integration of sound-letter correlation and phonemic awareness activities can be beneficial.
