Dysphagia Practice: Taking Services to the Next Level of Evidence-Based Practice (1.2 CEUs) presented by
Tom Franceschini, MS, CCC-SLP
Date/Location:
Baltimore/Hunt Valley, MD ~ March 15-16, 2008
Synopsis:
Understanding the Esophagus Will Help You Better Understand What Happens in the Pharynx.
Traditional dysphagia practice relies on procedures such as the modified barium swallow (MBS), fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallow (FEES), and the beside assessment to diagnosis disorders. A combination of specific muscle exercises, maneuvers, compensatory postures, and diet modifications is then prescribed to manage.
A new body of knowledge has now emerged, however, indicating that dysphagia management needs to be taken well beyond traditional approaches if the highest quality of care is to be achieved. Divided into six lectures, this seminar will guide clinicians through dysphagia-related topics that have been largely ignored until recently. Discussed in-depth will be:
- Esophageal Screenings and the Role of the SLP
- GERD and LPR in Adults and Children
- Drug-Induced Dysphagia
- Frazier Water Protocol and the risk for Aspiration Pneumonia
- Oral Hygiene Protocol
- Xerostomia
