Differential Diagnosis Among the Dysarthrias:
The Rules of the Game

Saturday, April 5, 2008
Presented by Joseph R. Duffy, Ph.D., BC-NCD

Distinguishing among the dysarthrias is important within medical speech pathology practices, but the importance of doing so is often ignored in clinical training and clinical practice.
This course will address the substrates, clinical evaluation and differential diagnosis among the major dysarthria types (flaccid, spastic, ataxic, hypokinetic, hyperkinetic, unilateral upper motor neuron, mixed).
The value and contribution of distinguishing among types of dysarthria to the localization and diagnosis of neurologic disease will be stressed, but implications for behavioral management will also be addressed.
Neurologic correlates (anatomy and pathophysiology), associated confirmatory clinical signs and symptoms, speech and nonspeech assessment procedures, and the distinguishing clinical perceptual characteristics of each of the major dysarthria types will be described, illustrated, and compared.
Approaches to conveying diagnostic findings will be illustrated.  Numerous audio and videotape samples will illustrate the salient and distinctive clinical features of each MSD in a manner that will sharpen participants’ clinical diagnostic skills and understanding of the meaning of important neurologic speech signs and symptoms.
Program Statement:
This program will address the substrates, clinical evaluation and differential diagnosis among the major dysarthria types.  Audio and videotape samples will illustrate the distinctive clinical features of each dysarthria type in a manner that will sharpen participants’ clinical diagnostic skills and understanding of important speech signs and symptoms.
Participants will be able to:
  • Describe the principles and procedures of assessment, and the underlying pathophysiological bases of the major dysarthria types.
  • Identify the salient auditory perceptual characteristics of each of the major dysarthria types, and the characteristics that best distinguish among them.
  • State the localization within the nervous system of each of the major dysarthria types.
