The PLAY Project - Level I Workshop

This one-day workshop focuses on The P.L.A.Y. Project, a unique, community-based autism training and early intervention program. The model is based on the developmental theories of Stanley Greenspan, MD, known as the Developmental, Individualized & Relationship (DIR) Oriented Model – also known as “Floortime”. The DIR theory and research will be presented along with videotape case examples to help participants learn DIR strategies, methods and techniques. The session will help parents and professionals learn effective, low cost, and efficient ways to provide intensive intervention programming for young children (18 months to 7 years) with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and help them gain language and social skills.

Learning Objectives

Identify current trends and research in ASDs

Describe how “affect” drives growth and development

Investigate the importance of the neurological “comfort zone”

List and describe basic DIR (Floortime) principles, strategies, and techniques

Plan and implement DIR intervention techniques with children with ASDs

Carroll County Faculty:

Dr. Nellie Ruelos, Medical Director of Carroll Mental Health Care, is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and has been in private practice in Carroll County since 1999.  She is an expert diagnostician and a strong proponent of the holistic approach to the care and management of the ASD Child.  Her past affiliations before going into private practice:  Associate Medical Director of the Child and Adolescent Ambulatory Services at Carroll Hospital Center; Director of the Adolescent Psychiatric Services at Springfield Hospital Center; Director of the Deaf Unit at Springfield Hospital Center; Director of Adolescent Services at Greenwell Springs Hospital in Louisiana; Staff Psychiatrist at Sheppard Pratt Hospital and Taylor Manor Hospital.

Consulting Facilitator of the P.L.A.Y. Project in Ann Arbor, MI:

Rick Solomon, MD, medical director of The PLAY Project started in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is board certified in both General Pediatrics and Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics. Dr. Solomon is a member of the Autism committee for the Michigan Chapter of the Academy of Pediatrics, a colleague of Stanley Greenspan’s, a board member of the Interdisciplinary Council of Developmental and Learning Disorders (ICDL). The PLAY Project is now offered to more than 30 agencies in the Midwest and West Coast.
