Description
This seminar is designed to orient clinicians to the characteristics of patients with dementia at different functional
and cognitive stages throughout the disease process. Utilizing the staging framework, clinicians will gain experience in assessment and treatment planning to maximize positive clinical outcomes. This intermediate level seminar is recommended for master level speech-language pathologists and would also be beneficial to occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurses, social workers and other health professionals working with patients with dementia. Participants may earn 2.5 hours of CEU credits equal to .25 ASHA CEUs.
Objectives
1. Understand clinical characteristics of dementia
2. Understand the need for a differential diagnosis in the patient with cognitive impairments
3. Identify the stages of dementia according to common clinical scales
4. Identify behavioral and functional performance changes throughout the dementia disease process that correlate to the stages of
dementia
5. Utilize a patient profile to develop a comprehensive and individualized SLP assessment and intervention program
About the Presenters
Sharon Kurfuerst is an
Occupational Therapist and Senior Director of Education and Staff Development with Genesis Rehab Services. She has an earned Doctorate in Education and Professional Development and has presented and published at the university, state, and national levels on clinical and leadership topics in rehabilitation practice.
Garry Pezzano is a Speech Language Pathologist and Vice President of Clinical Practice with Genesis Rehab Services. He has over 20 years practice
experience in adult/geriatric rehab and a specialization in pediatric and adult swallowing disorders. Active in both ASHA and NASL, Garry has presented at the state and national levels on clinical, management, and regulatory topics related to rehabilitation in the long-term care industry.
