We are under a corrective action plan and have to come
up with a specific plan for missed sessions, including
those missed for field trips, assemblies as well as
the absence of SLP for any reason.
We are particularly concerned about small schools
where we are only there one day a week. We would also
like to know what other counties are doing. There are
no subs available in our small county. We would like
to know if we can incorporate into the IEP what
sessions or how many sessions will be made up, such as
a statement that no more than one session a month can
be missed, or we will not make up sessions missed for
field trip/special programs/class parties. We also are
pursuing having the IEP read 3 sessions per month,
which allows for make up as well as testing and
consultation the fourth week. I also asked the School
Affairs committee to look into this, as what the state
has asked us to do is not in the best interest of the
students. We have been told to pull the student
whenever we can to make up the session, even if that
is from music, art, or direct reading instruction. Or
we can go into the classroom at an unscheduled time,
which generally means we will be functioning as an
assistant. Can regular classroom subs be used, maybe
with a little training to do a review sesion? I don't
think it is helpful to the student, but it may be
better than stretching us so thin. Making up sessions
for slp absences results in reduction of services to
other students, as new and larger groups need to be
formed. Any suggestions would be welcome.
