Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in Dysphagia Treatment (What It Is and What It Isn’t)
Our guest and moderator of the discussion:
Mary Simmons, MA, CCC,SLP is a Speech Language Pathologist in the outpatient department of Baptist Rehabilitation Hospital in Memphis, TN. She was certified in VitalStim Therapy in March of 2003 and has since performed over 1500 hours of treatment in the outpatient, inpatient and pediatric departments of the hospital. She has spent time educating the community about dysphagia and the use of VitalStim to effectively treat the diagnosis. Mary is also a VitalStim Certification Instructor.
Ms. Simmons will provide a brief presentation outlining current theory and practice of neuromuscular electrical stimulation in dysphagia treatment. Afterwards, participants are invited to share information, questions, cases, experiences, etc.

From Annapolis and the Eastern Shore: Take Route 50 West to Jennifer Road exit (Exit 23A).
- for Acute Care Pavilion (Main hospital), Clatanoff, Edwards and Donner Pavilions: Turn left at the light onto Jennifer Road, turn right at the light onto Medical Parkway, and at next light bear right into the Acute Care Pavilion (ACP) garage.
- for Emergency: Go through the traffic light onto Pavilion Parkway, and turn right to the Emergency entrance. Park in the small lot in front of the Emergency entrance, or the ACP garage as noted above.
- for the Wayson Pavilion: Go straight through the light onto Pavilion Parkway. Turn left into the Wayson Pavilion parking lot, or use the ACP garage as noted above.
- for the Sajak Pavilion: Turn left at the light onto Jennifer Road, go straight through the light at Medical Parkway and turn right into the entrance.
- Emergency Department visitors: You may park in the ACP garage as noted above.
From Washington DC: Take Route 50 East to Parole exit (Exit 23). Turn right onto West Street then right onto Jennifer Road. Go approximately one mile, and turn left at traffic light onto Medical Parkway.
- Sajak Pavilion is to the left; for others, bear right at the next light and enter the Acute Care Pavilion garage.
- for Emergency: Go straight through the traffic light at Medical Parkway, turn left onto Pavilion Parkway, and turn right to the Emergency entrance. Park in the small lot in front of the Emergency entrance, or the ACP garage as noted above.
- for the Wayson Pavilion: You can proceed along Jennifer Road to Pavilion Parkway, and park in the small lot behind the Pavilion, or the ACP garage as noted above.
From Baltimore: Take I-97 South to Route 50 East, then follow Washington directions above.

Parking for Sajak Pavilion
The large surface lot across from the Emergency Department entrance is available for use by visitors from 4 pm-5 am. The small surface lot behind the Wayson Pavilion is available for use by visitors from 6:30 pm-6 am.
