Kitty suggested that it may be of interest to some readers of this group that we
have both been posting recently to Alcor Forums - http://alcor.org/forums
These forums include many topics of interest to cryonicists and life
extensionists and include a "Private Forum" which is only accessible (and only
able to be seen to exist!) by those who are both registered with Alcor Forums
and are enrolled as cryopreservation members with Alcor. Some of our posts are
on the public forums, but many of mine are unfortunately on the Private Forum
(much to our displeasure at its existence) because that is where the posts to
which I have been responding originated and that is where most of the current
controversy/concern is arising. However the public "Financial" forum does
contain some posts relevant to the situation described below.
The major concern is arising because Alcor has had the policy since its
inception of allowing enrolled members to be cryopreserved for the amount of
funds it was estimated to cost at the time of their enrollment instead of at the
(possibly much later) time of their cryopresvation. This policy was called
"grandfathering" and has incurred a constantly rising financial liability for
Alcor which was originally expected to be made up by the profits from membership
growth, growth of numbers of cryopreservations performed and volume reduction of
the costs of both. However, these growths and cost reductions are not occurring
either at all or sufficiently to resolve the underfunding deficit, so therefore
the Alcor Board of Directors has proposed terminating the grandfathering promise
not only for all newly enrolled members, but for all current members no matter
how long they have been enrolled and have paid yearly fees.
Any readers of this group with an interest in cryonics (which, rationally,
should be all life-extensionists - since afterall you will always be in danger
of no longer being able to sustain life no matter how quickly life extending
therapies come about) should want to read some of this discussion and the
related rest of the Alcor website.
