Paul wondered:
"Since all my attempts to copy anything from this file were futile (although I
did not attempt to resave the whole file in MS Word format which the full Adobe
8 allows one to do), I am curious about how Francois managed to get it into a
Word format which presumably is not locked for copying. --Paul]"
Well, you can print the file, then scan it with software such as HP Image Zone,
as editable characters in a word file. If the typeface isn't too obscure, this
usually works. But it's time-consuming for short quotes.

[Indeed. But that method has always seemed to me to be a very inelegant solution
to what should be a purely internal computer matter.
However, your solution prompted me to think of another possible way. The pdf
could be printed to a postscript print image file and then brought back into pdf
format via Acrobat's Distiller (which changes postscript print-ready files back
into pdf format). However, I just tried this and Adobe appears to have put the
locked information into the print image file so that it cannot be returned to
pdf format, at least not by Adobe's Distiller program. --Paul]
