Weekly Symposium at RRND and Upload to SelfSIP   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #1246 of 2104 |
Tom Knapp, publisher and chief editor of Rational Review News Digest,
had announced a few months ago that he and his fellow editors planned to
have weekly discussions on major topics. I had at least once recently
wondered what had happened to his plans. Today I noted in his weekly
web-only edition that he was disappointed that last week's topic had
drawn only one reply. My reaction was, "How did I miss that?" It seems
that in last Monday's web-only edition, Tom mentioned that the weekly
topical "symposium" was to begin the next day and would be located in
the in the "This Week's Symposium" section, way down near the bottom,
after his daily listing with brief excerpts from the day's most
significant news articles, commentaries and current audio/videos of
interest. I often pass by the web-only editions entirely (and
apparently did so last Monday) and never saw the Symposium reference at
all during the week because I never got that far in any of the emailed
editions.

Today, after making my comments in his symposium for this week (on
"symposiums at RRND" and how to improve them), I proceeded to write the
thoughts that his subject matter for last week brought to my mind.

The symposium for last week, which continues to be open to participation
was introduced by the following:
---------
Don't call us shy: For our first symposium topic, we've picked one of
the most controversial events in American history ... and it's no holds
barred.

The "9/11 Truth Movement" could be broadly defined to encompass all
those who find fault with the "official account," but there are
"Truthers" and then there are "Truthers." Alternative theories run all
the way from "there were partial cover-ups of embarrassing facts" to
"the attacks were planned and carried out by a group of conspirators
inside the US government."

What do you think? More importantly, why? Share your sources and be
prepared to defend them. Ready ... set ... go!
-----------

My submission and the only one from last week (a fellow who has also
given the subject a lot of thought) can be seen at
http://www.rationalreview.com/content/17218
Instead of just reading what commentators and bloggers have written, I
hope that some readers here will put down their thoughts - with
reasons - thereby letting others know.

A slightly modified version of my submission on this timely symposium
subject has been made a permanent part of the SelfSIP "Focus on Freedom"
section: "More Than Reflection" - Simply remembering what took place on
September 11, 2001 is insufficient. Understanding the underlying reasons
for the tragedy and comprehending a fundamental lasting solution require
more, but are within the capabilities of anyone truly desirous of a
society of individuals interacting to mutual benefit.
