Hello Paul & Kitty,
My name is Lindsey Sherman. If you remember, we've met before,
through Jack ([David] Jackemeyer); I came with him to your home in Casa Grande
in the summer. You also might be indirectly familiar with who I am
from Jack's writings.
I understand that you require identification from anyone who posts to
this group and I am interested in posting in the future.
My Information:
Lindsey Nicole Sherman
Scottsdale, AZ
After submitting this post I will be placing my photo in the MoreLife
group photos section.
In the "Group Policy" file you wrote:
"The first above [indentifying information] is best provided to us by
scanning and faxing (775-254-3585) or email attaching a copy of a
credible picture ID (passport or driver's license will work)."
I do not have access to a fax or scanner that will allow me to send
you a copy of my driver's license electronically. I can, however,
photo copy it and send it via the US Postal Service if that is
acceptable to you.
A little more about myself... I am 24, soon to be 25 in January. I
was born and raised in Arizona and have extensively traveled
throughout Europe. Currently, I am attending Scottsdale Community
college full time pursuing an education in dance, and, beginning in
the spring, I will begin resuming the completion of my BS in
psychology at ASU. I am becoming an avid reader of Nathaniel
Branden's writings on self-esteem (I've just finished "How to Raise
Your Self-Esteem" and have started "Honoring the Self"). I
particularly enjoy his views on the ethics of "enlightened self
interest".
I have only recently begun to scratch the surface of self-sip, so I
imagine that most of my first postings will be nothing but questions;
since August I have been following some of the (self-sip) posts in my
free time, and I have been learning much, but my mind comes up with
nothing but question after question.
I look forward to learning and sharing with you,
Lindsey
[I want to first say how refreshing it is to find someone who is so open and
forthright about her person and her identity. Since we have already met you and
know some detail about you from Jack, there was actually no need for any
additional information, and there is certainly no need to go to the trouble of
sending anything more. I was also pleased to see that you put yourself on the
MoreLife Frappr including a picture (which I did not at first realize was you,
since I had not remembered how attractive you are!). I and Kitty are both
delighted to have you as one of our supporters and we look forward to your
questions and comments. And do not hesitate to ask those "question after
question"s; as I always told my students in my courses as a university
professor, "if you have a question, do not hesitate to ask because it is most
likely that others have a similar question and you are helping them as well as
yourself by asking and getting it explained". Although, of course, if you still
have much unread it may be better to wait awhile, since it is always best for a
person to work out the answers to their own questions or at least make a good
try before asking for help.
Still, much of the theory and practice of ethical social interaction is highly
complex and contorted. I have myself needed to work through some examples in
minute detail to fully understand the exact relationships of various ideas to
one another. This work is now proceeding very well and I will soon be posting
these examples along with the first draft of the new Natural Social Contract
which they illustrate and whose definitions they use. My aim is to have this
accomplished before the end of 2005. --Paul]
[I hope, Lindsey, that you will in the future, as your studies permit, also let
us (and others here at MoreLife Yahoo) know how dance enters into the
maximization of your lifetime happiness expectation. Olafur in Iceland has done
this in regard to the music he composes - which is the type Paul and I enjoy -
and I would very much like to hear about your dancing. One of my greatest joys
is dancing; it actually is more enjoyable since Paul because of the high value
he places in it also. So I look forward to hearing your thoughts and about your
feelings regarding dance.
Please feel free to make comments about the works of Branden that you've read -
using quotes/links so that others can get a good understanding. The field of
psychology is still generally weak in the practicing area when in comes to the
foundational ideas people hold as true. Branden is one of the brighter spots
because of his philosophical grounding - "rational self-interest" as you
mention, which we go on to explain is thinking widest view longest range with
the objective of maximizing one's lifetime happiness expectations. We look
forward to discussions with you in this area too. **Kitty]
