I would like to get another opinions on DIM. Below is a brief
description/claim for this chemical.
DIINDOLE METHANE, from cruciferous vegetables, is a tasteless,
stable, bioavailable form of indole 3-carbinol (I3C) with up to 10
times the potency of I3C according to some authorities. A pound and
one half of broccoli = 300mg I3C = 30-40mg DIM! It boosts amounts
of "good" 2-hydroxy estrone and estriol, while lowering cancer-
promoting 16-hydroxy estrone. (Ask your health professional about
tests to measure the ratio between these estrogens.) DIM helps
decrease protein bonding of testosterone, leaving more free
(bioavailable) testosterone, while flushing out excess natural
estrogens as well as xenoestrogens such as dioxin. It is being
tested to treat estrogen dominance, estrogen dependent breast &
prostate cancer, and lupus. DIM inhibits free radicals that oxidize
fat, helps protect the liver & colon, promotes fat loss, reduces DNA
damage, and causes cancer cells to self-destruct (apoptosis). A
recent study showed it inhibits the effects of DHT. Daily doses
range from 50 to 400mg. Absorption may be enhanced by Bioperine
and/or fats & oils. Although our reading of studies confirms the
opinion that DIM does most everything attributed to I3C only better,
Thanks,
Ashton

Paul, as Tom Matthews originator and Moderator of the Life Extension
Foundation's Forum from 1997 to Jan 2002, addressed questions on DIM several
times. This message from January 19 2001 -
http://forum.lef.org/default.aspx?f=35&m=16504 - may contain the information
that you seek. There are over 20 additional messages from Tom's time frame that
include discussion/mention of DIM. (Do a search using string "DIM" at
http://forum.lef.org/search.aspx ) Note that in July of 2004 LEF replaced all
the red font and characteristic [ --Tom] from all messages with only a ::
preceding and following Tom's comment text. You will therefore need to take care
to pick out his words from those of the poster's.
If you have questions or comments after reviewing Paul/Tom's earlier message
comments, then bring them forward here. Please use quotes when you do so (and
links to the particular message too).
I note that you did not provide a source for the "description/claim" for DIM.
However it was not hard to find after putting the first several words into
Google as a search string. The source, Beyond a Century, is not one Paul and I
have found to be strong on scientific understanding.
