Re: [moderndaymacrobiotics] interesting

Absolutely - after all it is about the journey!
I think that quote was saying that our truth lies within our hearts.

We have an expression in Hebrew - it's not your task to finish the job, but neither can you abandon it. It's similar to my favorite poem, Ithaca
http://users.hol.gr/~barbanis/cavafy/ithaca.html

Just because we can't reach The Truth,(or absolute Balance or Health or True Peace or any other Utopian goals)  doesn't mean it doesn't animate our lives and give it deeper meaning.

Maybe Haidt was saying that our minds our not designed to discover the truth even though we search for it. How many people can we actually say have discovered the truth - maybe it is as elusive as balance and health?

Melanie, my apologies for not explaining myself sooner but I´ve been to busy with work.

I wasn´t trying to fire arrows at you but it´s the second part of the quote that makes it complete rubbish. What Haidt says is the exact opposite of reality. Our minds ARE designed to discover the truth, and the evidence for that is all around us.

If you observe human behavior you´ll find that there are certain mechanisms present in every human being. Every human being wants to be loved. Every human being wants to be accepted by others. Even those people who deny they need those things and strongly believe they don´t need acceptance or love, still need it just as much as others. And without the presence of direct love or acceptance from others they will subconciously find a substitute in a different form, often leading to bizar behavior.

One other mechanism every human being is equiped with, and which sets us apart from animals, is that every human being wants to discover the truth, we all want answers. And this, believe it or not, is also what causes religion. The thing is, while there are a lot of people who don´t know how to deal with the other mechanisms, like the need for love, there are a lot more people who don´t know how to deal with their need for answers. In fact, there are only very few people on this planet who use this mechanism to their best ability. Millions of people instead find a substitute in religion, simply because they cannot live without answers.

One of many examples is Evel Knievel. He lived the live of a rockstar. Slept with countless girls who adored him. Had thousands of fans who applouded for him. But he couldn´t find happiness in all of that, he didn´t know what made his live miserable. Eventualy he gave up looking for answers, and found refuge in religion, which acts as a subsitute for answers, giving people the feeling they found answers so that they can finally obstain from looking for the real thing.

But despite finding a refuge, he coninued living for years in poor health and died as a sick man. The christians simply do not understand what their devil or satan realy is. At the same time there is this anti-religious movement which is growing today, favoring science over religion. These atheists etc do not understand that religion will not go away simply because  we are too naive to understand all of the universe and science doesn´t provide us with all the answers. If christianity does fall, than other religions will take over.

Every single human cannot live without answers, and the evidence is all around us. It is my understanding that this embedded need to find the truth is a requisite for the survival of the human race.

Peter

Hi Pete

Please explain further - are you saying that through the heart is not the way to open the mind?

That was the worst quote ever.

The person who wrote that is too yin. His vision is blocked by oversentimentality.

Interesting thought/quote

“Minds are very hard things to open, and the best way to open the mind is through the heart,” Professor Haidt says. “Our minds were not designed by evolution to discover the truth; they were designed to play social games.”
