Subject: [mayday] GMfCL 2003 #19: Fish Talks, Sez End is Near; Join 207 cities on
the Global Cannabis March May 3!
Word is made flesh as God reveals himself... as a fish
by Edward Helmore, The Observer [US]
March 16, 2003
An obscure Jewish sect in New York has been gripped in awe by what it believes to be a mystical visitation by a 20lb carp
that was heard shouting in Hebrew, in what many Jews worldwide are hailing as a modern miracle.
Many of the 7,000-member Skver sect of Hasidim in New Square, 30 miles north of Manhattan, believe God has revealed himself
in fish form.
According to two fish-cutters at the New Square Fish Market, the carp was about to be slaughtered and made into gefilte fish
for Sabbath dinner when it suddenly began shouting apocalyptic warnings in Hebrew.
Many believe the carp was channelling the troubled soul of a revered community elder who recently died; others say it was
God. The only witnesses to the mystical show were Zalmen Rosen, a 57-year-old Hasid with 11 children, and his co-worker,
Luis Nivelo. They say that on 28 January at 4pm they were about to club the carp on the head when it began yelling.
Nivelo, a Gentile who does not understand Hebrew, was so shocked at the sight of a fish talking in any language that he fell
over. He ran into the front of the store screaming: 'It's the Devil! The Devil is here!' Then the shop owner heard it
shouting warnings and commands too.
'It said "Tzaruch shemirah" and "Hasof bah",' he told the New York Times, 'which essentially means that everyone needs to
account for themselves because the end is near.'
The animated carp commanded Rosen to pray and study the Torah. Rosen tried to kill the fish but injured himself. It was
finally butchered by Nivelo and sold.
However, word spread far and wide and Nivelo complains he has been plagued by phone calls from as far away as London and
Israel. The story has since been amplified by repetition and some now believe the fish's outburst was a warning about the
dangers of the impending war in Iraq.
Some say they fear the born-again President Bush believes he is preparing the world for the Second Coming of Christ, and war
in Iraq is just the opening salvo in the battle of Armageddon.
Local resident Abraham Spitz said: 'Two men do not dream the same dream. It is very rare that God reminds people he exists
in this modern world. But when he does, you cannot ignore it.'
Others in New Square discount the apocalyptic reading altogether and suggest the notion of a talking fish is as fictional as
Tony Soprano's talking-fish dream in an episode of The Sopranos .
Stand-up comedians have already incorporated the carp into their comedy routines at weddings. One gefilte company has
considered changing it's slogan to: 'Our fish speaks for itself.'
Still, the shouting carp corresponds with the belief of some Hasidic sects that righteous people can be reincarnated as
fish. They say that Nivelo may have been selected because he is not Jewish, but a weary Nivelo told the New York Times : 'I
wish I never said anything about it. I'm getting so many calls every day, I've stopped answering. Israel, London, Miami,
Brooklyn. They all want to hear about the talking fish.'
A devout Christian, he still thinks the carp was the Devil. 'I don't believe any of this Jewish stuff. But I heard that fish
talk.'
He's grown tired of the whole thing. 'It's just a big headache for me,' he added. 'I pull my phone out of the wall at night.
I don't sleep and I've lost weight.'http://www.observer.co.uk/international/story/0,6903,915125,00.html*****!!! May 4, 2002 Cannabis Liberation Day: Updates, Reports!!!*****

National Commission of Ganja reports widespread support for freeing the
island's sacred weed. Ganja was brought to the West Indies in the
mid-19th century by East Indian laborers who settled in Guyana,
Trinidad and Jamaica.
In Jamaica, from the 1800's until the early years of the 20th century,
ganja was an unregulated herb widely used as medicine, intoxicant, and
religious sacrament.
Even though it caused few medical or social problems, Judeo-Christian
church groups and
Jamaica's white ruling elite convinced legislators to criminalize it in
1913. The country later became a signatory to international
anti-marijuana treaties.
Prohibition has been a disaster for Jamaica. Tens of thousands of
Jamaicans have been harassed, jailed and even killed due to enforcement
of ganja laws. Yet, the island's climate, culture, and topography areideal for ganja cultivation, and Jamaica has become famous for potent
outdoor marijuana, reggae music, and herb-infused Rastafarian religion.
In 1977, after decades of counterproductive attempts to stop Jamaicans
from growing and using marijuana, the government set up an aptly-named
"Joint Select Committee" to study ganja and make new policy
recommendations.
The Committee rejected full legalization only because it did not
believe Jamaica could legalize herb and still be in compliance with
anti-narcotics treaties, but it unanimously concluded that "there was a
substantial case for decriminalizing personal use of ganja."
The Committee recommended "no punishment" for personal use of as much
as two ounces of ganja by users on private premises. It recommended
total legalization of medical marijuana.
American aggression
The United States government, and church groups, forced the Jamaican
government to ignore the 1977 committee's recommendations. US military
personnel and equipment, along with US spy agencies like the CIA and
DEA, then invaded Jamaica, using Jamaican police and soldiers as proxy
warriors waging a scorched earth campaign against the island's
burgeoning domestic and export marijuana trade.
The US put a naval and aerial blockade around Jamaica during the 1970's
and 80's, unsuccessfully seeking to interdict megatons of baled and
bricked Jamaican weed, much of which was being offloaded along
Florida's coastline.
During this period, America provided millions of dollars in funding for
the Jamaican government's counter-narcotics efforts. According to the
US State Department, America "has provided more counter-narcotics
assistance to Jamaica than to any other Caribbean country."
US officials have long complained that Jamaicans were making a
half-hearted effort to eradicate ganja. They allege that the country is
the Caribbean's biggest producer and exporter of ganja and a major
transit country for cocaine destined for the US and other internationalmarkets.
In 1999, the US halved its financial support of Jamaica's
anti-marijuana efforts, in part because the Jamaican government used
"cutter teams" rather than herbicides and other poisons that the US
uses domestically and in places like Colombia.
Even while the US was scaling back financial and cultivation-killer
support, the DEA, ATF, CIA and other US law enforcers were increasing
clandestine operational activities in and around Jamaica. Like citizens
in Colombia, Canada, Mexico, Afghanistan, and other countries,
Jamaicans believe that the drug war is a way for the US to gain control
over the internal affairs of what should be a sovereign nation. Some
Jamaicans credibly suspect that US spy agencies and organized crime are
smuggling guns and cocaine into Jamaica, in an attempt to destabilize
the country and derail its
efforts to legalize ganja.
Although direct US involvement in eradication campaigns has dwindled,US spy planes continue to conduct aerial surveys to precisely identify
and target areas of cannabis cultivation; they also target boats
traveling to and from Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean.
Study buddy
In 1999, Jamaican Senator Trevor Munroe told Cannabis Culture he was
pushing legislation to set up a "National Commission of Ganja" Jamaican
- - ganja journey.
In November 2000, Munroe's national Commission officially commenced a
nine-month cannabis study.
The Commission was chaired by the dean of the Faculty of Social
Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Professor Barry
Chevannes.
Chevannes was a lauded member of the research staff for an earlier
Jamaican ganja study, conducted by Vera Rubin and Lambros Comitas on
behalf of the US National Institute of Mental Health in the early
1970's. That pioneering and comprehensive study concluded that
Jamaicans used marijuana to enhance work performance and health, with
few negative effects.
Chevannes shared Commission duties with commissioners from a broad
array of ideological and professional backgrounds, including educators,
artists, clergymen, and a member of the National Council on Drug Abuse.
The Commission conducted hearings in every parish in Jamaica. It took
comment from hundreds of people =AD old and young, male and female,
artisans, farmers, professionals, managers, unskilled and unemployed
persons, police, clergy, and others who gave oral or written testimony
at home and abroad.
And, in what must have been one of the inquiry's most sought-after
duties, a Commission member was selected to make a trip to Holland to
see first hand how The Netherlands' de facto decriminalization policy
worked.
"We looked around the world for the latest information about ganja and
policy," Dr Chevannes told me in a recent conversation. "We believethat our report is a significant step in developing rational policies
about this plant."
Popular plant
Researchers told the Commission that approximately one third of the
island's residents smoke ganja on a regular basis, and that ganja use,
once confined mostly to people on the lower rungs of the socioeconomic
ladder, is now practiced by people from all strata of society.
A parade of experts, including scientists, police, drug abuse
counselors and community leaders, testified that they supported
decriminalization of ganja.
The commissioners found medical evidence and expert testimony supported
the idea that cannabis is useful in decreasing severity of the
following medical problems: nausea, vomiting, insomnia, chronic pain,
appetite loss, glaucoma, muscle spasticity from spinal cord injuries
and multiple sclerosis, migraine headaches, depression, and seizures.
Cannabis Culture interviewed a pioneering Jamaican medical researcher,
Dr Manley West, who developed a cannabis extract =AD Cannasol =AD that is
now a registered medicine used to treat glaucoma --
http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/59.html -- Ganja medicine in
Jamaica. West and colleagues developed another product, Asmasol, based
on the Cannasol research, for the treatment of cough, cold and
bronchial asthma. West and the late Professor Sir John Goldingdeveloped a protocol for using a cannabis preparation in the control of
pain in terminally ill patients. West has also developed a cannabis
medicine that treats motion sickness.
According to West, his cannabis products are safe and effective, but
the US government and its Food and Drug Administration (FDA) blocked
approval for using the products in America.
"They're depriving their citizens of useful medicines for financial and
political reasons," West complained. "Our products are medically safe
and very effective, and we have proven that by scientific methods."
Some supporters of ganja law reform told the Commission that the herb
had provided them with "deep personal benefits."
"These range from miraculous cures to relief from simple colds, but
they include well-known ailments and symptoms such as asthma and
glaucoma," the Commission reported. "There were many personal
testimonies of benefits from either smoking ganja or ingesting it astea or medicine steeped in rum. We heard the tale of a woman whose
beast of burden was cured from the ashes stuffed in a wound; of a man
stricken as a schoolboy with dengue fever, who drank
the tea and was cured overnight; of a former Jamaica Constabulary Force
member whose chronic hypertension, after nineteen years of prescribed
medication, completely disappeared with the now regular smoking of
ganja.
Jamaican drug counselors told the Commission that ganja is not harmful
enough to justify criminal penalties, and that dishonest anti-ganja
propaganda made it harder for them to credibly teach young people about
drug abuse.
The president of the Medical Association of Jamaica, along with the
country's premier medical officer, told the Chevannes Commission that
laws criminalizing people for small amounts of ganja are "probably
having a worse effect than if it had been legalized."
US response
Last year, Chevannes made public the Commission's findings and
recommendations.
"We advised lawmakers to amend the laws to make private, personal
possession of small amounts of ganja legal," Chevannes said.
After Jamaica's Prime Minister publicly stated support for theCommission's recommendations, the US embassy in Jamaica weighed in.
"The US opposes decriminalization of marijuana use," said embassy
spokesman Michael Koplovsky. "The US Government will evaluate if such
proposals violate Jamaica's commitments to 1988 United Nations
anti-drug treaty."
Other US officials said that if Jamaica loosened its ganja laws, the US
would respond with economic sanctions that would cause serious harm to
the already-impoverished country.
And according to US spokeswoman Orna Bloom, "The United States
government opposes the decriminalization of marijuana use because it
creates the perception, especially to our youth, that marijuana is notharmful, which could lead then to an increase in its use."
In Washington, DC, Jamaican embassy spokesperson Neil Hamilton told
Cannabis Culture in March, 2002 that Jamaican legislators were "still
working on the details of the proposed ganja law changes."
"It's being discussed in our country, and between our countries,"
Hamilton said. "Washington has not formally threatened us about this.
We're committed to stopping drug exports, but we also want to
acknowledge the effects of the laws in our country, and the religious
and medical aspects of ganja use. And, we must acknowledge the
professionalism and scope of what Dr. Chevannes and his team did. Wehope we will see positive developments very soon."Jamaican news and events: http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com--------------------------------------------

LAWMAKERS REJECT MARIJUANA BILL
AUGUSTA, Maine - The Maine Senate, voting along party lines, rejected a
bill Wednesday that would specify what a "usable amount" of marijuana is in
determining levels of punishment for possession.
Next comes consideration in the House of Representatives, where most of the
few members who have looked closely at the measure thus far have signaled
their support.
The proposal rejected by the Senate had been backed by a 10-3 majority of
the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee.
As put forth by the committee, the proposal would insert language in
existing law to specify a threshold under which possession of marijuana
becomes a mere civil infraction rather than a criminal violation.
The proposed clarification would read: "possession of a usable amount ofmarijuana of a weight equal to or less than 11/4 ounces is a civilviolation," punishable for a first offense by a forfeiture of between $200and $400.URL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03.n397.a01.html------------------------------

POL PUTS POT ON FRONT BURNER
When the City Council finally passes its anti-war resolution tomorrow,
it'll immediately get enmeshed in another controversial issue - the
legalization of medical marijuana.
Councilman Phil Reed (D-Manhattan), who is pushing for legal marijuana,
says he wants AIDS patients, cancer sufferers and others with debilitating
diseases to be able to alleviate their pain.
"It's a very modest bill in reality. There are thousands of people who
could benefit," Reed said.
The state Legislature is weighing the matter in a bill introduced by
Manhattan Assemblyman Richard Gottfried. The council's resolution is
strictly advisory.
Reed's resolution is to get a hearing in the Health Committee next month.
It is supported by New York State Nurses Association, New York AIDSCoalition.--------

FLORIDA MAN GETS PROBATION IN MEDICAL MARIJUANA CASE
DUBLIN - A Florida man who claimed a medical need for marijuana will serve
five years probation after a judge declared him guilty of marijuana
possession Friday.
Joseph Walbroehl admitted to hauling 1.5 pounds of marijuana through
Laurens County. He was visibly upset after the sentence was pronounced; he
said marijuana is the only pain-relieving drug that his body can tolerate.
"I'll be dead in a few months," Walbroehl said in an interview after the
hearing. "My insides will start bleeding."
In a previous hearing, he said he would rather be sentenced to death than
be told he could no longer use marijuana. He suffers pain as a result of acar falling on him and from three rear-end collisions.URL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03.n402.a01.html------------------------------

BLOC POT HOPING TO PLAY SPOILER'S ROLE IN TIGHT RACES
Wants Marijuana Legalized. Fifty-Three Candidates Already Signed Up, Party
Hopes to Find 72 More Before Election
Bloc Pot provides the real alternative in the provincial election because
it's the only party that doesn't seek power but wants to actually change
something, its leader said yesterday.
The 5-year-old party, which is beating the bushes for 72 candidates to add
to its slate of 53, would end prohibitions against marijuana, promote
medical marijuana and seek legalization or non-intervention policies for
"the responsible use" of marijuana.
"We are more than a protest vote," Hugo St-Onge said during the launch of
the Bloc campaign in Old Montreal. "It's very pragmatic to vote for us."URL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03.n403.a03.html

MEDICAL MARIJUANA APPEAL WEAK: JUDGE
TORONTO -- An Ontario Court of Appeal judge suggested yesterday the federal
government has a "weak" case in its appeal of a Superior Court ruling that
the medical marijuana regulations enacted by Health Canada are
unconstitutional.
During a court hearing to determine a number of procedural issues connected
to the appeal, Justice Michael Moldaver also scolded federal authoritiesfor apparent stalling tactics.
Superior Court Justice Sidney Lederman gave Health Canada until July to
come up with a plan to provide legal marijuana to people with medical

HAYWARD OFFICIALS IN LEGAL BIND OVER MEDICAL POT
Three Downtown Marijuana Dispensaries Violate Zoning Laws
HAYWARD -- The federal government says marijuana is illegal.
But, the state and a majority of California voters who approved Proposition
215 in 1996 consider the plant legal for medicinal use.
So where does that leave cities such as Hayward, with its three existing
downtown medical marijuana dispensaries?
City officials, who only recently learned of the dispensaries in town, say
the businesses are violating the city's zoning law.
But medical cannabis proponents say it's up to cities to develop guidelines
and standards to help implement the state medical marijuana law. Cities
such as San Francisco and Fairfax in Marin County have already done so.URL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03.n410.a11.html----------

MEDICAL POT USERS LOSE IN U.S. COURT
California patients using local weed aren't exempt from federal drug

In another legal setback for medical marijuana in California, a
federal judge says two patients who used locally grown pot with their
doctors' approval could face prosecution under federal drug laws.
In a ruling made public Monday, U.S. District Judge Martin Jenkins
expressed sympathy for the two women, for whom "traditional medicine
has utterly failed." But he said the federal ban on marijuana applied

MIAMI POLICE CORRUPTION TRIAL HEADED TO JURYFederal prosecutors charge bad cops planted guns on the unarmedvictims of four police shootings, and their police buddies covered itup. The officers' defenders say it never happened and it wasn't proven
during a 10-week trial.
Jurors will be asked this week to decide the corruption case involving
11 Miami officers who face possible 10-year prison sentences and loss
of their careers. None of the defendants testified, but two officers
on their special teams broke the police "code of silence."
Back at the station, the Miami Police Department has a new chief and
new policies after years of rubber-stamping police shootings as
justified in spite of brewing community outrage.
Police shootings, beatings or acquittals in Miami triggered riots or
smaller street clashes six times from 1980 to 1995. The indictment
covers shootings from 1995 to 1997 and is the city's worst police
scandal since the 1980s when the so-called "Miami River Cops" stolecocaine from drug traffickers and sold the drug themselves.URL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03.n409.a07.html

COCALEROS REWRITE US DRUGS WAR 'SUCCESS STORY'
PEASANT farmers in Bolivia have brought the country to its knees by
mounting a ferocious campaign to be allowed to grow coca leaves.
Two years ago, the US State Department praised Bolivia as "the model for
coca eradication" in South America, but the Bolivian government now appears
to be losing the war on drugs after tens of thousands of defiant,
sandal-wearing farmers, known as cocaleros, have taken up arms.
There is talk of allowing the cocaleros to grow coca - traditionally used
for chewing, in tea and as a medicine - for a limited period, a move which
would anger the US. In the Chapare jungle, they have doggedly replanted
fields destroyed by anti-narcotics troops, resulting in an increase of cocaproduction from 600 to 5,400 hectares in two years, according to US
government statistics.
The government has been brought to the brink of collapse by a blockade of
the nation's most important highway with logs, rocks and curved,
tire-shredding nails.URL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03.n409.a10.html

hi, could anyone tell me if there is any reason I
would want to mix ibogaine hcl and indra at the same
time?
thanks. I know taking indra after hcl when your
getting off methadone can be helpful, or doing hcl a
few times in a row. but i havent heard of hcl and
indra at the same time before but a person here who
did it to get off methadone says it worked really
well.
thanks again

At Iboga Therapy House we have recently used the following regimen to cleara methadone dependent person who was taking 300 mg A DAY. A staggering load
of methadone every day, more than I have ever seen.
At 52 hours after the patient's last 300 mg. methadone dose, we gave him
5,200 mg Indra extract
Over the next 72 hours, the patient has no physical withdrawl as per usual
(in other words, no shitting, vomitting, sweats, running nose, pounding
headache) but felt miserable.
72 hours after the first dose of Indra extract, we gave him 100 mg IbogaineHydrochloride
96 hours after the first dose of Indra extract, we gave him 100 mg. Ibogainehydrochloride
120 hours after the first dose of Indra extract, we gave him 3,800 mg. Indra
extract
168 hours after the first dose of Indra extract, we gave him 100 mg. Ibo HCI
192 hours after the first dose of Indra extract, we gave him 100 mg. Ibo HCI
By his 11th day here (12 days from his last 300 mg. methadone dose), he wasbright, sharp, lucid, no slurring, no signs of any methadone, no withdrawl
or craving or discomfort of any kind. Patient said "I like the way I'm
thinking now"
Patient ate little in the 12 days. Lost 25 pounds. Looks robust, healthy
skin. "On methadone, I gained 110 pounds" he commented". The ibogaine isreturning him to his regular body weight I feel.
Patient left for home in Maine on day 12. Health continues to show even
further progress & improvement.
I have accompanied two people through cold turkey methadone withdrawl and
heroin withdrawl years ago, and the difference is shockingly different. With
regular withdrawl, the person lay in the bathtub, sweating, pounding
headache, shitting, puking, never getting up out of the bathtub for over 3
days, screaming, crying, etc. Very unhappy and scary. (I literally had to
hose him down with warm water to clean him. It was so sad).
With ibogaine, the patient felt a tolerable malaise from hour 24 to hour 192
after first dose of Indra extract, but never any overt physical withdrawlsymptoms.
This was our most extreme detox ever, as most opiate dependent persons
require much less and feel very good at hour 48 after Indra extract
administration (and they are 'out' prior to that, not in physicaldiscomfort), but they are on 20 mg. - 120 mg. daily of heroin or methadone.Methadone is more challenging to clear but it is possible with a morerigorous regimen.Marc EmeryIboga Therapy House--------------From: Brett Calabrese <bcalabrese@...>

I can tell you why I do it.
Basically it is softer, smoother and richer than HCL
alone (easier on ya) and it is shorter with a better
post ibo session mood than Indra alone. Indra tends to
have more post-tx depression than HCL in my
observation, personally I was never depressed from HCL
or mixed with Indra, only Indra alone. It brings the 2forms of ibo together, I find HCL breaks through
better but don't quite need a skedge hammer, a bit of
each is not too hard and not too soft...
FWIW I convert to mg/kg, use 25-50% Indra by potency.
1gm of Indra would equal 200mg of HCL so if I wanted
to take 600mg (in HCL dosages) I would take 1gm of
Indra and 400mg of HCL. Vivian likes more Indra than I
do, she likes closer to 50%, I like closer to 25%
Indra.

I wanted to wait until he was in a minor degree of discomfort, but before
the nasty physical withdrawl started. Wanted to run the methadone level down
as much as possible before the ibogaine detox, as I knew the long lasting
opiate (methadone) is much more determined to stay in the system than
morphine or heroin, and treatment will involve more ibogaine, more time, and
some degree of discomfort. Also 300 mg. of methadone a day is a fantastic
large amount to be taking daily, and we needed every advantage to treat it.
By 52 hours, he felt crappy but was not nauseous or puking.

Thanks, I was wondering how uncomfortable they were
before treatment was started. I didn't see a "test"
dose so was also wondering if you had given that
earlier then waited some more. Please subscribe to new MMM email list. Public archive still open.
The public MMM email list at Yahoo Groups now requires people to subscribein order to post messages to the list and the public archive. For a fewweeks I set it up so that non-members could also send in email messages tothe list. That was to help people send in MMM rally reports. It worked. The archive also got some spam too. That was deleted. But people shouldkeep sending in MMM-related stuff. Just subscribe first.
The MMM message archive itself is still public and accessible to anybody:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cannabisaction
