BHANG ON TOURISTS' PLATE IN JAISALMER

Jaisalmer, Feb. 26 (Reuters): Rajesh Vyas loves his job with a
passion, always uses his own product -- and sincerely promises you
will not turn into an orange or see pink elephants.

From a small wooden hut near the gate to the 850-year-old Golden Fort
in Jaisalmer, one of the country's most popular tourist draws, Vyas
and his brothers sell marijuana. Legally.

Vyas' customers munch, slurp and smoke their way through about 30 kg
of bhang every month in yoghurt drinks and fruit juices, cookies and
chocolate, cigarettes and sweets, tea and sandwiches.

"Do not anticipate or analyse, just enjoy," advises the menu."You will
not see pink elephants, jump off tall buildings or turn into an
orange. You will remember most of your experiences in the morning."

MEDICAL POT LAW OPPOSED BY DOUGLAS

MONTPELIER -- Republican Gov. James Douglas said Wednesday he would oppose
legalizing marijuana use for people with diseases like AIDS and cancer
because it would still be illegal under federal law and there are other
drugs available to help those suffering from such conditions.

"I have tremendous empathy for those who suffer from chronic pain and who
feel they would benefit from medical marijuana," Douglas said. "But I think
it would be awkward to legalize a substance that could still the subject of
prosecution by federal authorities."

Douglas praised the work of advocates and those who participated on a study
commission this summer that was set up after a bill passed the
GOP-controlled House last year but couldn't be reconciled with a Senate
version.

He said they should focus their efforts on changing federal law.

RESIDENTS SPEAK OUT FOR MEDICINAL MARIJUANA

Erin Hildebrandt's Crohn's disease and chronic migraines were so
debilitating that the 32-year-old mother of five once worried that she would
never be able to properly care for her children. She tried various powerful
narcotics to deal with the pain, but found no relief. Now she worries that
she could be arrested and her children taken away because she found a drug
that works: pot.

With Maryland lawmakers considering legalizing the use of medical marijuana,
the Washington County woman was among witnesses to testify yesterday before
the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. Cancer sufferers told lawmakers
how the drug had helped them withstand chemotherapy. Del. Dan K. Morhaim
(D-Baltimore County), a doctor, said that for some patients, marijuana is
far superior to alternatives in treating nausea.

But opponents worried that legalizing the drug for medicinal purposes would
send the wrong message to children and could potentially put the state in
conflict with the federal government. The Hospice Network of Maryland, while
supportive of the effort, said the bill would decriminalize the drug for
medical use -- but not for the doctors who prescribe it.

Nine states administer active medical marijuana programs. But the federal
government recently prosecuted a California man who grew marijuana to be
sold for medicinal uses under the auspices of that state's laws.

Maryland's bill has an ally in Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R). Spokesman
Henry Fawell said the governor "supports the concept" but has not decided
whether to support the bill.

HOUSE REJECTS MEDICAL-POT BILL

Although the state House of Representatives passed a medical-marijuana bill
two years ago, the House overwhelmingly rejected a similar bill Thursday.

A majority of Democrats and a huge majority of Republicans defeated House
Bill 242 with a 46-20 vote Thursday.

The House vote effectively killed the bill, since no similar measure is
before the Senate.

The mother of a 26-year-old cancer patient who died last year was angered by
the vote.

"These people who voted against it, I just pray that they never find out
what they've done," said Vicki Plevin of Albuquerque, who is working as an
unpaid lobbyist on an unrelated issue.

STEPNOSKI OBVIOUSLY HAS INHALED

Former Dallas Cowboys center Mark Stepnoski was featured prominently last
week by an area daily newspaper in a story where he outlined his years of
marijuana use. Although he holds himself up as "proof" that the illegal
drug does not cause physical harm nor does it damage one's career, it seems
obvious it has impaired his judgment.

The offensive lineman claimed he has not had one teammate be critical of
what he is doing. That may be another indication of unacknowledged effects
of regular marijuana use -- impairment to short-term memory.

Stepnoski, who retired after the 2001 season, apparently has dedicated his
retirement to spreading the message that marijuana is not harmful. He
serves as president of the Texas chapter of the National Organization for
Reform of Marijuana Laws -- whose goal is legalization of the weed -- and
has joined the group's national advisory board.

Habitual pot use may not have prevented Stepnoski from becoming a
professional football player, but it is hard to say that in the long run,
there have been no negative effects from the drug.

MEDICINAL MARIJUANA REJECTED

HELENA -- The state House voted down a bill Wednesday that sponsor Rep. Ron
Erickson, D-Missoula, said would have sent a message to the state that "pain
counts."

House Bill 506, to allow patients to use medicinal marijuana for pain or
illness relief, died in the House, 60-40. Opponents said the bill would send
the wrong message -- that it's OK to use marijuana.

The bill's initial hearing in the House Judiciary Committee last week was
emotional, as chronic pain sufferers and multiple sclerosis patients told
the committee how cannabis had saved their livelihoods and in some cases,
their lives.

LAS VEGAN LOOKS TO CREATE NEVADA'S FIRST CANNABIS CLUB

Pierre Werner has a (hazy) vision. He's a medical marijuana provider, and
wants to create Nevada's first compassion club for the product's users - and
not even the law will get in his way of creating it.

"I've been doing this all my life - providing medical marijuana even before
it was considered medical," he says.

Werner is the president of Primary Caregivers and Consultants, a company he
created to provide medical marijuana to patients and offer
physician-approved recommendations. He also consults attorneys and
physicians on Nevada's Medical Marijuana Program. Currently he services 15
patients, eight of whom are registered with the Department of Agriculture's
Medical Marijuana Program.

"After seeing so many dying patients in pain, I felt obligated to do
something," he says, adding that he is not considered a caregiver since the
state only allows one patient per caregiver.

POT ACTIVIST'S PRISON TERM IS THROWN OUT

In A Stunning Reversal, A U.S. Magistrate Opts For Probation Instead.

In a remarkable reversal Monday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter A. Nowinski
threw out the three-month prison term he imposed last week on medical
marijuana activist Jeff Jones and placed him on probation for three years.
The participants in the proceedings, as well as about 20 others seated in
the courtroom, sat stunned as Nowinski announced his change of mind.

In a scene as dramatic as any in the history of Sacramento's federal court,
the judge took the bench and said, "I've given the matter a great deal of
thought over the weekend.

"My purpose is not to make life miserable for you," he told Jones.

Nowinski related a Sunday conversation with his 17-year-old son about what
he planned to do.

POLICE QUESTION POT CLUB'S POLICING EFFORTS

A seven-month reprieve from police raids ended last week for the Cannabis
Buyers Club in Victoria.

Acting on information obtained through an earlier arrest, Victoria police
executed a search warrant Feb. 19 and seized a "large quantity" of
marijuana from the 826 Johnson St. shop used as headquarters for the local
medical marijuana compassion club and the Hempology 101 Society.

It is the fifth time since January 2002 that police have seized products
and/or made arrests at the location.

Victoria police Sgt. Darren Laur says he is "empathetic to the cause of
medicinal marijuana". He adds, however, the department has to draw the line
when it comes to the unlawful distribution of illicit drugs.

"As long as the criminal element is still purchasing marijuana at certain
organizations at a discounted rate and re-selling it downtown, we will
continue to target those organizations," he says.

PROBATION CLARIFICATION SOUGHT

HILO (AP) - A Big Island marijuana advocate released from prison this week
is seeking court clarification of the five years of probation he faces.

One condition says Jonathan Adler cannot possess marijuana "while in
custody," but Adler said he is no longer in custody and his state medical
marijuana registration allows him to possess marijuana.

Another condition prohibits him from being present where marijuana is used,
but Adler said that would prevent him from practicing his religion with
other believers of the Religion of Jesus Church, which uses marijuana as a
sacrament. Adler is a pastor in the church.

Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura postponed a hearing on Adler's request until
April or later, when expert witnesses can be called.

Adler, 50, was released Tuesday from the Hawaii Community Correctional
Center after serving a six - month sentence for his guilty plea to five
marijuana felonies.

Adler, who says he requires marijuana for chronic pain and religious
purposes, was convicted last June of possessing more than 50 marijuana
plants and of possessing drug paraphernalia. The charges were filed in
September 1999.
At the time of his sentencing, Adler was a candidate for governor as a
Natural Law Party candidate. After he was sentenced, he became ineligible to
hold office.

DELL DITCHES DUDE; CURTIS CONTRACT CANCELLED

Dell, the computer manufacturer, has fired pitchman Benjamin Curtis, a
Tisch School of the Arts senior, following his Feb. 9 arrest for purchasing
marijuana, Curtis told The New York Sun.

Curtis, known to millions as "Steven the Dell Dude" from a series of the
company's commercials, said he was "done with the Dell stuff" and hoped to
land a role in a film, this time playing an adult. His Dell contract was
valued at around $500,000 before being canceled, The Sun reported.

Curtis' portrayal of "Steven" popularized the slogan "Dude, yer gettin' a
Dell," but the company's newest advertising campaign featured him in a
reduced role.

"I was getting frustrated," Curtis said. "My creative talent was getting
wasted. All the best takes we did were never shown. I felt hindered as a
performer."

Curtis was arrested earlier this month by a New York Police Department
anti-narcotics detail for reportedly trying to buy about two ounces of
marijuana from a Queens resident on Manhattan's Lower East Side. He was
arraigned in New York Criminal Court on Feb. 10, where a judge told him the
charges would be dismissed if he was not arrested in the next year.

KENOSHA MAN GETS PROBATION FOR ROLE IN GROWING MARIJUANA

His Parents Committed Suicide After Similar Charges

Waukesha - A man whose parents committed suicide after being threatened with
prison and home forfeiture for growing marijuana was spared any
incarceration Friday for his role in the operation.

Gone were the pro-marijuana T-shirts that Joshua Schilling's siblings wore
to their parents' funeral in September. Gone, too, were the petitions for
legalization of the drug for medicinal purposes.

Family members instead sat quietly in court and breathed sighs of relief
when a judge told Schilling, 20, that he would serve three years of
probation for his two felony convictions.

Wiping away tears, Schilling said, "I'm sorry, and I'd like to thank my
family and my friends for being there for my support."

FAMILIES LIVE IN TERROR AS 'SUSPECTS' DIE

On Wednesday afternoon, a couple was brutally shot and killed on their way
home after paying a 5,000-baht fine for marijuana use at a police station.

Five minutes later their neighbour was gunned down in his home while the
rest of the family looked on helplessly.

Ten-year-old Anont Montha came running in, only to see his parents, Thanom
Montha and Kwanla Puangchompu, lying in a pool of blood.

The five surviving children of this family were staying with relatives.
They intend to move out and sell the house after today's funeral rite.

Suwit Baison, 23, who is left to take care of his five younger brothers and
sisters, blames the deaths of his parents on the government's do-or-die
drug suppression campaign. ``The most serious flaw of this policy is that
parties must meet the 25% target.

AMNESTY TELLS GOVT TO ACT ON DEATH THREATS

Amnesty International has called on Thailand to protect the country's top
human rights official who claimed to have received death threats since
reporting on the country's violent anti-drug campaign to the United Nations.

Dr Pradit Charoenthaitawee, a national human rights commissioner, said he
had received several telephoned death threats but vowed to continue doing
his job.

The London-based human rights group said in a statement yesterday that the
Thai government "should do everything in its power to provide protection to
Dr Pradit and his family'' and "should immediately initiate an
investigation into these repeated death threats.''

Dr Pradit said he had been unfairly targeted for his effort to document the
country's anti-drug campaign.

"I am doing my job and will continue to do it, so those who have been
harassing me by telephone and threatening my life should stop,'' he said.

The Amnesty statement noted that members of Prime Minister Thaksin
Shinawatra's Thai Rak Thai party have said they were considering a petition
for Dr Pradit to be ousted as human rights commissioner.

Those politicians said Dr Pradit had overstepped his bounds by complaining
to the UN about the high death toll from the anti-drug campaign. His action
has caused embarrassment for Thailand, they claimed. Amnesty welcomed Mr
Thaksin's appointment last week of two government committees to look into
drug-related killings, encouraging authorities to ensure prompt and
independent inquiries.

MONTESINOS TRIAL REMINDS PERUVIANS OF THE BAD TIMES

Rows of riot police guard a specially adapted courtroom at Lurigancho prison
in the dismal outskirts of Peru's capital, Lima. The roof has been
strengthened to resist mortar attack. The public galleries are bulletproof.
And the man on trial - Vladimiro Montesinos, the shadowy national security
adviser for disgraced former president Alberto Fujimori - has arrived
wearing a bulletproof vest.

So extensive was the web of corruption and secrecy woven by Mr Montesinos
that prosecutors fear cronies may seek to free - or even kill - him. Nearly
two years after Mr Montesinos' arrest and Mr Fujimori's departure into
exile, their decade-long rule continues to haunt Peruvian society.

Mr Fujimori, an unknown university rector until his election in 1990,
famously eliminated hyperinflation. Mr Montesinos helped him plan a coup two
years later, suspend civil rights and wipe out the Maoist Shining Path
guerrilla movement.

Hi Dana

Came across an interesting article trawling the maps archieves.if youve seen it before, apologies.

The article by Benny Shannon "Being outside the dominion of time" -
neatly illustrates the atemporal nature of the beta-carboline experience :

http://www.maps.org/news-letters/v11n2/11248sha.html

Im trawling through the net at the moment, trying to find instances where
those undergoing experiences with ibogaine gave descriptions of "time
travel" - i certainly experienced atemporality - visiting friends that since confirmed my description of their location.
there is also the report in the book of the guy who saw his friend fall out of the window three weeks into the future (did u know him,im sure he was from NY -geerte f's boyfriend? ) and a few reports of people travelling "backwards" in time

Gonna flesh it out with ayauascha/harmala experiences and use the stuff by the mckennas in the invisible landscape on the solid state matrix induced by harmine bonding to dna through electron spin ressonance.
And of course PKD 3/74 experience of laminated super-imposistion!
Plus burroughs said in the yage letters ; "yage is time travel"

Oh yeah - Re-read "A Scanner Darkly" recently - theres a scene i forgot about where someone recounts a "rectangle" appearing - a door into hyperspace - it appears for about a week but the guy doesnt go through it -!

paul.

ps>you recording the seminar on the lost sacrament at the conference?
did one of the guys from the church know bishop pike? - have u heard about a spiritualist medium over here in the early seventies that "contacted" bishop pike after he was "lost" - theirs a chapter in her autobiography about what they talked about! - its out of print so ive ordered it from the british library over here - i'll let you know
if its interesting.

Please subscribe to new MMM email list. Public archive still open.

The public MMM email list at Yahoo Groups now requires people to subscribe
in order to post messages to the list and the public archive. For a few
weeks I set it up so that non-members could also send in email messages to
the list. That was to help people send in MMM rally reports. It worked.
The archive also got some spam too. That was deleted. But people should
keep sending in MMM-related stuff. Just subscribe first.

The MMM message archive itself is still public and accessible to anybody:

*MMM (Million Marijuana March) and Global Cannabis Action. Marches and

cities so far ... and counting!!! Other multi-city cannabis and drug
reform events are covered, too. Email list public archive for event info,
ideas, MMM 2002 rally reports, photo attachments, links, HTML web pages,
etc.. Also, Dana Beal's most recent messages include the latest,
continually-revised, compilation of MMM 2003 cities, contacts, and rally
info. After subscribing to this Yahoo Group email list, please use
cannabisaction@yahoogroups.com  for sending in messages. On the homepage
there are links to archived messages, and to web pages with even more MMM
links, info, and rally report compilations online. Homepage:
