Committee fails to hear medical marijuana bill; activists push forward

Last updated May 1, 2006

In a sad repeat of 2005, Senate Judiciary Committee co-chairs David Miller (R-Fairfield) and Keith Kreiman (D-Bloomfield) failed to take any action on Sen. Joe Bolkcom’s (D-Iowa City) medical marijuana bill, S.F. 64. Unfortunately, seriously ill patients and medical professionals did not have a chance to explain the urgent need for medical marijuana legislation. Bolkcom’s bill would protect patients who use medical marijuana from arrest and prison while maintaining penalties for distribution.

The frustration of moving this bill forward has not stopped the efforts of committed Iowa activists. On May 6, the University of Iowa chapter of Students for Sensible Drug Policy will be sponsoring the Global Marijuana March in Iowa City. The march will have a number of speakers, including from Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), as well as performances from local bands, headlined by Public Property. If you are interested in helping with the march or getting more information, please contact Annie Tye at annietye@....

The Drug Policy Forum of Iowa is spearheading a LEAP speaking tough for May 4-13. The tour will focus on central and east Iowa with speakers discussing the merits of implementing marijuana policy reform that would remove marijuana from the criminal market. If you are interested in attending one of these events or helping to coordinate them, please contact Beth Wehrman at Lifeguard@....
If you can’t make it to these events, you can still make a difference: Please ask your legislators to support medical marijuana legislation.
At their yearly convention, the Polk County Iowa Democratic Party passed four items related to marijuana reform. They passed resolutions in favor of: legalizing hemp grown for industrial uses; repealing the drug tax stamp; removing marijuana from the criminal market and instituting civil penalties instead; and implementing a medical marijuana system in the state.

Newsweek, Nov. 14, 2005, page 36:
"The most recent evidence comes from autopsies of 44 prisoners who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan in U.S. custody. Most died under circumstances that suggest torture. The reports use words like 'strangulation,' 'asphyxiation' and 'blunt force injuries.' ...  A few months before the [Abu Ghraib] scandal broke [spring 2004], Coalition Provisional Authority polls showed Iraqi support at 63 percent. A month after Abu Ghraib, the number was 9 percent. Polls showed that 71 percent of Iraqis were surprised by the revelations."
