Philip Beckwith
pbeckwith25@...www.coalitionforhealthfreedom.orgThe Coalition for Health Freedom has just been formed to help us coordinate as we face the new international threat to supplements. www.coalitionforhealthfreedom.org
CODEX - strict new worldwide "food rules" were passed, on July 4 2005, at UN's CODEX COMMISSIONCAFTA - The Central American "Free Trade" Agreement, one way these rules will become law in America!
The Senate and Committees have both passed CAFTA - The Central American Free Trade Agreement, but CAFTA faces a very close vote in the House of Representatives, likely Monday, July 11th. This gives us only a few days for people to write to their Representative urgently.
The vote is so close, our issue could make a difference if enough people contact Congress. At the very least, Representatives will get to hear of Codex.
There are many reasons people are opposed to CAFTA, but we are asking everyone to contact Congress urgently - because it is a serious threat to U.S. Vitamin Supplements.
CAFTA is the next stage toward the "Free Trade Agreement of the Americas". It has a clause in the fine print that makes the U.S. subject to Codex, which could mean the end of our health choices as we know them, - the end of the U.S. DSHEA law that protects quality Vitamins and Mineral Supplements and Nutritional Medicine. This is because international laws override U.S. law under this agreement. All for our safety?A set of food rules or Guidelines have been cooked up over several years at an organization at the WHO under the UN, called Codex ("food code").The Guidelines for supplements were ratified in Rome yesterday, July 4th, in spite of many attempts to delay or change them. It has been ratified before the "safe upper limits" for vitamins and minerals will be announced by the WHO. So the world, including the U.S., will be signed up to something we don't know crucial details of. Their science of Risk Assessment is deeply flawed and corrupt. Neither leading scientists nor citizens have any influence over Codex (they have tried to no avail over the last few years). It is vital the U.S. does not become subject to this unaccountable organization. The FDA Delegate has been going along with this and there are many economic and other pressures to bring companies into line. There is also a scenario where it could be forced by the WTO. And yet more restrictions are being drafted in Europe that will likely end up in Codex, that means thousands of products now in use would be banned.
There is a better way to do globalization. Fine if they want a treaty, just do it so we can retain our health freedoms and other rights.
Everyone who uses quality supplements or believes in Nutritional Medicine should become aware of this. Many have asked what they can do about Codex. At last here's something practical, people can do.
Call or email your Representatives in their districts this week.In 2 clicks you can send a letter from to www.coalitionforhealthfreedom.org. You only need to know your zip code. There's lots of information there.(Later people can call their Representatives' office in Washington July 11th:
1 202 224 3121).Oppose CAFTA on the grounds that, it lays the U.S. open to the fine print that threatens our supplements, our access to vitamins, the health store, small business and jobs. Small businesses are the greatest creators of jobs. Your Representatives probably will not have heard of Codex. Let them know about this International Threat. This is NOT "Free Trade", as thousands of safe products could actually be banned.
The world is now very different with the World Trade Organization. International laws can override U.S. laws. The U.S., by joining these Free Trade Treaties is further tangled up in many laws and regulations that already are changing life in the U.S..Thanx & have A Hempy Day,Lynne Wilson, Dir.

UK doctors attack demonisation of drugs
News courtesy of Skrufff.com
Britain's leading medical journal the Lancet described illegal drugs as being an 'undeniable, even routine' part of many people's lives this week, and warned that moralistic 'war on drugs' style rhetoric is preventing doctors from tackling health related issues properly.
"The Lancet does not endorse illegal drug use but we believe that the cloak of secrecy shrouding those who use illicit substances is the most destructive feature by far of the cultural condemnation of recreational drug use," the prestigious journal declared in a leader article.
"Discussions framed by moralizing or by adherence to social ideals have little utility in a society of which drug use is an inescapable part."
The magazine's comments coincided with a Guardian feature about 'creator of MDMA' Dr Alexander Shulgin which highlighted the 'resurgence in interest in the therapeutic effects of MDMA (ecstasy)', despite its illegality."Successful results have been reported from trials in the use of MDMA on people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and in the relief of anxiety in patients with terminal cancer," the paper reported, "It is a return to the spirit of the original use of MDMA: after its synthesis by Shulgin in the late 1960s, its first use was psychotherapy."-------------------------From: tents444@...

JUDGE SOUTER'S HOUSE THREATENED WITH EMINENT DOMAIN
WASHINGTON TIMES - A businessman has asked the town of Weare, N.H.,
to seize the home of U.S. Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter in
order to build a hotel and museum on the property. Logan Darrow
Clements faxed a request to Chip Meany, Weare's code-enforcement
officer, seeking to start the application process to build a hotel
at 34 Cilley Hill Road, the site of Mr. Souter's home. . . Mr.
Clements, CEO of Freestar Media LLC, said the town would gain
greater tax revenue and economic benefits with a hotel on 34
Cilley Hill Road than allowing Justice Souter to own the land. The
proposed development, called the Lost Liberty Hotel, would feature
the Just Desserts Cafe and include a museum, open to the public,
featuring a permanent exhibit on the loss of freedom in America, Mr.
Clements said. . . "This is not a prank," Mr. Clements said. "The
town of Weare has five people on the Board of Selectmen. If three of
them vote to use the power of eminent domain to take this land from
Mr. Souter, we can begin our hotel development."http://www.washtimes.com/national/inpolitics.htm-------------------------Sent: Monday, July 04, 2005 10:58 AMSubject: National Organization for Women Endorses End to Drug WarFriends,As some of you know, besides my work with SSDP, I've been an active, committed member of the National Organization for Women. If fact, Iserve on the National NOW Young Feminist Task Force.I spent the weekend in Nashville with Deborah Small of Break the Chains,Jean Marlowe of the Women's Organization for National ProhibitionReform, Angelyn Frazer of Families Against Mandatory Minimums, and WyndiAnderson of National Advocates for Pregnant Women. Our objectives weretwo-fold: to host a session exposing the War on Drugs as a stealthattack on women, children, communities of color, and other traditionallyunderrepresented and -served populations. Many people assume NOW's oneand only concern is the protection of reproductive rights, but this isfalse. NOW's mission is to eradicate oppression in all its incarnations.Deborah moderated an amazing session. Most importantly, though, withDeborah's help, I was able to draft a resolution that the NOW Congressvoted on today. The text of the resolution is below, but this is thegist. NOW adopted a resolution that opposes the War on Drugs and in itsstead supports an approach to drug use, abuse, and addiction thatfosters compassion, health, and human rights.Plus, the resolution obligates NOW to educate its leadership andmembership about the unique impact the War on Drugs has on women thoughthe use of the organizations site, resources, materials, and literature,as well as through regular legislative updates, especially on pendingdrug laws and policies that impact women. Finally, we will work withNOW to convene an ad hoc committee to research current drug laws andpolicies with a particular impact on women and develop an action plan tobe implemented locally and nationally by NOW chapters and the NOWNational Action Center.NOW is one of the largest organizations in the country, and they have anamazing base of activists and chapters ready to take action to end theDrug War. This is HUGE! If you are unaware of the impact the War onDrugs has on women, you must log on to the Drug War Facts site on Women:http://www.drugwarfacts.org/women.htm.Imagine how many more people will now contact their Representatives andSenators as a result of NOW Action Alerts on local and national druglaws and policies.Personally, I believe that ultimately it won't be SSDP, DPA, or MPP thattakes down the Drug War. What I believe is that other, broader, largerorganizations - whether progressive or conservative - will win ourstruggle - with our help of course - by bringing the issue to themainstream. Beyond being dedicated to ending the Drug War, we are otherpeople: we are women, we are black and brown, we are poor, we are LGBT,we are members of political parties. Being a part of these communitiesis essential if we want to win, and we must be sincere, concernedmembers of these communities. We oughtn't simply pursue our own agenda, but work to promote their mission and strategies as well. That's apartnership. Please consider stepping outside of our circle and exploring the manyidentities that make you you. And, if you are a feminist, please contact me. We must ensure that NOWaccurately, creatively, and effectively engages its membership regardingthe Drug War. Please contact me if you want to be involved in thecoalition that's forming to address the intersection of the Drug War andwomen. Already the likes of Patricia Ireland, former president of NOW,have asked to work with us on taking the next steps.I absolutely must thank Deborah for her intelligence, wit, andcommitment. Without her, we wouldn't be where we are with NOW. And, ofcourse, thanks to Jean, Angelyn, and Wyndi for making the trip toNashville. Their contribution to the session was invaluable.A real movement means mobilizing those impacted by bad laws andpolicies. Many of us have chosen to choose this fight - which without adoubt is noble - but be must acknowledge those who were left without achoice. ---------------From: benziecountynorml@...PRESS/NEWS RELEASE
Note: this event will start at 2 p.m. July 23 at the UAW Hall, 703 Rose Street, Traverse City, MI 49686 (corner of Rose and Hannah).
Last summer, disabled Gulf War veteran, Matthew Barber brought the issue of medical marijuana to the attention of local citizens and officials.
After a routine traffic stop led to his arrest for possession, Matthew and his wife, Laura, went public with the story of his long battle with multiple sclerosis, the laundry list of treatments and medications which had carried debilitating side effects and brought him no relief, and the desperation which pushed them to follow the recommendation of a neurologist that Matthew try cannabis. The herb allowed him to discontinue, or greatly reduce many of his other medications, increasing his alertness and his ability to care for himself. Although cannabis cannot cure MS or reverse the course of Matthew's disease, it has slowed it's progression, and significantly improved his quality of life.
At Matthew's sentencing, Judge Michael Haley acknowledged the need for legislative change on the issue of medical marijuana, and urged the Barbers to continue their efforts toward reforming the laws.He even gave Matthew time off from house arrest to speak in support of a medical marijuana initiative in the city of Ann Arbor (which was ultimately successful). Prosecuter,Dennis LaBelle publicly stated that if he were in Matthew's shoes that he would probably use cannabis himself.
This year, through the newly-founded patient advocacy group, Coalition for Compassionate Care, the Barbers are bringing an initiative on medical marijuana before the voters of Traverse City,
and they need your help.
Soon, the Coalition will begin gathering signatures, and petition circulators are needed to ensure that the measure will be placed on November's ballot. Circulators must be registered voters residing within the Traverse City limits. Training will be provided, so even if you've never petitioned before, you will be prepared.
On July 23, at the UAW Hall, the Coalition will host a Compassionate Care Conference to educate the community about issues around the medical use of cannabis and patients' quality of life.
Speakers will include, among others, medical experts; local patients who will share their stories; Elvy Musikka,a patient in the discontinued Federal Investigational New Drugs (IND) program, which will provide her with a cannister of pre-rolled joints to treat her glaucoma every month for the rest of her life; activists from around the state and nation; and Jack Herer, author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes (widely regarded as the Hemp Bible), and himself, a medical patient. Space will be provided for alternative practitioners who wish to set up displays, demonstrations, etc., and for vending. Dinner will be available for a donation, and evening entertainment provided by the bands, Soul Pollution and Buddha Fulla Rymez.
Tickets are $15, but because our primary goal is education and outreach, no one will be turned away for lack of money.
We need:
1) Participation. Come on out! We need patients and caregivers to tell their stories or just be willing to wave when we say "Look at all the patients here. Don't they look just like the rest of us? Imagine all these folks going to jail just for trying to be well." We need people with questions about the initiative or medical cannabis in general to come out and ASK. (Even if they don't agree with us. We are seeking honest dialogue.) There will be plenty of literature and time for QA. We need vendors and alternative practionerswilling to share their creative energies and juice up the vibe. If you know any of these people (or if you are any of these people), CALL US. Let's talk.
2) Volunteers. We need volunteers to help with fundraising events (bake sales, etc); we need volunteers to help with publicity (you can start by passing this email on to anyone/everyone and announcing us at your events); we need volunteers for set-up, clean-up, and every phase in between. Frankly, we need volunteers for so many things, we're not even sure yet what they all are --- but we WILL let you know.
3) Of course, donations. In order to put on a quality conference with high-caliber speakers from around the country, we need to raise $5000, and we need to raise it now.
As a fledgling organization, we don't have any long-term relationships with the traditional funders of drug-policy reform measures, and the very idea of a conference in support of a ballot initiative is new to them. In the past, their strategies have not included such large-scale,transparent efforts to engage the whole community in dialogue; but we believe that the people in this area respect openess and have a sincere desire to be involved and educated on the issues. So we are relying on grass-roots efforts (donation jars in businesses, bake sales, dinners), our own grocery money, and the generous hearts of our commUnity.
Won't you please help to educate the community and protect patients' quality of life? Checks or money orders can be made out to Coalition for Compassionate Care and mailed to 2802 Holiday Pines Road, Traverse City, MI 49686.
For more information, to volunteer, or to obtain advance conference tickets, please contact Melody at (231)885-2993 or Laura at (231)218-0204, or email us at tcmedmj@....
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Study: Smoking Marijuana Does Not Cause Lung CancerBy FRED GARDNERMarijuana smoking -"even heavy longterm use"- does not cause cancer of the lung, upper airwaves, or esophagus, Donald Tashkin reported at this year's meeting of the International Cannabinoid Research Society. Coming from Tashkin, this conclusion had extra significance for the assembled drug-company and university-based scientists (most of whom get funding from the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse). Over the years, Tashkin's lab at UCLA has produced irrefutable evidence of the damage that marijuana smoke wreaks on bronchial tissue. With NIDA's support, Tashkin and colleagues have identified the potent carcinogens in marijuana smoke, biopsied and made photomicrographs of pre-malignant cells, and studied the molecular changes occurring within them. It is Tashkin's research that the Drug Czar's office cites in ads linking marijuana to lung cancer. Tashkin himself has long believed in a causal relationship, despite a study in which Stephen Sidney examined the files of 64,000 Kaiser patients and found that marijuana users didn't develop lung cancer at a higher rate or die earlier than non-users. Of five smaller studies on the question, only two -involving a total of about 300 patients- concluded that marijuana smoking causes lung cancer. Tashkin decided to settle the question by conducting a large, prospectively designed, population-based, case-controlled study. "Our major hypothesis," he told the ICRS, "was that heavy, longterm use of marijuana will increase the risk of lung and upper-airwaves cancers."
The Los Angeles County Cancer Surveillance program provided Tashkin's team with the names of 1,209 L.A. residents aged 59 or younger with cancer (611 lung, 403 oral/pharyngeal, 90 laryngeal, 108 esophageal). Interviewers collected extensive lifetime histories of marijuana, tobacco, alcohol and other drug use, and data on diet, occupational exposures, family history of cancer, and various "socio-demographic factors." Exposure to marijuana was measured in joint years (joints per day x 365). Controls were found based on age, gender and neighborhood. Among them, 46% had never used marijuana, 31% had used less than one joint year, 12% had used 10-30 j-yrs, 2% had used 30-60 j-yrs, and 3% had used for more than 60 j-yrs. Tashkin controlled for tobacco use and calculated the relative risk of marijuana use resulting in lung and upper airwaves cancers. All the odds ratios turned out to be less than one (one being equal to the control group's chances)! Compared with subjects who had used less than one joint year, the estimated odds ratios for lung cancer were .78; for 1-10 j-yrs, .74; for 10-30 j-yrs, .85 for 30-60 j-yrs; and 0.81 for more than 60 j-yrs. The estimated odds ratios for oral/pharyngeal cancers were 0.92 for 1-10 j-yrs; 0.89 for 10-30 j-yrs; 0.81 for 30-60 j-yrs; and 1.0 for more than 60 j-yrs. "Similar, though less precise results were obtained for the other cancer sites," Tashkin reported. "We found absolutely no suggestion of a dose response." The data on tobacco use, as expected, revealed "a very potent effect and a clear dose-response relationship -a 21-fold greater risk of developing lung cancer if you smoke more than two packs a day." Similarly high odds obtained for oral/pharyngeal cancer, laryngeal cancer and esophageal cancer. "So, in summary" Tashkin concluded, "we failed to observe a positive association of marijuana use and other potential confounders."
There was time for only one question, said the moderator, and San Francisco oncologist Donald Abrams, M.D., was already at the microphone: "You don't see any positive correlation, but in at least one category [marijuana-only smokers and lung cancer], it almost looked like there was a negative correlation, i.e., a protective effect. Could you comment on that?"
"Yes," said Tashkin. "The odds ratios are less than one almost consistently, and in one category that relationship was significant, but I think that it would be difficult to extract from these data the conclusion that marijuana is protective against lung cancer. But that is not an unreasonable hypothesis."
Abrams had results of his own to report at the ICRS meeting. He and his colleagues at San Francisco General Hospital had conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled study involving 50 patients with HIV-related peripheral neuropathy. Over the course of five days, patients recorded their pain levels in a diary after smoking either NIDA-supplied marijuana cigarettes or cigarettes from which the THC had been extracted. About 25% didn't know or guessed wrong as to whether they were smoking the placebos, which suggests that the blinding worked. Abrams requested that his results not be described in detail prior to publication in a peer-reviewed medical journal, but we can generalize: they exceeded expectations, and show marijuana providing pain relief comparable to Gabapentin, the most widely used treatment for a condition that afflicts some 30% of patients with HIV.
To a questioner who bemoaned the difficulty of "separating the high from the clinical benefits," Abrams replied: "I'm an oncologist as well as an AIDS doctor and I don't think that a drug that creates euphoria in patients with terminal diseases is having an adverse effect." His study was funded by the University of California's Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research.
* * *
The 15th annual meeting of the ICRS was held at the Clearwater, Florida, Hilton, June 24-27. Almost 300 scientists attended. R. Stephen Ellis, MD, of San Francisco, was the sole clinician from California. Los Angeles Farmacy operator Mike Ommaha and therapist/cultivator Pat Humphrey showed up to audit the proceedings... Some of the younger European scientists expressed consternation over the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling and the vote in Congress re-enforcing the cannabis prohibition. "How can they dispute that it has medical effect?" an investigator working in Germany asked us earnestly. She had come to give a talk on "the role of different neuronal populations in the pharmacological actions of delta-9 THC." For most ICRS members, the holy grail is a legal synthetic drug that exerts the medicinal effects of the prohibited herb. To this end they study the mechanism of action by which the body's own cannabinoids are assembled, function, and get broken down. A drug that encourages production or delays dissolution, they figure, might achieve the desired effect without being subject to "abuse..." News on the scientific front included the likely identification of a third cannabinoid receptor expressed in tissues of the lung, brain, kidney, spleen and smaller branches of the mesenteric artery. Investigators from GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca both reported finding the new receptor but had different versions of its pharmacology. It may have a role in regulating blood pressure.
Several talks and posters described the safety and efficacy of Sativex, G.W. Pharmaceuticals' whole-plant extract containing high levels of THC and CBD (cannabidiol) formulated to spray in the mouth. G.W. director Geoffrey Guy seemed upbeat, despite the drubbing his company's stock took this spring when UK regulators withheld permission to market Sativex pending another clinical trial. Canada recently granted approval for doctors to prescribe Sativex, and five sales reps from Bayer (to whom G.W. sold the Canadian marketing rights) are promoting it to neurologists. Sativex was approved for the treatment of neuropathic pain in multiple sclerosis, but can be prescribed for other purposes as doctors see fit.
A more detailed report on the ICRS meeting will appear in the upcoming issue of O'Shaughnessy's, a journal put out by California's small but growing group of pro-cannabis doctors. To get on the mailing list, send a contribution of any amount to the CCRMG (California Cannabis Research Medical Group) at p.o. box 9143, Berkeley, CA 94709. Meanwhile, Back in San Francisco...
The California contingent was en route to the ICRS meeting when Marian Fry, M.D. and her husband, attorney Dale Schafer, were arrested on federal charges of conspiring to provide marijuana to a patient. On the same day, three San Francisco cannabis clubs were raided by the DEA and 19 people -all Asians and a few Latinos- charged with conspiracy to cultivate and distribute marijuana. Affidavits allege that they grew cannabis in rented houses in S.F., the East Bay and the Peninsula for sale to dispensaries and on the black market. Three men were charged with intent to sell ecstasy. (An undercover agent allegedly had purchased 1,000 tabs from a man named Enrique Chan. During the raids on 26 locations, a total of 50 tabs were found on one individual.) The two alleged ringleaders, Richard Wang and Vincent Wan, were charged with money laundering. Defense lawyers say the alleged money laundering consisted of using dispensary proceeds to underwrite the grow ops. At a July 1 detention hearing, bail for Wang was set at $2 million. Wan has not yet been apprehended or turned himself in.Former district attorney Terence Hallinan is representing Sergio Alvarez, who hired him several months ago after police raided a house in the Sunset district where Alvarez was allegedly cultivating marijuana. "I didn't know at the time that that would become part of a conspiracy case," Hallinan said after the detention hearing. Alvarez's bail was set at $500,000; his working-class parents are putting up their modest Sunnyvale home as surety. Hallinan says that every cannabis dispensary has links to a network of growers, and that the decision to take down these three was an attempt to exploit anti-Asian sentiment. "They asked themselves, 'Who will we start with now that we've been given permission [by the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the Raich case]? Let's go after the Chinese!' San Francisco has more than a hundred-year history of anti-Chinese attitudes and policies." Contemporary resentments towards Asians in San Francisco center around their apparent economic successes. It's an impossibly expensive housing market, and one occasionally hears non-Asians say, with mixed admiration and envy, things like: "How can they arrive from Hong Kong in 1995 and buy a house in the Sunset in 1996?" The answer is: by pooling resources (conspiring) with friends and family to make the down payment.----------------------------------------From: emeraldempirehempfest@...Eugene, Oregon - We want to let everyone know that the Emerald Empire HempFest will happen again in July of 2005! After last year's problems (read 'What Really Happened with Hempfest 2004?' at our website www.oregonhempfest.com) we are looking forward to having a very successful event. After the very positive response to the idea of having a HempFest in Eugene, OR and in order to be more attractive to quality vendors we decided to extend the event to two days, July 16 & 17 (The weekend following the Oregon Country Faire).
The Emerald Empire HempFest we have envisioned for this year promises to be a blast for all ages. We plan to have a stage, with music and speakers, a food court, art booths, vendors and non-profit booths. Guest speakers will speak throughout the day about the hope Cannabis Hemp provides and the ways it is becoming legal.
Vendor & volunteer applications are available for download on our website. We can also e-mail it to you as an MS Word document attachment or we can mail it.
Planning meetings are at 7:00pm, Tue, 7/5 and 7/12 at the Washington-Jefferson Park. That's between Washington St and Jefferson St, between 2nd Av and the RR tracks, near the basketball courts.
Urgent: Sponsors, vendors and volunteers needed!!
No booth fees for Non-Profits without sale items.

Hamilton CI RAPIST
This email concerns several victims of sexual assault by a former CO at a prison in Florida.
The basic facts are that there was a Corrections Officer named David Deas at Hamilton C.I. in Jasper, Florida. I know that at least as far back as 1999 inmates complained about Deas making sexual advances, sexual assault, battery, rape, etc.. Back then he was Food Service Director at Hamilton Annex.
Incredibly, even with the complaints, Deas was later transferred to the position of Classification Officer where he had direct control of the classification of inmates. He abused his power many times, and raped and sodomized numerous inmates. He was finally stopped in 2003 when one of his victims told a (good) CO who actually did something about it. This was only after years of all the other Corrections officials doing nothing to stop him from raping numerous victims.
After he was set up and caught in the act, Deas resigned his position in April 2003. He pleaded guilty to much lesser crimes of sexual contact with inmates and received a year of house arrest and 10 years of probation.
Four of Deas's victims are filing a lawsuit. I am sure there are many at Hamilton (or who were there then) both employees and inmates, who know about Deas and know of other witnesses.
We are currently trying to locate an address for former warden Bobby Dodd so he can be served, but are having a hard time finding him.
I appreciate anything readers can do to help locate witnesses and information. Please contact me, KAYLEE---------------------Tue 5 Jul 2005They came looking for trouble. . they got their wishALAN RODEN and LINDA SUMMERHAYES
IT started out as a peaceful protest in the sunshine.
The smiling faces of clowns greeted curious onlookers and the huge media pack at what had been billed as the start of the Carnival of Full Enjoyment.
At midday, the ragtag army gathering in Shandwick Place did seem to the casual observer intent on nothing more than enjoying themselves.
Whistles blew and drums beat to a samba rhythm.
The only ominous sign of things to come was the presence of a handful of anarchists dressed in black, members of the notorious Ya Basta movement, who tried to disrupt Saturday's Make Poverty History march.
But the antics of hundreds of fancy-dressed revellers on Edinburgh's streets were overshadowed in one sudden moment.
At precisely 1pm, and with no warning, the all-in-black figures, who had gradually grown in number, decided to storm the line of police preventing the protesters from continuing their noisy march.
They didn't get very far, but the atmosphere of the day changed and the carnival spirit never really came back.
An air of menace, rarely felt in the centre of the Capital, hung in the air for the rest of the day and into the night.
Within the melee that unfolded among the mob of hundreds of protesters corralled by police on Canning Street, near the Capital's financial district, the scene was often chaotic.
One anarchist fell and vomited on the street, another collapsed and said he couldn't breathe. A woman said she was kicked by an officer, people called for medics and the anarchists' legal team screamed about human rights.
But the police weren't letting anyone out, not even some terrified female journalists, and the majority of protesters were to spend the next four hours stuck inside the police trap.
One anarchist from Sussex, carrying a sign with a baby doll's head impaled on top of it, stood at the front of the crowd and shouted at the officers. The 21-year-old said: "We're not violent or dangerous, we're just against oppression. We're here to enjoy ourselves."
An angry-looking woman stormed past, wearing a T-shirt with a picture of Ronald McDonald and the word "Satan".
One protester managed to scale a wall overlooking the street, around 25ft up. Waving a black flag, he threatened to urinate over officers, before he turned around and seemingly contemplated defecating instead. Fortunately, he changed his mind and was content to bare his buttocks to the cheering crowd.
There was a surreal quality to events at times as legal advice was dished out to the demonstrators by protest organisers.Legal experts from the radical Dissent network wandered around the group, handing out advice on what to do if arrested. Others played football with a stolen police officer's hat, aware they were in for a long haul.
It wasn't quite the same on Princes Street, where the Infernal Noise Brigade - a band of 20 musicians dressed in orange and black - had missed the start of the now infamous Carnival for Full Enjoyment, and were staging their own march.
They started off by harmlessly pulling faces at the lines of police stretched across Princes Street, but as numbers swelled, the anarchists began a direct challenge against both riot police and mounted officers.
Protesters blowing whistles stood on top of bus stops, while others flying flags and dressed in black cheered and clapped. The tension was briefly broken when a naked protester ran along Princes Street with two clowns in tow to the delight of bystanders.
But the sinister presence of the anarchists, their faces covered with scarves, was clearly unnerving for all involved.
Princes Street was overrun with more than 40 police vans, and crowds of people, including hundreds of members of the public, were herded on to The Mound as officers tried to control the demonstration. As riot police tried to push half of the protesters into a section of Princes Street, shoppers and tourists were told to stay away and forcibly pushed back.
Some people could be seen inside the police cordon receiving treatment for head injuries, while around them the demonstrations continued. When the group, now numbering around 250, was forced into Princes Street Gardens at about 2.30pm, there was a look of glee on their faces - and fear on those of innocent passers-by.
Flowers were uprooted and benches commemorating loved ones were torn from the ground and hurled at officers. But then, as in Canning Street, the protesters realised they were stuck. So members of the Clandestine Rebel Insurgents Clown Army began replanting the flowers and other anti-capitalists sat on the grass to enjoy a picnic.
One clown said: "We are really here to keep people happy, keeping the crowd happy and keeping the cops happy."
On Waverley Bridge, where another group of protesters was being held, somebody used a feather duster on a policeman's riot gear, while another used bright pink lipstick to draw a smiling face on a shield.
On Princes Street, where yet another crowd was being detained, anti-capitalists spent their time banging drums and throwing a beach ball around.
One protester wearing a monkey mask climbed on to a traffic light to view the spectacle.
Some said the police reaction had been over the top, while others, including visitors, were upset by the actions of the protesters.
When police tried to reverse their vans along Princes Street, they found themselves surrounded by protesters, who stopped the vans from moving while they hurled bottles and sticks. Back in Canning Street
there were more skirmishes when police decided to send the protesters home, and a number of people were dragged kicking and screaming by officers.
Meanwhile, at an evening skirmish outside Sainsbury's on Rose Street, there was real panic as the public - many of whom were just being curious - ran in droves from the oncoming lines of mounted police. Suddenly the bang of drums was replaced by the noise of smashing glass while bricks and pallets were hurled at the unflinching officers.
However, as quickly as the tension built, it dissipated once more, with only a handful of protesters left on Princes Street playing football within the police cordon. By 8.30pm only several hundred protesters remained in Princes Street. The football was confiscated by police, sparking threats of a riot, but there didn't seem enough energy left among the demonstrators.
When the police cordon was broken, most headed up to Bristo Square, where the Dissent network has converged in the Teviot House student union.
A small, hard-core group of skinheads, mostly from Edinburgh and probably not anti-capitalists, caused some trouble outside a McDonald's late at night. But the majority of protesters sat outside Teviot House drinking beer and smoking cannabis, dissecting the day's events.****!!! Treatment Protocol for Alcoholism
(Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, July 1, 2005)
A Message from Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D.:
"Ever since I met Bill W, the cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous and we became close friends, I have had a personal interest in the treatment of alcoholism. Bill taught that there were three components to the treatment of alcoholism: spiritual, mental and medical. AA provided a spiritual home for alcoholics that many could not find anywhere else and helped them sustain abstinence. But for many AA alone was not enough; not everyone in AA had achieved a comfortable sobriety. Bill recognized that the other two components were important. When he heard of our use of niacin for treating alcoholics, he became very enthusiastic about it because niacin gave these unfortunate patients immense relief from their chronic depression and other physical and mental complaints.
"Niacin is the most important single treatment for alcoholism, and it is one of the most reliable treatments. And it is safe, much safer than any of the modern psychiatric drugs. Niacin does not work as well when alcoholics are still drinking but in a few cases it has decreased the intake of alcohol until they were abstinent. This conclusion is based on the work my colleagues and I have done since 1953.
"I know of many alcoholics who did not want to stop drinking, but did agree to take niacin. Over the years, they gradually were able to reduce their intake until they brought it under control. Some alcoholics can even become social drinkers on a very small scale. I have not found many who could. But I think that if started on the program very early, many more could achieve normalcy. I suspect that treatment centers using those ideas will be made available one day, and will be much more successful than the standard treatment today. This all too often still consists of dumping them into hospitals and letting them dry out, with severe pain and suffering. When they are discharged, most go right back to the alcohol, the most dangerous and widely used street drug available without a prescription.
"Orthomolecular treatment is the treatment of choice. The following protocol for alcoholism outlines the importance of the nutritional factors that have been shown to be very successful on treating this condition. The treatment can be used alone but is best combined with dietary advice and additional nutrients."The late Dr. Roger Williams, a chemistry professor at the University of Texas and former president of the American Chemical Society, also wrote extensively on the alcoholism.[1] Dr. Williams recommended large doses of vitamins and an amino acid called L-glutamine.
What should the alcoholic do to help stop drinking and return his or her body to normal functioning? Supply the following nutrients to the body:1. Vitamin C to saturation (on the order of 10,000 to 20,000 mg per day and more). High doses of vitamin C chemically neutralize the toxic breakdown products of alcohol metabolism. Vitamin C also increases the liver's ability to reverse the fatty build-up so common in alcoholics. To titrate to saturation, take 1000 mg of vitamin C every hour. When saturation is reached, there will be a single episode of diarrhea; then reduce the dosage to 1000 mg every four hours.2. A B50-complex tablet (comprising 50 mg of each of the major B-vitamins, 6 times daily).
3. L-Glutamine (2000 or 3000 mg). L-Glutamine is an amino acid that decreases physiological cravings for alcohol. It is one the two primary energy providers that burn glycogen to provide fuel to the brain and stimulates many neurofunctions. L- Glutamine is naturally produced in the liver and kidneys. Alcohol harms the kidneys and liver, thus supplementation is vital (concurrently reducing cravings for sugar and alcohol).
4. Lecithin (2 to 4 tablespoons daily). Provides inositol and choline, related to the B-complex. Lecithin also helps mobilize fats out of the liver.
5. Chromium (at least 200 to perhaps 400 mcg chromium polynicotinate daily). Chromium greatly reduces carbohydrate mis-metabolism, and greatly helps control blood sugar levels. Many, if not most, alcoholics are hypoglycemic.6. A good high-potency multi-vitamin, multi-mineral supplement as well, containing magnesium (400 mg) and the antioxidants carotene and d-alpha tocopherol.
In summary, the alcoholic's body needs the proper nutrients in adequate quantities to return to normal metabolic functioning. The above nutrients are safe, effective, inexpensive and available from discount stores or health food stores without prescription.
There is not even one death per year from vitamins. Pharmaceutical drugs, properly prescribed and taken as directed, kill over 100,000 Americans annually. Hospital errors kill still more.
Most illness is due fundamentally to malnutrition. This not only includes the chronic diseases, but also viral and bacterial acute illness, which are greatly aggravated by inadequate nutrition.
Supplements are not the problem; they are the solution. Malnutrition is the problem.
What is Orthomolecular Medicine?
Linus Pauling defined orthomolecular medicine as "the treatment of disease by the provision of the optimum molecular environment, especially the optimum concentrations of substances normally present in the human body." Orthomolecular medicine uses safe, effective nutritional therapy to fight illness. For more information: http://www.orthomolecular.org

That anonymous fellow just keeps forwarding me new stories. Here is what he
wrote this time:
"Yesterday, after reading all information I could find on the use of V.
africana, I decided to try it for myself, having recently come into possession of a
small amount.
About 80 seeds were ground and capsulated, resulting in 7 pills. No smell was
noticed. I read that the Ibogoid-type alkaloids present in the seeds can act
as CNS depressants so I avoided any GHB (better safe than sorry).
More on voacanga.
http://leda.lycaeum.org/?ID=6064
At about 4:00 I took the pills. No effect was noticed until about 2 hours
later, which was manifested as a quite subtle stimulated, euphoric feeling. The
feeling was quite mild and about 3 hours after that, I felt unusually tired and
took a 2-hour nap. (I had a rather unpleasant dream, I should add, although I
don't know if this is attributable to the V. africana or not). No nausea was
experienced from ingestion of the material.
I woke up feeling pretty much "normal". This experiment did little to peak my
interest in this plant, I don't think I'll be going out of my way to try it
again any time soon. Not very interesting."

Ibogaine is a natural alkaloid of Voacanga africana that is effective in the
treatment of withdrawal symptoms and craving in drug addicts. As the synaptic
and cellular basis of ibogaine's actions are not well understood, this study
tested the hypothesis that ibogaine and Voacanga africana extract modulate
neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission in the parabrachial nucleus using
the nystatin perforated patch-recording technique. Ibogaine and Voacanga
africana extract dose dependently, reversibly, and consistently attenuate evoked
excitatory synaptic currents recorded in parabrachial neurons. The ED50 of
ibogaine's effect is 5 microM, while that of Voacanga africana extract is 170
micrograms/ml. At higher concentrations, ibogaine and Voacanga africana extract
induce inward currents or depolarization that are accompanied by increases in
evoked and spontaneous firing rate. The depolarization or inward current is also
accompanied by an increase in input resistance and reverses polarity around 0
mV. The depolarization and synaptic depression were blocked by the dopamine
receptor antagonist haloperidol. These results indicate that ibogaine and
Voacanga africana extract 1) depolarize parabrachial neurons with increased
excitability and firing rate; 2) depress non-NMDA receptor-mediated fast synaptic
transmission; 3) involve dopamine receptor activation in their actions. These
results further reveal that the Voacanga africana extract has one-hundredth the
activity of ibogaine in depressing synaptic responses. Thus, ibogaine and
Voacanga africana extract may produce their central effects by altering dopaminergicand glutamatergic processes.From:ekkijdfg@... Subject:[Ibogaine] ibogaine & nightlife
i know this will piss some people off - sorry! -
recently took a little iboga and went out dancing to minimal techno. was real fun. took only a little but enough to feel it significantly. i already knew by experience it makes the music more intense. had to sit down a few times to regenerate. could have had drinks & lines(speed) for free but of course didn´t feel like it but had a few puffs of weed in the morning and that was psychedelic and when i closed my eyes it looked like dave hunter´s ibogaine-inspired art in motion. at the afterhour party i felt surprisingly clear and was quite talkative, which is unusual for me when i´m stoned after clubbing.

good for you! I LIKE reports like this- remember, Howard Lotsof's first experience was as an entertainment, only realizing the benefits as to his opiate habit afterwards. First and foremost he took it for the FUN. And I have to say that that booster was not only beneficial, it was FUN too, and anything that's going to take me on inner-learning voyages and make them fun too (and I consider the heavy duty "holy shit, that's heavy" things "fun" too a lot of the time), more power to it and us who use it. Very small amounts to take on a dance floor (think dancing of the native Gabonese during the beinnings of a session) and I think you've got some magic going on there Ekki.

Hi Preston,
My first experience, as many others, were not for entertainment but, as an
experiment to observe effects of drugs and of course of myself on drugs.
Experimentation as a process was fun for me. I continued to take ibogaine because
it amazed me. What I sought in drugs was a sense of well being and an absence
of pain and when I was younger (ah to experience it again) a sense of pleasure
that was often the absence of pain and participation in dreamscapes and not
all ibogaine as there was a before ibogaine and there was an after ibogaine and
the participation in life without fear and that does not mean without an
understanding of danger.
I'm not sure I ever took a drug for fun. Pursuing the dream of ibogaine as a
regulated drug was fun. It was purpose. It was art.

MY thinking exactly. See Nick, if I look and think long enough, I'm sure to find common ground even with those I most disagree with- it just takes time and patience- and most of all, compassion and understanding and lack of judgement.
I'm currently watching the current METHAMPHETAMINE scare stories on C-Span, stories that sound EXACTLY like the crack scare stories of the 80s, where different communnities and politicians were COMPETEING with one another to be THE meth captial of the countyry- "I have the worst problem in my town, ""No, WE'RE the worst," "Nuh-Uh! My community is most overrun with gang and meth violence- but thank goodness the US taxpayer is going to give us even more money to wage our war so long as we keep trumpeting these horrible dangers!"
I'm not in the slightest bit making light of the dangers of methamphetamine abuse- but once again, prohibition is only making the problem worse, as always.
Egad!
Anyway, nice to hear such positive words from you Nick, and hope you're doing well.

In the original 1960s period, at 19, in the superlative strength of youth, I
would drop 400/500mgs, wait for the visionary period to pass (4 hours) and hit
the streets to observe with amazement the open secrets (who is who and what
is what) of our society amidst the flashes of iboga light. A wonderful way to
have a break in our world. It is helpful if you know what you are doing. I
went alone and in groups of like effected friends. It is amazing how much
stamina you have when young.

Subject:RE: [Ibogaine] ibogaine & nightlife Ibogaine has been banned in the US and a few other countries because, as I understand it, there was a carpet ban on a lot of tryptamines undertaken at this time. Since then it was banned in Denmark and nearly in the UK. About Denmark I don't recall the reason but in the UK it was because of a death. I heard rumours a few years ago the Dutch were thinking of banning it for similar reasons, but again I don't recall so well the exact details. Anyway, I've not heard of anyone suggesting that ibogaine has abuse potential or of any governments planning on banning it for such. So I don't see any problem here. A drug that gives you ataxia at a relatively low dose threshold, I mean it doesn't have so much abuse potential really, I figure.

From:vivienneelanta@... Subject:[Ibogaine] signal to noise
With respect for all and no anger towards any:
I know there are more ibogaine lists here, there is this main list, the
sacrament list and I think Patrick said he made the ibeganagain list for those
who wanted to make friends or freak out or anything at all.
I love this place, but everyone from the world of ibogaine who says something I
want to hear is on this list but then any time I open my mailbox there are 400
new messages of the same group of folks chatting filling up my email, that
could just as easily be cced to 5 people and there is no need to send it to the
5,000 sitting in the audience.
I think it took a tremendous amount of work to make all of Mindvox and takes
even more work and money to keep it running, when 5 people begin to use it as
their personal social club it is a little thoughtless.
I can't see any simple solution, Patrick did mention how online community works
and reading the background of mindvox I guess you would know, Mindvox is
referenced in most books on online community and how people interact and
there's Patrick appearing in Ph.D thesis' from 10 and 15 years back. You do get
around Mr. Kroupa! :^)
The problem is that some of the same people who talk the most and I can open up
my email and find 20 letters from them in 2 days, will put some of the most
interesting and useful information in a sentence down at the end of a message
somewhere in the middle.
Then I ask myself am I missing some gems that get buried but what Capt. Kirk
said is true too, how many exciting new updates happen each day in the world of
ibogaine and then there are the mindvox, ibogaine.org, ibogaineuk sites to list
that anyway.
The conclusion I'm left with for myself is the list works because if I want to
ask a question, there have always been so many people here who will answer it
and the more answers there are, usually at least 2 or 3 are useful to me!
If I was looking for help and depressed and miserable, finding this place would
be like coming home and finding hope. I'd love it and feel great.
What's left of all this, anyone who is anyone is signed up here and the most
unexpected people post once in a blue moon showing they are reading here. There
is a huge community and support here, that's helping. I can't say I wish
certain people would stop posting here every time they change the channel on
TV, because those same people post some really helpful messages.
I read some of the theory of how online community works and I have to guess
Mindvox is doing the right thing because all it does is keep going and growing
and it started doing this in 1991!
What can I say except I hope that some of the people who are the most chatty,
understand that because you write 20 messages here every two days, I would
think many people here miss everything you are saying.
I haven't blocked anyone's email exclusively but I do admint that when I see
the names hslotosf, digital, schmoolyboy, a few others, I read every message.
When I see the names captkirk and preston filling up my email, I don't get to
read most of what you say because I can't keep up with it. When I see someone I
don't know I read it, when I see even a message or two I read it too, when I
see 20 messages from captkirk and preston in not even 2 days but in two hours!,
I have to admit I give up and don't read any of them. Which is my loss because
both of you share some very interesting information.
I don't know what to say because there is more signal here then anywhere on the
whole internet, about ibogaine. all the best minds and most experienced shamans
are here. there is also the most "noise" or chatter and then the chatter is
back to being community and its not really noise.

Also here is an interesting article about the safety of Ibogaine:
Clinical Observations of Safety after Single Oral Dose Administrationby Deborah .C. Mash; K. Allen-Ferdinand; M. Mayor; C.A. Kovera; J.F. Ayafor; I.C. Williams; F.R. Ervin
Healing Visions Institute for Addiction RecoveryIbogaine, a naturally occurring indole alkaloid derived from the roots of Tabernanthe iboga, is currently under investigation as a therapeutic agent for drug dependence. We report here preliminary observations on the safety of single oral dose administration of ibogaine to cocaine and heroin dependent subjects. Baseline screening included a medical evaluation, physical examination, ECG, blood chemistries, and hematological work-up, as well as psychiatric and chemical dependency evaluations. Subjects (N=30) were assigned to one of three fixed-dose treatments under open label conditions: 500 mg, 600 mg, and 800 mg ibogaine. Adverse events were assessed by clinical side-effects ratings and open-ended query. No significant adverse events were seen under these study conditions. The most frequent side effects were nausea and mild tremor at early time points after drug administration. Random regression of vital signs (respiration rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressures and pulse) revealed no significant changes across time or by treatment condition. White blood count, neutrophil levels, sodium or potassium levels were in the normal range. No significant changes from baseline were seen for ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and GGT. Intensive monitoring demonstrated that no electrocardiographic abnormalities were produced or exaggerated following ibogaine administration. These preliminary results demonstrate that single doses of ibogaine were well tolerated in drug-dependent subjects, and that there were no significant problems with safety. Phone: (877) IBOGA-50
Fax: (619) 330-1810
They look clean and professional as well as caring. I called and spoke to someone on the phone who was kind and understanding.
Like I said I have not been treated by them and cannot validate that this is an "OK" place, but if your in the position to check it out, it could be something very useful.

I just woke up after a low dosage self-therapy last night to overcome a low-level addiction to opiates. The feeling now is a quiet, happy sense of empowerment. After the kind help of someone to help me get the ibo, I did this on my own, carefully determing the dosages after studying the internet resources and retreating into my little meditation shrine to read Dharma books after each dosage and listening to traditional Tibetan music toward the end. For me this experience underlines the truth that, ultimately, we all can - and must - become our own therapists.
This message isn't for everyone, since I know there are some who may disagree - I wish them all well. For those few though who insist on doing things in your own time, in your own space and in your own way, and who have the insight to do it: this message is for you: don't be afraid - there's a way.
With much love,BenFrom:nick227@... Subject:RE: [Ibogaine] London prayers
Hi Preston,
Thank you.
I'm not in London and I never really read the news or get to see tv but I
feel very sad about it and people are pretty shocked. I think we're gonna do
some silence here at the centre where I live.
No doubt, Al Qaeda will be blamed or take responsibility, but this is pure
bullshit, if you ask me. It's just the same deal as with the WTC. The
americans blow it up to create a situation they can exploit for their ownends. Same with London. Right at a time when everyone's moving against the
id cards scheme and the G8 summit's in town, hey presto, whaddya know,
there's a sudden terrorist attack and we all just have to go into crisis
mode. A load of innocent people get killed and, no doubt, arabs up and down
the country will be getting shit for the next decade and....it's all just a
fucking set-up. The whole thing. Cue a load of repressive measures to be
introduced by our wonderful government, all in the name of "stopping
terrorism." I can hardly wait.
All I can say is...I just pray one day people are gonna be sufficiently free
of fear to look at this. When a threshold number of people get to see the
footage of the Pentagon on 9/11, which I challenge anyone anywhere to find
any airliners in, they're going to have to ask what actually is really
happening here. How actually do you explain the chasmic discrepancy between
what the news-teams reported and what all the physical evidence available
actually suggested? And if it's clear that the attacks weren't carried out
by terrorists, then who did do it? For people to have the strength to
actually ask this, that's what I'm holding out for.Nick From:HSLotsof@... Subject:[Ibogaine] future of the news media
