Global Marijuana March Surpasses 2004 numbers [Fwd]   Message List

Richmond recently dropped out of MMM 2005. Also, Cheltenham,
Fotaleza, and Zagreb have been deleted from the city list on
the web due to not having any contact info at all for them.
I have contacted neighboring cities and they know nothing
either. That means there are 176 cities, not 180. Please
contact us if you have any city list updates. Click:

Global Marijuana March Surpasses Last Year!

With less than 10 days to go until Saturday, May 7, Global March organizers announced that this year's event--in more than 180 cities--has already surpassed last year's total of 166 cities. Most of the new cities are in former East Bloc countries including Sofia, Bulgaria and Kiev, Ukraine. Prague just informed New York headquarters that theirs will be the biggest yet, while Budapest's event will finish up a "civil obedience" campaign featuring various well-known artists and political figures turning themselves in for using cannabis.

Organizers ascribed increased numbers to greater cooperation from HIGH TIMES, which ran the complete directory of cities in its May and "Best of" issues; and Cannabis Culture, which printed and distributed its own poster with different local information for each city. Cures not Wars was also able to print and ship a poster this year instead of distributing virtual posters on CD's for each city to print up on its own.

This year's Global March sharpened its message by calling for Public Health, and not just Medical, Marijuana. Organizers estimated that more than half a million lives a year could be saved  in the U.S. alone by switching patterns of consumption from alcohol/cigarettes to cannabis. Pot doesn't cause traffic accidents and domestic violence, like alcohol. And contrary to the Partnership for a Drug Free America, nicotine is the principle carcinogen in tobacco--not the burn products--while cannabinoids actually block cancer.

"Even chewing tobacco will give you cancer of the lip and gum, while there has never been a report of stomach cancer from marijuana brownies,"  said Dana Beal, initiator of the Global March.

"It looks like we are well on our way to rebuilding the Million Marijuana March up to its high-water mark of 236 cities," Beal continued. March organizers have already called on all of this year's cities as well as ones that may have dropped out to sign up now for 2006. "We think that we have real growth potential in India, Australia and West Africa. We'd like to have 400 cities in '06," he said.

In New York City, where the event originated in 1972, the this year's March kicks off at Houston and Broadway at 1 PM, Saturday, May 7.
