Cannabis March May 2, 3, 4!
January 22, 2003Re: the Medical Marijuana BillI would like to thank the committee today for the chance to expand upon my remarks in order to refute the erroneous impression left by certain speakers at the hearing in December that cannabis is pharmacologically identical to alcohol or opiates. In fact, alcohol and opiates act through the glutamate pathways; they are pro-inflammatory, like nicotine, as opposed to cannabinols, which down-regulate glutamate and inflammation. You will remember what I said before about marijuana's anti-carcinogenic properties. There are studies that show smoking pot produces "precancerous" cellular alterations. Prohibition supporters often claim marijuana smoke has even more cancer causing compounds than does tobacco smoke. However, this claim is based on the tar content of cannabis LEAVES. Cannabis users do not smoke leaves; the BUDS contain only 30% as much tar as tobacco.Recent scientific studies have shown that cancer-causing effects are specifically due to nicotine. In fact, nicotine through nicotine receptors in the airways protects cells damaged by the carcinogens found in tobacco smoke from dying. Cells that are genetically damaged by carcinogens and protected from dying are the cells that go on to become cancer cells. The question becomes will pot smokers develop lung cancer as do cigarette smokers, but perhaps at a slower rate.In this regard, established facts on the impact of marijuana on the immune system must be considered. The immune systems has specific cannabinoid receptors (CB2) that are distinguishable from the neurological variety (CB1). Stimulation of the CB2 receptor plays an important role in what is known as "immune deviation". The immune system can typically respond in either of two general patterns known as a th1 or a th2 cytokine response. Cannabinoids cause the immune system to deviate to a th2, anti-inflammatory response. In contrast, tobacco smoke has opposite pharmacological properties and results in a pro-inflammatory response. The pro-inflammatory response is characterized by free radical production which will exacerbate any carcinogens in the smoke. Pro-inflammatory response amplifies tobacco's carcinogenic potential whereas marijuana's anti-inflammatory response intrinsically reduces the carcinogenic potential of smoking. Consistent with epidemiological studies which do not bear out cannabis carcinogenesis, tobacco causes lung cancer whereas marijuana does not.In the middle of the last century, cannabis was commonly compared to alcohol; indeed--you heard it's action described in December as an "anesthetic--like being drunk." The claim was made then that cannabis has no real efficacy in the management of pain whatsoever. But a simple review of the literature shows this is not true at all.Mammalian tissues contain at least two types of cannabinoid receptor, CB1 and CB2, both coupled to G proteins. CB1 receptors are expressed mainly by neurones of the central and peripheral nervous system whereas CB2 receptors occur centrally and peripherally in certain non-neuronal tissues, particularly in immune cells. The existence of endogenous neurotransmitters for cannabinoid receptors has also been demonstrated. CB1 receptors are involved in nociceptive pain and both CB1 and CB2 receptors are involved in inflammatory hypersensitivity. Furthermore, cannabinoids produce analgesia by modulating rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) neuronal activity in a manner similar to, but pharmacologically dissociable from, that of morphine. They also show that endogenous cannabinoids tonically regulate pain thresholds in part through the modulation of RVM neuronal activity. These results show that analgesia produced by cannabinoids and opioids involves similar brainstem circuitry and that cannabinoids are indeed centrally acting analgesics with a new mechanism of action. Furthermore contralateral thalamic cannabinoid CB receptors are upregulated after unilateral axotomy of the tibial branch of the sciatic nerve, a rat model of chronic neuropathic pain, implying that cannabinoid CB receptor 1 upregulation contributes to the increased analgesic efficacy of cannabinoids in chronic pain conditions. These findings suggest that marijuana-induced antinociception is mediated through a CB1-receptor mechanism of action and are consistent with the notion that 9-THC is mainly responsible for this effect. These results also strongly suggest that the cannabinoid CB receptor is expressed presynaptically and that the activation of these receptors by synthetic cannabinoid CB receptor agonists or low concentration of anandamide results in inhibition of transmitter release from nociceptive primary sensory neurons. High concentrations of anandamide, on the other hand, increase the frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents recorded from substantia gelatinosa neurons. The possibility that antinociception can be mediated by cannabinoid receptors other than CB1 and CB2 receptors, for example CB2-like receptors, is also discussed as is the evidence firstly that one endogenous cannabinoid, anandamide, produces antinociception through mechanisms that differ from those of other types of cannabinoid, for example by acting on vanilloid receptors, and secondly that the endocannabinoid system has physiological and/or pathophysiological roles in the modulation of pain.*The relevance to these hearings of an effective means of pain management that is anti-inflammatory, and not pro-inflammatory, is that many auto-immune conditions currently being treated with opiates, like M.S. or arthritis, respond so much better to cannabis because the last thing these patients need is something that masks the pain while making their auto-immune inflammatory response worse! But the physician partisans of opiates, as you heard in December, are rather hostile to the input of individual patients, and prefer to focus on the putative negative impact of medical marijuana on public health. Gabriel Nahas has even opined that "so-called medical marijuana patients" are really candidates for methadone maintenance.Considered from the public health standpoint, cannabis is more often than not a replacement for alcohol and other drugs. When cannabis use goes up, alcohol use goes down. And because the cannabis effect is NOT incapacitating like alcohol intoxication (every single study to date shows no significant impairment of driving, for instance) the effect of the substitution of cannabis is the save lives. Economists Frank Chaloupka and Adit Laixuthai, at the University of Illinois at Chicago, estimate that cannabis decriminalization would reduce youth traffic fatalities by 5.5 per cent, youth drinking rates by eight per cent and binge-drinking rates by five per cent. Other evidence suggests we would see similar declines in emergency-room drug and alcohol cases. Now since any state medical marijuana measure enacted under George Bush is DOA, and since I notice that Chairman Lentol is sponsoring a companion piece of legislation which toughens penalties for repeat sale, perhaps it is time to consider that simply relaxing the laws on possession and distribution that are now on the books would have more practical benefits for medical patients, especially persons living with AIDS in New York City.Consider that 25% of all misdemeanor cases in New York on an average day are for simple possession of small amounts of marijuana. 90% of these are youths or Black and Latino inner city residents.** A review of the AIDS statistics reveals that these neighborhoods have rates of 846 to 3354 of HIV infection per hundred thousand. But since narcotic enforcement tends to focus on the same, familiar population of drug users, the percentage of people with AIDS or hepatitis C who are locked up and kept from complying with their regimen of medications is far higher than the 1 to 4 % these statistics suggest. Considering that it's almost impossible to go through Central Booking without being exposed to at least one homeless person with drug-resistant tuberculosis, no system could be devised which would more exacerbate the AIDS crisis. The answer is to bite the bullet, do what Great Britain is doing, and sanction casual marijuana possession with a verbal warning and confiscation. No ticket, no jail time, no fingerprinting on the remote chance that out of thousands detained, you'll catch one actual criminal. The second problem is that unlike methadone, there is no provision under your contemplated legislation for access to cannabis for people who don't have a life-threatening condition but--like the methadone client--can't or won't quit using. Since methadone is arguably the more toxic substance, the only explanation is that the state intends that people be strung out on harder, more addictive drugs: opiates, alcohol and tobacco. This makes no sense, and the solution is to change the law to punish--not repeat sale--but the use of the market in cannabis to introduce neophytes to harder drugs. The stiffer penalties would come into play wherever cannabis was found commingled with cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, etc. Over time, the public health benefits of this approach are enormous, as we may see from the several decade experience of the Netherlands.According to Dutch government factsheets, for instance, out of the total population of 727,000, Amsterdam has around 5,100 hard-drug users. The primary thrust of policy is to discourage the use of drugs, and to combat the trade in drugs. The authorities also seek to minimise the risks incurred by drug users and to reduce as far as possible the nuisance factor for the general public. In the context of use, Amsterdam's drug policy differentiates between hard and soft drugs, i.e.: cannabis is available, but at locations where no other illicit substances may be sold, and this "market separation" is strictly enforced. Of some 5,100 hard-drug users, around 2000 are of Dutch origin, with some 1,350 having roots in former colony of Surinam, the Netherlands Antilles and Morocco. Around 1,750 users come from other European countries, mainly Germany and Italy. The total number of hard-drug users is steadily decreasing, while their average age is rising, from 26.8 years in 1981 to 39 years in 1999. In the same period the total number of drug users under 22 years of age dropped from 14.4 percent to 1.6%.In terms of the AIDS crisis, there is no question that cannabis consumption is not implicated in the spread of the virus, whereas the U.S. failure to get a handle on its needle-drug problem has supplied the vector for almost half of all HIV infections in New York City. For that reason, instead of trying to carve out an exception to the system for the severely ill and dying [which exception recalcitrant narcs will no doubt flout with help of the Feds anyway], you should CHANGE THE SYSTEM to protect the public health--removing the threat of arrest for very sick in the process.___________________________________________________________________* CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors are implicated in inflammatory pain N. The ED50 for the antinociceptive (increasing mechanical withdrawal threshold) effect was 0.1 mg/kg 2 1 i.p., and for anti-hypersensitivity and anti-inflammatory activity was 5 mg/kg 2 1 i.p. (in the carrageenan model). The selective CB1 antagonist, AM281 (0.5 mg/kg 2 1 i.p.) reversed effects of HU210 (10 and 30 mg/kg 2 1 i.p.) in both nociceptive and inflammatory models of hypersensitivity. The selective CB2 antagonist, SR144528 (1 mg/kg 2 1 i.p.) antagonised effects of HU210 (30 mg/kg 2 1 i.p.) in the carrageenan induced inflammatory hypersensitivity. The CB2 agonist, 1-(3-Dichlorobenzoyl)-5-methoxy-2-methyl-(2-(morpholin-4-yl)ethyl 2 1H-indole (GW405833) inhibited the hypersensitivity and was anti-inflammatory in vivo. These effects were blocked by SR144528. These findings suggest that CB1 receptors are involved in nociceptive pain and that both CB1 and CB2 receptors are involved in inflammatory hypersensitivity. Future studies will investigate effects on identified inflammatory cells within the inflamed tissue to further elucidate the role of cannabinoid receptors.2001 Elsevier Science Inc. Rapid communicationCannabinoid CB receptor upregulation in a rat model of chronic 1 neuropathic pain

CNS Research, Bayer AG, Aprather Weg 18a, D-42096, Wuppertal, GermanyReceived in revised form 24 January 2001; accepted 26 January 2001AbstractAlthough cannabinoids are known to be more effective analgesics against chronic rather than acute pain, the mechanism underlying this phenomenon is still unclear. We report now that contralateral thalamic cannabinoid CB receptors are upregulated after unilateral 1 axotomy of the tibial branch of the sciatic nerve, a rat model of chronic neuropathic pain, and hypothesize that cannabinoid CB receptor 1 upregulation contributes to the increased analgesic efficacy of cannabinoids in chronic pain conditions. q2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Received 2 August 1999; accepted 21 April 2000AbstractAlthough the majority of cannabinoid users smoke marijuana, the preponderance of laboratory animal research is based on administration of 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (9-THC) or other cannabinoid agents via injection. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of inhaling marijuana, or ethanol-extracted placebo smoke in the mouse model of cannabinoid activity by assessing inhibition of spontaneous activity, antinociception, catalepsy, and body temperature. In order to determine dosimetry, blood levels of 9-THC were obtained following either marijuana exposure or intravenous injection of 9-THC. Inhalation exposure to marijuana produced dose-related increases in antinociception and catalepsy, with estimated ED50 doses of 9-THC of 2.4 and 3.8 mg/kg, respectively. However, hypothermia and locomotor depression occurred in both the placebo- and marijuana- exposed mice. The CB1 receptor antagonist, SR 141716A antagonized the antinociceptive effects of marijuana(AD50=0.6 mg/kg), but only slightly decreased marijuana-induced catalepsy, and failed to alter either the hypothermic or locomotor depressive effects. In contrast, SR 141716A antagonized the antinociceptive, cataleptic, and hypothermic effects of intravenously administered 9-THC in mice that were exposed to air alone, though all subjects exhibited locomotor depression, possibly related to the restraint. In accordance with reports of others, these data suggest that exposure to smoke alone has pharmacological consequences. Our findings also indicate that marijuana-induced antinociception is mediated through a CB1-receptor mechanism of action and are consistent with the notion that 9-THC is mainly responsible for this effect. © 2001

ReviewPossible mechanisms of cannabinoid-induced antinociception in the spinal cord

Accepted 27 July 2001AbstractAnandamide is an endogenous ligand at both the inhibitory cannabinoid CB receptor and the excitatory vanilloid receptor 1 VR1 . The CB receptor and vanilloid VR1 receptor are expressed in about 50% and 40% of dorsal root ganglion neurons, respectively. While all vanilloid VR1 receptor-expressing cells belong to the calcitonin gene-related peptide-containing and isolectin B4-binding sub-populations of nociceptive primary sensory neurons, about 80% of the cannabinoid CB receptor-expressing cells belong to those sub-populations. Furthermore, all vanilloid VR1 receptor-expressing cells co-express the cannabinoid CB receptor. In agreement with these findings, neonatal capsaicin treatment that induces degeneration of capsaicin-sensitive, vanilloid VR1 receptor-expressing, thin, unmyelinated, nociceptive primary afferent fibres significantly reduced the cannabinoid CB receptor immunostaining in the superficial spinal dorsal horn. Synthetic cannabinoid CB receptor agonists, which do not have affinity at the vanilloid VR1 receptor, and low concentrations of anandamide both reduce the frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents and electrical stimulation-evoked orcapsaicin-induced excitatory postsynaptic currents in substantia gelatinosa cells in the spinal cord without any effect on their amplitude. These effects are blocked by selective cannabinoid CB receptor antagonists. Furthermore, the paired-pulse ratio is increased while the postsynaptic response of substantia gelatinosa neurons induced by a-amino-3-hydroxy- 5-methylisoxasole-propionic acid AMPA in the presence of tetrodotoxin is unchanged following cannabinoid CB receptor activation. These results strongly suggest that the cannabinoid CB receptor is expressed presynaptically and that the activation of these receptors by synthetic cannabinoid CB receptor agonists or low concentration of anandamide results in inhibition of transmitter release from nociceptive primary sensory neurons. High concentrations of anandamide, on the other hand, increase the frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents recorded from substantia gelatinosa neurons. This increase is blocked by ruthenium red, suggesting that this effect is mediated through the vanilloid VR1 receptor. Thus, anandamide at high concentrations can activate the VR1 and produce an opposite, excitatory effect to its inhibitory action produced at low concentrations through cannabinoid CB receptor activation. This dual, concentration-dependent effect of anandamide could be animportant presynaptic modulatory mechanism in the spinal nociceptive system. q2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Cannabinoid receptors and pain
Roger G. Pertwee *
Department of Biomedical Sciences, Institute of Medical Sciences, Uni6ersity of Aberdeen, Foresterhill, Aberdeen AB 25 2ZD, Scotland, UKReceived 9 February 2000AbstractMammalian tissues contain at least two types of cannabinoid receptor, CB1 and CB2, both coupled to G proteins. CB1 receptors are expressed mainly by neurones of the central and peripheral nervous system whereas CB2 receptors occur centrally and peripherally in certain non-neuronal tissues, particularly in immune cells. The existence of endogenous ligands for cannabinoid receptors has also been demonstrated. The discovery of this 'endocannabinoid system' has prompted the development of a range of novel cannabinoid receptor agonists and antagonists, including several that show marked selectivity for CB1 or CB2 receptors. It has also been paralleled by a renewed interest in cannabinoid-induced antinociception. This review summarizes current knowledge about the ability of cannabinoids to produce antinociception in animal models of acute pain as well as about the ability of these drugs to suppress signs of tonic pain induced in animals by nerve damage or by the injection of an inflammatory agent.Particular attention is paid to the types of pain against which cannabinoids may be effective, the distribution pattern of cannabinoid receptors in central and peripheral pain pathways and the part that these receptors play in cannabinoid-induced antinociception. The possibility that antinociception can be mediated by cannabinoid receptors other than CB1 and CB2 receptors, for example CB2-like receptors, is also discussed as is the evidence firstly that one endogenous cannabinoid, anandamide, produces antinociception through mechanisms that differ from those of other types of cannabinoid, for example by acting on vanilloid receptors, and secondly that the endocannabinoid system has physiological and:or pathophysiological roles in the modulation of pain.© 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. SUFFERERS PLEAD FOR MEDICAL POT
ALBANY o Bruce Dunn of Otsego County has lived in chronic pain since nearly
being crushed in a car accident more than 14 years ago.
The spinal cord injury he suffered left the nerves in his neck damaged
severely. The muscles in his upper back, meanwhile, have deteriorated to
the point where you can see bone through his shirt when he turns around.
And often, he hurts so bad that he finds it hard to sit more than 10
minutes at a time.
Since his 1988 crash, Dunn has tried an array of powerful prescribed
medications to relieve his pain. Some drugs simply didn't work. Others left
him sick.
Finally, he turned to marijuana.
"I'm not sure how it works, or why," Dunn said.URL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03.n112.a11.html------------------------------

STUDENT INITIATIVE PUTS SOFTER MARIJUANA PENALTIES BEFORE COLUMBIA VOTERS
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- Taking aim at hippie stereotypes, backers of a local
ballot issue that would soften penalties in marijuana cases are crafting
campaign arguments that cross and blur demographic lines.
They believe the approach -- simultaneous appeals to the seriously ill,
senior citizens, college students and baby boomers who sneak joints on
weekends -- will propel Proposition 1 into this university town's law books
on April 8.
"This isn't just about potheads," says University of Missouri law student
Anthony Lee Johnson, the proposal's author. "We think this is a winning

POT RX DOC LOSES DEA RECOGNITION
Marion Fry, MD, can no longer help patients obtain medical marijuana and
might be out of business completely after the Drug Enforcement
Administration recently revoked her privileges.
Fry, 42, and husband Dale Schafer, an attorney, run the California Medical
Research Center in Cool, founded to foster medical marijuana research. Fry
wrote recommendations for medical marijuana and Schafer advised clients of
the legal aspects of medical marijuana.
Proposition 215, the Compassionate Use Act, allows patients to use
marijuana with a recommendation from a doctor.
Last year the DEA investigated Fry for writing recommendations under
"questionable circumstances" and issued an order to show cause -- Fry's
opportunity to explain in court why her privileges should not be revoked.URL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03.n111.a07.html------------------------------

POTSHOTTING A POTHEAD
Cheap Weed For The Masses!:
WTF is up with SF Weekly and medical pot [Dog Bites, Jan. 8]? "High Quality"
was one of the worst examples of yellow journalism you've spewed, and you've
spewed a lot.
The main problem with Proposition S is that it is just talk. Because federal
oppression remains unchallenged by local and state officials, patients must
pay prices that are far too high due to artificial scarcity (one reason thatbusiness may not be "brisk" at Mission Street Caregivers is that several
clubs have lower prices and a wide selection as well). All of the clubs,
however, must get their supplies from the same vendors who sell to the
"recreational" market, such as your anonymous writer "Morbidund Orbidund"
(it should be pointed out that the poorest patients do resell pot, because
they simply have no other way to obtain medication), and this means that the
prices are far too high for the most impoverished, and most needy, patients.
So if you are not wealthy or "connected," you have no de facto access to
medication.URL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03.n120.a09.html------------------------------
DOCTORS WANT BETTER MARIJUANA FOR STUDY
SAN MATEO -- Nearly two years after its launch here, doctors conducting a
groundbreaking medical marijuana study want better quality weed from the
federal government.
The study leaders also want to allow more sick people to participate, but
are stymied by stringent eligibility requirements.
"The study continues but it is going slowly for a variety of factors," saidDr. Dennis Israelski, director of medical research in San Mateo County and
chief of staff at San Mateo Medical Center.
The County has waited at least six months for a response from federal
agencies, officials said.
The 3-year County study seeks to discover whether marijuana "cigarettes"
can be safely dispensed to HIV-AIDS and cancer patients to treat symptoms
and side effects of disease treatment.
However, some believe the apparently low-grade marijuana used in the
program -- grown at the University of Mississippi by the federal government
- -- has discouraged participants who can treat themselves with the drug
through other channels.
And stringent physical requirements on often terminally ill patients have
also slowed membership in the study.
The first HIV-AIDS participant, Phillip Alden, who dropped out of the study
when he came down with bronchitis, said he would re-join if the marijuana
were of better quality.
"I certainly hope they get better quality pot," Alden said. "If they wanted
me to re-enter the study, I would. I would love to see the study succeed."
Alden also said he objected to the cigarette papers that the marijuana was
rolled in, believing they contained toxins.
San Mateo County Supervisor Mike Nevin, a former San Francisco police
inspector, had waged a campaign since 1997 to bring about the County's
medical marijuana study. It was launched in April 2001 at the County'smedical center.
"This is not a cannabis club we're talking about. It's a very tight,
closed, secure program," Nevin said.
When the County got initial state and federal approvals in 2001 --
including approvals from federal law enforcement agencies under the Clinton
administration -- it was considered groundbreaking.
County officials hoped the study would not only provide relief to patients,
but would begin to bridge the gap between Proposition 215, the successful
1996 state ballot measure that allowed medical marijuana, and existing laws
that criminalize the drug.
"They need to supply us with something more meaningful for our trials,"
Nevin said. "We're losing patients."
Nevin frequently refers to personal testimony of the late Joni Commons --
the County's deputy director of health services -- as his inspiration for
the medical marijuana study. Commons struggled with breast cancer and said
she found relief from treatment only through the use of marijuana,
according to those who knew her.
Israelski -- medical director of the study -- also sees a need for a
non-smokable form of marijuana for pain relief from chronic disease.
"The County is well-positioned to lead in this effort because of the
enlightened leadership here and the environment of dynamic change at SanMateo Medical Center," Israelski said.-------------------------Date: Sat, 25 Jan 2003 08:46:53 -0800

Government's Attempt to Silence Activist in Medical Marijuana Trial Fails
Court Hears Testimony on How Rosenthal Helped Patients Live Better Lives
Thursday, January 23, 2003 -- The U.S. government's attempt to silence
marijuana-cultivation expert and author Ed Rosenthal, as well as hisattorneys, was thwarted today in federal court, but those assembled to hear
the outcome of the latest twist in what was already a Kafkaesque legal saga
had to wait to the end of the day for the judge's decision.
Fear of pervasive media reports on the trial "contaminating the jury" had
yesterday prompted Assistant U.S. Attorney George Bevan, Jr. to ask the
judge to put a stop to all press interviews until the conclusion of Mr.
Rosenthal's federal trial. U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer responded
yesterday by asking Mr. Rosenthal to agree not to speak to the press, with
the added threat that -- in the event of a conviction -- he would take Mr.
Rosenthal's conduct during the trial into account in considering the wide
range of sentencing options available - 10 years to life in prison, and up
to $6,500,000 in fines.
But with an attorney from the San Francisco Chronicle and a media-law
expert from the First Amendment Project present in court to argue thematter today, Judge Breyer rejected the requested order, saying that the
media attention was part of a "legitimate public controversy" and that the
government had not made a sufficient showing that the jury was being
influenced.
But that came at the end of the day, after court had recessed.
Today's proceedings, which saw eight witnesses called, began with Judge
Breyer directing the prosecution to play for the jury several minutes of
videotape from the raid on Mr. Rosenthal's Oakland cultivation facility. The video depicted DEA agents holding up small marijuana cuttings, or
clones, to demonstrate which of them had begun to show roots. The number
with roots is of grave importance, because only cuttings with visible root
structures can be counted as plants, and federal marijuana sentences are
based on the number of plants, regardless of size. The vast majority of the
marijuana plants seized in the raid were clones or cuttings a few inches
tall, and only a small fraction of them had roots, even by DEA accounts.
The defense is disputing the number of rooted plants the government can
prove were present.
Special Agent Charles Taylor of the DEA was called to the stand to testify
about the plants he had helped count during the raid. One counting sheet
bearing his initials showed a number crossed out and a different one
entered, just as had a counting sheet seen yesterday during another agent's
testimony. Agent Taylor stated under cross-examination that he had no idea
why several large garbage bags filled with marijuana clippings had been
left behind after the raid, since it was DEA policy to seize all such
contraband.
Next up was Lesley Wilmer, the 74-year-old former landlord of the Oakland
building that housed the cultivation facility. A retired MUNI bus driver,
Mr. Wilmer testified that after initially leasing the site, Mr. Rosenthal
had bought the building, with financing help from Mr. Wilmer. Defense
attorney Robert Eye asked Mr. Wilmer if Mr. Rosenthal had told him that he
was growing marijuana there under the authority of the city of Oakland, but
- -- as with all such questions during this trial -- a prosecution objection
sustained by the judge stopped him from answering.
IRS Special Agent Anita Dobberstein then climbed into the witness stand to
briefly testify about two checks she had recovered from the Rosenthal home.
Made out to Ed Rosenthal from the Harm Reduction Center and signed by
Robert Martin, the checks had been returned for insufficient funds. Agent
Dobberstein said she had neither written a report about the seizure of the
checks nor done any investigation into the circumstances that lead to their
being written.
The next witness called was a firefighter/paramedic for the Oakland Fire
Department, "German" Sierra, who had filled out an initial fire-safety
inspection report on Mr. Rosenthal's cultivation facility. He testified
that he had been shown a valid City of Oakland business license, and that
Mr. Rosenthal had, after explaining that the marijuana was for distribution
to the local medical clubs, shown the fire department inspectors through
the building. Mr. Sierra said that at no time had Mr. Rosenthal attemptedto hide anything or prevent them from inspecting any part of the building.
He also said that neither he nor the other Oakland firefighters present had
either commented on the marijuana growing in the building or reported it to
any law enforcement officials. The inspection report showed that Mr.
Rosenthal had brought the building up to code.
Another IRS Special Agent, John Wilson Baker III then came to the stand to
tell the jury about a surveillance he had carried out with a DEA agent in
which they had observed Mr. Rosenthal leave his Oakland building with a
white grocery bag and drive to the Sixth Street Harm Reduction Center in
San Francisco, which he entered, carrying the bag. The agent couldn't say
if he'd left with the bag, nor could he say what the purpose of the
surveillance was. He did say that Mr. Rosenthal made no attempt to hide
either the bag or where he was going.
Robert W. Martin was then compelled to testify. One of several witnessessubpoenaed by the prosecution and forced to testify under a grant of
immunity to keep them from asserting their fifth-amendment rights against
self-incrimination, Mr. Martin described for the jury the circumstances
surrounding the checks he had written Mr. Rosenthal (which had been seized
in the raid of the Rosenthal home), the number of times he'd seen him at
the Harm Reduction Center, and conversations he'd had with others at theHRC about Mr. Rosenthal's involvement with providing medicine for the
patients. In answer to a question from the judge, Mr. Martin explained that
he sold Mr. Rosenthal's clones to patients for $10 so they could "grow
their own medicine and make their life better."
Another grant of immunity was then issued to force the testimony of James
Joseph Kyne, who had been living on property in Petaluma belonging to Ken
Hayes and working as a volunteer at the Harm Reduction Center at the time
of the raids. Mr. Kyne was put on the stand in an attempt to identify a
particular phone number as belonging to Mr. Hayes, the proprietor of the
HRC, but the best he could do was say he'd seen a piece of paper with Mr.
Hayes name and a phone number on it, which the DEA had seized in raiding
Mr. Hayes' home. He described his volunteer work at the HRC as counseling
patients, helping them find housing, and the like.
Last on the stand was John Brian Padgett, the DEA Special Agent in charge
of the search at the Harm Reduction Center. But he'd barely gotten started
on testifying about the marijuana plants he'd found in the basement of the
HRC when the court day ended. He's scheduled to return to the stand when
trial resumes at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29.
The prosecution estimated that they have an hour and a half left in
presenting their case. The defense told the court they will present its
opening argument at that time and expect to call at least a day's worth of
witnesses. Judge Breyer then instructed defense counsel not to try and call
such witnesses as Barbara Parker, the assistant city attorney for Oakland;
Nate Miley, a former Oakland City Councilman; Lt. Richard Hart, the head of
the Oakland Police Narcotics unit; or anyone else who might testify -- as
they all did during pretrial hearings -- about the City of Oakland's
medical marijuana program, for which Mr. Rosenthal had been deputized tocultivate.--------

MARIJUANA MAY HAVE MOTIVATED ASSAULT ON DISABLED MAN
The young men under investigation in connection with the beating of a
disabled Port Hadlock man may have been trying to get his medical
marijuana, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says.
The victim, 45, who was beaten as he sat in his wheelchair, remained in
serious condition yesterday at Harborview Medical Center. He apparently
suffered a blow to the back of the head from a baseball bat.
Jefferson County investigators are uncertain what role three Chimacum High
School students played in the attack, but deputies seized their car, whichwas seen leaving the disabled man's apartment complex.
A 20-year-old man who was with the students is suspected of the attack and
was booked into the Jefferson County Jail under investigation of assaultand burglar*************************BUSHWHACKED!!**************************US Lawyers Warn Bush On War Crimes
By Grant McCool
1-24-3
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A group of U.S. law professors opposed to a possible war on Iraq warned U.S. President George W. Bush on Friday that he and senior government officials could be prosecuted for war crimes if military tactics violated international humanitarian law.
"Our primary concern ... is the large number of civilian casualties that may result should U.S. and coalition forces fail to comply with international humanitarian law in using force against Iraq," the group, led by the New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights, said in a letter to Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
The group cited the particular need for U.S. and coalition forces to abide by humanitarian law requiring warring parties to distinguish between military and civilian areas, use only the level of force that is militarily necessary and to use weaponry that is proportionate to what is being targeted.
The letter, which had more than 100 signatories, said the rules had been broken in other recent wars.
It said air strikes on populated cities, carpet bombing and the use of fuel-air explosives were examples of inappropriate military action taken during the 1991 Gulf War, the 1999 Kosovo campaign and the 2001 Afghan conflict that led to civilian casualties and might be used again in Iraq.
The letter to Bush and Rumsfeld coincided with similar notes sent this week to British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien by lawyers in those countries.
Ironically, Bush on Wednesday advised Iraqi officers and soldiers to disobey any orders to use weapons of mass destruction in the event of a conflict. "If you choose to do so, when Iraq is liberated, you will be treated, tried and persecuted as a war criminal," he said.
On Sunday, Rumsfeld said he would favor granting Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and senior Iraqi leaders immunity from possible war crimes prosecution if it would clear the way for their exile and avoid a war.
INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT
Government officials in Britain and Canada could theoretically be investigated by the new International Criminal Court in The Hague if it was determined that international laws had been broken in war. The United States has refused to cooperate with the court and has withdrawn its signature from the treaty establishing it.
The letter to Blair, dated Jan. 22, from Public Interest Lawyers said that if Britain's actions in Iraq were deemed possible war crimes, "we, and others, will take steps to ensure that you, and other leaders of the U.K. government are held accountable."
The Canadian group, Lawyers Against the War, said in its letter dated Jan. 20, that it was putting Chretien's government on notice that without explicit U.N. Security Council approval for a war on Iraq, "we will pursue all responsible government officials on charges of murder and crimes against humanity in both the Canadian and the international criminal courts."
One of the leading signatories to the letter to Bush said although Washington was not a party to the ICC, U.S. officials could still be prosecuted under the Geneva Convention.
"War crimes under that convention can be prosecuted wherever the perpetrators are found," said Michael Ratner, president of the Center for Constitutional Rights.----------------------------Delivered-To: dana@...

Subject: Fwd: The 10 Most Startling Speculations and "Conspiracy
Theories" About September 11 and America's New WarStatus:
Note from MN:
It's odd to me what's included and what's left out of this survey. The piece says, "Meanwhile, four hijacked jumbo jets were able to fly off-course across several states without encountering any opposition from the most powerful and responsive air force in the world." Yet there is no further discussion about this. It's odd to me that this piece doesn't mention either the simplest or the farthest out theory regarding 9-11, both of which deal with this leading point. The simple one, put out particularly by Jared Israel at The Emperor's New Clothes, is that the military and civilian aeronautics agencies were basically ordered to stand down in contravention of existing well-codified procedures in the event of hijackings or pilot death. The wilder out ones range from the idea that the planes were hijacked by electronic remote control to the assertion that it was not planes that crashed into the buildings (despite eyewitnesses and videotape to the contrary) but missiles/UFOs/Warren Buffet's executive jets (or alternatively that in additionto/instead of exploding airplanes it was internally placed explosives.
There was a roman a clef about the Kennedy assassination (fictionalized with other names), I think "Winter Kills," that theorized a) Joseph Kennedy was behind it (I forget why) and b) all the conspiracy theories and trails of false evidence were specifically designed to make it impossible for any serious investigation to take place, and to make everyone throw up their hands about learning the truth. I'm sure that's part of what's going on now, particularly with the nonsense about it being something other than the hijacked planes that crashed into the WTC and Pentagon. Now you can call that a conspiracy theory, but I have no doubt that there are planted stories and constructed theories and perhaps theorists designed to make any alternative theory appear wacko.--MN
Of Big Oil, By Big Oil, For Big Oil
The 10 Most Startling Speculations and "Conspiracy Theories" About September 11 and America's New War
[27 December 2002]
Mike Ward / PopMatters Film Critic
http://www.popmatters.com/features/021227-conspiracy.shtml
For about thirty minutes after his chief of staff told him that America was under attack, George W. Bush continued to sit in an elementary school classroom listening to a second-grader tell a story about a pet goat. He did a marvelous job of looking completely unsurprised. Meanwhile, four hijacked jumbo jets were able to fly off-course across several states without encountering any opposition from the most powerful and responsive air force in the world.
Less than a month later, on the pretext of pursuing terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden, the Bush administration began what it called a "war" on the impoverished and already war-torn country of Afghanistan. It turns out this assault had been in the works well before September 11 took place.
Soon after replacing the Taliban government with one more to its liking (and, in what is surely a coincidence, resuscitating the world's most bountiful opium fields), the administration began agitating for a similar, but even more destructive, bombardment of the oil-rich nation of Iraq. This, although Osama bin Laden was still at large and no link between him and Saddam Hussein could be established.
For these reasons and hundreds of others, the year following September 11 has seen probably the most staggering proliferation of "conspiracy theories" in American history. Angry speculation -- focused mainly on government dirty dealings, ulterior motives, and potential complicity in the attacks -- has risen to a clamor that easily rivals what followed the Kennedy assassination. Some of these suppositions are patent balderdash. But many others are coherent and well argued, and cite disconcerting reports from the U.S. corporate media and respected overseas news desks to support their claims. Providing grist for the mill are such odd episodes as last year's partisan anthrax poisonings (using U.S. army microbes) and the sniper attacks that recently plagued Washington, DC.
Following are the ten most alarming theories about September 11, the "war on terror," and the future of the world. Feel free to accept them as gospel, study them as symptoms of a traumatized culture, or scoff at them as anti-American propaganda: I'm only the messenger. Personally, though, at this point the only person I hold above suspicion in the matter of September 11 is that poor kid with the goat.
1. Great Game in the Caspian Sea.
Among the theories about the administration's real reasons for bombing and occupying Afghanistan, the one with the most traction argues that Afghanistan provides the best real estate for an oil and natural gas pipeline. Believers say that fossil fuels in the Caspian Sea, once part of the Soviet empire, are now up for grabs in a fierce contest between Russia and the West. To the winner will go control of much of the energy supply for East Asia. Sources cited in support of this idea -- which has gotten ink in England's Guardian newspaper and the BBC, as well as offhand mention on U.S. Sunday talk shows -- include Zbigniew Brzezinski's apology for empire, The Grand Chessboard, and a 1998 Taliban-damning report to Congress from the oil company Unocal. But the most telling evidence of all: now that Afghanistan is a satellite state of the Bush administration, the pipeline is actually being built!.
2. The Afghanistan/Enron Connection.
Rumor has it that in the months before Enron's collapse, Bush, Cheney, and the much-gossiped-about "energy task force" convened daily, high-priority meetings to try and engineer a bailout for Bush's most generous campaign contributor. At the peak of the Enron scandal and in the aftermath of the attack on Afghanistan, a fascinating document surfaced in conspiracy circles that told of a bank-breaking Enron venture: a power plant the firm had partly built in India. Plagued with cost overruns and accusations of employee mistreatment that led to violent labor disputes, the power plant became a cash sinkhole that threatened to send Enron into insolvency -- unless the plant could tap into a pipeline network to be spun off from the Caspian Sea venture and recover some of its losses by operating on natural gas. A detailed and intriguing read, this document explains why Dick Cheney would sooner chug a quart of 10W-40 than surrender the minutes of those energy meetings.
3. The Magic Passport Theory.
We can now add Mohamed Atta's reality-defying passport to the Arlen Specter Gallery of Improbable Projectiles. This incriminating item was thrown intact from a cataclysmic fireball and miraculously plucked from 1.6 million tons of debris in a matter of hours. The corporate media rarely mention the unlikelihood of this. Many in the alternative press, though, are unafraid to draw an obvious, albeit taboo, inference: that the Atta passport is planted evidence. According to Washington, DC, peace activist John Judge, other potential plants include the Arabic-language flight manuals left in one of the hijackers' cars (with note: The discussion of the flight manuals begins at around 13:30). These manuals could serve no useful purpose at such a late stage unless the hijackers planned to finish learning how to fly during a half-hour ride to the airport. But as deliberately placed articles, they are as if a signed diary called "My Plan to Kill the President" had been unea rthed in Lee Harvey Oswald's flat. Also high on the possible planted evidence list is a spiritual manifesto for the Al Qaeda kamikaze pilots, which, to journalist Robert Fisk, sounds an awful lot like it was written by a God-fearing Christian.
4. Hijacker Oddities I.
Little-observed in the fine print of the FBI rap sheet on the September 11 hijackers was a clumsily phrased disclaimer admitting that the Bureau's document wasn't, ahem, necessarily a final draft (with note: "It should be noted that attempts to confirm the true identities of these individuals are still under way").
Ringleader Mohamed Atta's identity was a slam-dunk, of course, owing to the propitious recovery of his passport. But bear in mind how quickly the FBI conjured its 19 Enemies of the State while you ponder the strange case of Waleed Al Shehri. In an article for the BBC, this Saudi Arabian national says that he turned up on the FBI list and feels that rumors of his death were greatly exaggerated. Not to be outdone, the British Daily Telegraph also ran an article on the subject, claiming to have found no fewer than four of the supposed September 11 attackers -- alive, well, and hopping mad. Pending long overdue clarification from John Ashcroft's vaunted Bureau, one can hardly blame the conspiracy-minded for crying "patsy."
5. Hijacker Oddities II.
Another theory about the hijackers' real identities takes as its departure an utterly bizarre and largely overlooked story on MSNBC.com, which says that some of the hijackers may have trained at U.S. Army bases. Yes, you read that right. Strange as it may seem, providing terrorists-slash-"freedom fighters" with lethal skills is a tradition in certain specialized arms of the American military and U.S. intelligence. The infamous School of the Americas, for example, helped to train the death squads that claimed so many innocent lives in Central America. Even so, the idea that the government might aid Osama's minions is completely beyond the pale, right? Perhaps. But remember the CIA and the military's record-breaking aid program to the Afghan Mujahedin movement, as outlined, for example, in John Cooley's Unholy Wars. Questions about hijacker links to U.S. intelligence got more complicated when the spook watchdog magazine CovertAction Quarterly claimed that many of the hijackers got into the country using CIA "snitch" visas. (This article can be found in CovertAction Quarterly's Winter 2001, 41-44; the BBC conducted an interview with the author, Michael Springmann). As with many issues involving The Agency, this promises to be shrouded in mystery for a long time.
6. Insider Trades.
Remember right after the attacks when you couldn't watch TV for five minutes without hearing somebody say "put option"? The 9/11 insider stock trades got endless airplay on the major networks before Osama bin Laden became fixed in the popular imagination, whereupon the media bent themselves to the task of establishing his guilt. Still, even if Al Qaeda placed the 4,744 suspicious transactions, wouldn't the story still be useful, if only to further illuminate the terrorist network's money machine? Apparently not, because the story didn't just fade away over time; it suddenly vanished. Once in a while, a TV news anchorperson would assure us there had been "nothing to" the rumors while failing to explain, if this was true, where the story had come from or why it had gotten so such attention.
But conservative scandal-tracker Tom Flocco didn't give up on the hinky stock trades. In a series of articles, he follows the money back to a bigwig in the financial firm Deutsche Bank, who also was once executive director of (surprise!) the CIA. Some might question Flocco's credibility as an investigative reporter, I suppose -- although credibility in the news business appears to be a dead letter anyway, if CNN could accidentally fabricate the 5,000 trades out of whole cloth to begin with.
7. The New World Order Will Not Be Televised.
Assuming you haven't stopped reading yet -- either to start digging a bomb shelter in your backyard or to flip on FOX News for a much-needed dose of pro-war soma -- you have to be wondering how these flabbergasting stories escaped the notice of America's intrepid newshounds. Examine this question for even a minute and you will stumble onto a proven, card-carrying evil conspiracy: it's called the U.S. Congress, and conclusive evidence links them to a truly terrifying document known as the Telecommunications Act of 1996.
This legislation is relevant post-9/11 because it allowed the megamergers of media conglomerates to become ultra-monstermergers. As a result, today a handful of multinationals control most of what is said in the U.S. about military actions overseas and the reasons for them. At least one of these companies -- General Electric -- has financial stakes in the weapons racket as well, but this blatant conflict of interest gets as much coverage as the Telecommunications Act originally got when it was on the floor of Congress: next to none. Some media observers and academics, like MIT's Noam Chomsky and Norman Solomon of Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, have doggedly pointed out that the bloated media emperor has no clothes. Too bad they stand little chance of appearing regularly on Face the Nation.
Not many people noticed when the rules governing what gets said about war and who gets to say it were exposed in Harper's Magazine, which ran a Florida News Herald memo outlining some of the carefully crafted talking points journalists must observe in discussing U.S. bombing campaigns. Among them: ignore or minimize innocent death. "If the story needs rewriting to play down the civilian casualties" caused by U.S. bombings, the Herald's copy desk decrees, "DO IT.... Failure to follow any of these or other standing rules could put your job in jeopardy" (1). Lesson? If you live in the U.S. and think you know what your government is doing to other countries and why, just because you watch cable or read a daily newspaper -- think again.
8. Iran/Contra Redux.
Near the end of 2002, a surprisingly lethargic debate was underway in the U.S. concerning the "war on terror"'s erosion of Americans' civil liberties -- which many felt were already pretty meager anyhow, having been picked clean during two decades of the "war on drugs." The debate took a turn toward the paranormal when the corporate media briefly went agog over the Bush administration's citizen-stalking Information Awareness Office. By the time it got mentioned in the Washington Post, though, the IAO was old news to flying saucer buffs: Art Bell rival Jeff Rense had already run several articles scrutinizing the IAO's logo, which -- with its all-seeing, Masonic pyramid-and-eyeball -- seems meant to agitate the growing ranks of the understandably paranoid.
It takes only a few clicks on the IAO's homepage to learn that the agency is presided over by Iran/Contra luminary John Poindexter, just one weapons-running Reagan-era alumnus to find an honored seat in Dubya's star chamber. Also plucked from political ignominy is Elliot Abrams, who has gone from pleading no-contest to charges of perjury before Congress to helping lead the Bush Administration's Mid-East policy. These are only two of the administration's many questionable appointments -- don't even get me started on Henry Kissinger -- but Iran/Contra is a matter of special note to conspiracy trackers. Take the late Mae Brussell, a minor legend to some for her reflections on the Kennedy murder. She once provided scathing alternative assessments of Iran/Contra for her underground radio show, "World Watchers". Like Tom Flocco, Mae Brussell should be taken with some healthy skepticism. Even so, the rage behind her accusations -- she links the Iran/Contra figures with wholesale drug dealing and the CIA with the Jonestown massacre -- is a predictable result when bloody official policies are conducted absent anything resembling consent of the governed.
9. The Reichstag Fire and Operation Northwoods.
Now things get really weird. To those who scoff at the idea that the government could have had foreknowledge of or complicity in the September 11 attacks, conspiracy researchers respond that attacks have been faked or manufactured plenty of times before, usually to maneuver the public into supporting a war they would otherwise oppose. The Nazi party, for instance, most likely set fire to the Reichstag building in order to pin the crime on the communists and galvanize the people behind their police-state tactics. They also forged a fake battle to justify their invasion of Poland (2). Sure, you say, but the Nazis were like that. Unfortunately, similar incidents pop up in the U.S.'s recent past, as well. Frequently mentioned examples include Pearl Harbor -- which many, such as Day of Deceit author Robert Stinnett, feel was allowed to happen to prompt America's entry into World War II -- and the weird Gulf of Tonkin incident.
Researchers discussing this issue often cite an interesting find: an internal Pentagon document from the early 1960s, which appears in James Bamford's book on military subterfuge, Body of Secrets, and puts the lie to the contention that the government would never manufacture incidents or attack its own people to lead the country to war. The Operation Northwoods memo is the result of a brainstorming session on ways to help sell military action in Cuba by fabricating or committing acts of violence and blaming them on Fidel Castro. Among its suggestions: shoot down a plane full of college students, sink an American ship ("casualty lists in U.S. newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national indignation"), or rig astronaut John Glenn's rocket to explode. The Northwoods memo invites us to rethink what some in the government might be capable of not only in terms of September 11 but also the Kennedy assassination. After all, if spectacular murders of people like Joh n Glenn are conceivable, is it so fantastic to plot the assassination of a sitting president?
10. Things to Come.
For many writers -- like www.rense.com's Diane Harvey -- the corruption of American empire is relevant, but only as a sidebar. The real problem stems from two incontrovertible facts: that reserves of oil and other non-renewable resources will someday run out, and that on its current course, the Earth is soon to become overloaded with people. If these twin problems go unaddressed, our species faces a gloomy fate. As the situation gets worse, governance in the traditional mode, based around at least the pretense of liberal democracy, will become impossible. Instead, naked power grabs will become the norm for wealthy elites capable of mounting them. "The people"'s job will be simply to provide money and labor for the war machines that make these imperial conquests possible; those who aspire to a role in their own governance beyond subsidizing imperial expansion will be brutally repressed.
Harvey and others feel that such a global transformation has already begun, and episodes like September 11 and the U.S. government's bizarre obsession with oil-laden Iraq are among its harbingers. But, you say, oil supplies look fine from where you sit. According to hard-on-the-eyes website, www.dieoff.org, the problem won't manifest itself all at once, when the world's oil wells suddenly dry up. It is instead happening incrementally, because the rate of production has started to lag behind the world's increasing demand. Among numerous cases in point, www.dieoff.org cites "The Coming Anarchy," an Atlantic Monthly article describing intolerable government repression in the long-neglected region of sub-Saharan Africa. Such will be the harvest of empire for our overextended world: warlordism, brutal dictatorships that verge on chaos -- death, and in vast quantities. I don't know whether these predictions will come to pass. But after this past year, I find the possi bility an awful lot easier to imagine (29).
Honorable Mentions
The top 10 conspiracy theories, speculations, and plain odd things I didn't have space to discuss here:
1 The Mel Carnahan and Paul Wellstone plane crashes.
2 Jeb Bush's 7 September 2001 martial law declaration in Florida (Executive Order 01-261).
3 The Flight 93 debris patterns and the ease with which the Flight 93 story that circulated in the major media fits into an archetypal "hero" narrative.
4 Warren Buffett, who -- among with several other World Trade Center executives -- went to Offutt AFB before the attacks on the morning of September 11. This is where Bush went after the attacks began.
5 Potential CIA links to the coup in Venezuela.
6 Cynthia McKinney's insinuation of possible government complicity in September 11 on the floor of Congress.
7 The Phoenix memo and the curious case of the FBI whistleblowers.
8 The idea that the anti-aircraft missiles used when Bush visited Genoa, Italy, were intended to thwart a kamikaze attack.
9 The Bin Laden family's clandestine flight out of the United States in the days after September 11.10 Bush's 6 August 2001, comprehensive briefing, "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S."

SUIT CLAIMS DTF OFFICER ABUSIVE
GREENEVILLE - A Mitchell County, N.C., man says that he was dragged fromhis car, slammed to the ground, and stomped or kneed in the back of his
head by a law enforcement officer while face-first on the ground. In a
civil suit filed in U.S. District Court, Jonathan Brooks Vail said he was
arrested on Jan. 28 by 1st Judicial District Drug Task Force Officer Matt
Thompson, who searched his car, his body and his passenger, apparently for
illegal narcotics.
Vail said no drugs were found and no evidence was collected that showed he
committed a crime, at the time of the arrest or afterward. Thompson then
arrested Vail, charging him with resisting arrest and simple assault, which
Vail said were "bogus criminal charges." In a complaint sworn before Unicoi
County Circuit Court Clerk Gregg Masters, Thompson swore that Vail lunged
at him, "hitting him with his body."
Vail alleges that Thompson's "purposeful lies and deception were motivated
by a desire to create a false appearance" to justify his beating of Vail,"
the suit said.URL: http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03.n108.a13.html------------------------------****!!! IBOGAINE TREATMENT NOW $1500 IN HOLLAND--CALL SARA, 0113134-624-1770 !!!****From: "Patrick K. Kroupa" <digital@...>

it, so your problem is...?
Yes there are various dangers inherent with using ibogaine. To cop a line
from Paracelsus, "everything is poison, nothing is poison." Nothing is
absolutely safe, least of all any given day in the life of a junkie or
crackhead <shrug>.
To articulate my own OPINION; there seems to be an increasingly large
contingent of people dosing drug-dependent individuals with ibogaine,
under a wide variety of conditions.
The main question appears to be: what happens to any given individual who
experiences an adverse event -- however you choose to define "adverse
event" -- under the influence of ibogaine, if that situation is not
immediately dealt with (or even noticed, if no monitoring is taking
place). Will they drop dead?
The answer seems to be: maybe, but probably not. 'Cuz if somewhere there
is a growing mountain of dead bodies, I'm not aware of it.
Whatever you wind up doing, YOU are ultimately responsible for YOU. If
you want to dose with ibogaine, it'd be a great idea to at least give
yourself basic familiarity with what to expect, and read through the
ibogaine manual.
http://www.ibogaine.org/manual.html
| Or does she need to make another 10 million before she's sure of the results?
Deborah has never made $10 dollars from ibogaine, much less anything
approaching $10 million. HV is a dog with fleas in terms of cashflow;
factor in all the expenses of flying MD's, counselors, shrinks, and
various other staff, to an island in the middle of nowhere, and what it
costs to get all of them to drop their practices and personal lives for
two weeks while they sit and spin on St. Kitts, and you arrive at breaking
even.
If you cannot afford St. Kitts, or the whole scenario is not to yourliking, well then: go somewhere else! Big fucking deal. The situation is
dramatically different than it was a few years ago; the prices for
ibogaine and ibogaine treatment start at NOTHING, and move upwards from
there depending on what you want, and where you'd like to go. You have
many choices.
http://www.ibogaine.co.uk/options.htm
If Deborah's publishing schedule is not to your liking, oh well. The
problem is that she's at the Department of Neurology, *not* the Department
of Ibogaine. There doesn't seem to be anybody who wants to fund anything
related to ibogaine, and gosh, running a department has expenses; thusly,
shit that pays the bills gets prioritized above the Holy Crusade, which
has never generated .5 fucking cents.
If you'd like to accelerate things, restart clinical trials within the
United States, and see ibogaine move forward a little faster than the
speed of a crawling snail: please feel free to send cash to the Ibogaine
Research Project. It's a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and
you can write it off on your taxes.
Or buy plane tickets for somebody who can't afford it, to go see Marc.
If you just wanna bitch about shit <shrug> welcome to the human race, hope
it provides a nice catharsis.

>From a friend of a friend.
Took 400mgs Ibogaine hcl at 9:45am and laid down
After 40 minutes or so I started having slight visuals and mild physical
trembling.
Somewhere around the 1 hour mark I felt the ibo surge through my body like an
expanding energetic doughnut, racing through every cell in my body. Then the
rocking and spinning began. Trying to control that was useless so I gave in to
it, reluctantly. I was surprised at the strength of the onset.
I started traveling through space, with stars blurring past me at tremendous
speed. I realized I was in a spiraling cosmic tube, traveling galactic
distances, deep into the purple. It occurred to me I was traveling through the
tube that connects me to the god source, and I could see through the tube's
transparent walls that there were other tubes, and there were other beings
making the same journey. On and on I sped while my physical body back on earth
was pinned to the bed with incredible gravity.
And then I saw it.
The god head.
The most brilliant sphere of pure energy and light, and emanating from it were
the spiral tubes that connect to all living beings. The tube I was in. The
piece of God that I represent as a child of the light.
That vision faded but I could still sense my rapid pace, and the horrific
visions started. Great rings of fire and battlefields and nuclear war raged on
and on. I was experiencing the collective conscience of humanities struggle
with money, greed and war. Planets ravaged by smoke and flame and strange
winged beasts that breath sulfurous fumes and the fear, the deepest darkest
fear pierced me to my core. Not a Good Sign.
I watched as the same story repeated itself over and over, with the people in
power spreading fear and chaos to keep us in control, cowering in the corner
feeding on drugs and materialism. I knew from the deepest seat of my soul that
I was not of that cast, the reptilian war mongers. Iíve played the victim role,
feeding on the hype and sensationalism that pollutes the airwaves of the great
media mogul.
Exhaustingly I watched as battles waged and the earth glowed with radioactivity
and toxic waste. The great Dark Religion of wealth and greed consumed every
green inch of the earth and I cowered in its darkness.
My deepest feelings from child hood came forward; the feeling of never being
safe from my fatherís rage and my mothers complacency and the constant threat
through the 70ís and 80ís of eminent nuclear war all came bubbling to the
surface.
I began to retch somewhere around the 3 hour mark, it was very painful and I
had the dry heaves. I decided I donít like Ibogaine very much, I felt horrible. My first two experiences were so different, I felt as though the ibo spirit
really wanted to rub my face in the shit this time, to see clearly what is
happening with humanity, how it all is coming to a head, how the petro-chemical
companies run the government and the economy, and how the U.S.'s have turned
into the worst of the worlds greed and war mongers.
This waged on for many hours, finally after 11-12 hours it began to pass, but
came back in small pulses, more war and destruction. I managed to eat about 3
grapes. Any task I attempted took long minutes of pondering, to lift a finger
summoned all the will power I could manage. After showering and changing
clothes I felt slightly refreshed, but completely weak from the experience. I
knew it was over, thank god it was short lived but man was it intense for such
a small dose. A friend pointed out the cleansing I had done earlier in the week
probably made me extra sensitive to the medicine. Later somewhere around 11pm I
took a sleeping aid and dosed off for a few hours. All in all I managed to get
about 6 hours sleep.
This morning I feel pretty vulnerable and emotional, but good. I discussed my
experience with someone who has been there and back and we talked about the
balance between the dark side and the light side, and how important it is to
stay in the light and to have humor and above all to love and be loved.
Iëm not feeling any real withdrawal from the pills, I was taking anywhere
between 20-40mgs of oxycodone and 1,000mgs of Soma for the past month or so. I
donít have a desire to take the pills other than for the continuing pain in my
neck and head that prompted me to get a prescription in the first place. I am
going to try something called wobenzyme for the pain.
Ibogaine is an excellent laxative.
I would be happy not to take Ibogaine for another five years. (I last took it
in Feb 1998 for opiod addiction)
