POT SMOKING POLITICAL PARTY BACKING KERRY
www.flashnews.com

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Wireless Flash) -- John Kerry is more
marijuana-friendly than George W. Bush.
That's why the U.S. Marijuana Party is blowing their
support behind the Massachusetts senator.
Party founder Loretta Nall says Kerry is a lot more
likely to make marijuana-related policies that mesh closer to
the pot-smoking party's platform, such as ending marijuana
prohibition and releasing all non-violent drug offenders in
prison.
On the other hand, Nall says Bush is a lost cause,
because as she puts it, "You can't get any worse than him."
Nall began the party two years ago and says she will be
running for governor of Alabama in 2006, figuring it's the
only way to focus attention on her reefer crusade.
Although Nall admits she'll "never" be elected as
governor, she just wants to put a light onto the issue
because right now "there's no one in politics who will speak
for us."

Letter To The Editor Of The Washington Post From Keith Stroup

Submitted by Fairy of the Garden on Tue, 10/05/2004 - 13:51. MDMJ | Politics

We received a copy of this letter to the editor of The Washington Post from Keith Stoup and felt we should share it with you. Let us know what you think.

To the Editor
 The Washington Post

Dear Sir:

In the nearly 35 years that our organization has been fighting to end marijuana prohibition, and to stop the senseless arrest of marijuana smokers, I have never witnessed a more tragic example of the need to repeal these destructive laws than that of Jonathan Magbie, a 27-year-old Mitchellville man who was recently sentenced to 10 days in the DC jail for marijuana possession. Magbie, a quadriplegic since age 4 when he was struck by a drunk driver, operated his motorized wheelchair with his chin. He was otherwise totally dependent on others for his care.

According to the Post report, when asked by the court?s pre-sentence investigators about his marijuana smoking, Magbie said he would continue using the drug because it made him feel better. Apparently that honesty was too much for Judge Judith E. Retchin, who proceeded to ignore the pre-sentence report recommending probation, a recommendation to which the US Attorney?s Office had not objected, and to impose a 10-day jail sentence on this terribly handicapped individual, apparently to teach him a lesson.

The lesson for all of us, though not the one intended by this apparently uncaring judge, was that even a few days in the DC jail system can be a death sentence for those with serious medical problems. Jonathan Magbie died from unexplained causes, currently under investigation, but it is clear that his death was the result of his being sent to jail by Judge Retchin.

According to the latest government surveys, at least 27 million Americans smoked marijuana last year, and most of them did it for the same reason that Jonathan Magbie did: because it made them feel better. Marijuana is a safe drug, when used responsibly, and unlike alcohol, that results in approximately 50,000 deaths each year in this country, and tobacco, which results in more than 400, 000 deaths each year, marijuana has never caused a death in the history of mankind. It is simply not sufficiently toxic. Yet alcohol and tobacco are legal, while marijuana remains classified as a dangerous drug, and more than 600,000 Americans are arrested each year for smoking it.

Surely this tragic incident will cause the DC City Council to consider decriminalizing minor marijuana offenses in the District. Until that can be accomplished, perhaps this tragedy will cause the DC Police to consider issuing tickets to minor marijuana offenders, as Mayor Daly recently suggested for Chicago, instead of arresting and jailing smokers. A fine rather than a 10-day jail sentence would have saved Magbie?s life.

This is truly a sad time for all of us, and especially for the family and friends of Jonathan Magbie. He did not deserve to die for smoking marijuana.

An Open Letter to the
Kerry / Edwards Campaign

Dear Sirs,

We are appealing for a higher-level review of our request for clarification as to whether your platform language calling for  "increased treatment"  for drug addiction refers mostly to treatments already in the SAMSHA pipeline, or whether it heralds a new, more science-based commitment to explore research into more promising approaches that could transform the way our society deals with its drug problem.

During the Wisconsin primary, when Theresa Heinz Kerry came back and asked for more literature  on these medications, we were heartened-only to encounter a conventional wisdom among staffers that the only forms of treatment that could be specified in the platform without losing votes to Bush were "mandatory drug courts and mandatory urine testing." (Neither one of which is treatment.)

Over the summer our affiliates faxed this headquarters from Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Oregon and Washington-all key battleground states-about the first generation of broad-spectrum addiction interrupters, derived from the African rainforest iboga plant.

They understood that like many Americans, many Kerry/Edwards campaign staffers were simply unaware of this new class of broad-spectrum pharmacotherapies for addiction-one totally unlike previous maintenance drugs or blockers. A single dose or short course of treatments with one of these alkaloids stops withdrawal and cravings for opiates, nicotine, alcohol for months, or even years. Currently, there is NOTHING else available to treat crack or crystal meth dependency BUT Ibogaine.

Recently, the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) put up its own webpage (http://www.oasas.state.ny.us/AdMed/meds/fyiibogaine.htm) touting the semi-synthetic form "18 MC", invented by Stanley Glick (a regular recipient of NIDA research grants) at Albany Medical College. 18 Methoxycoronaridine has none of the objectionable side-effects of natural Ibogaine, is NOT scheduled, and is twice  as effective for nicotine (and potentially stimulant) addiction. (Ibogaine is banned in the U.S.-but legal almost everywhere else in the world, including Mexico and Canada.)

While we can accept that advocating treatment, not prison, may seem like a tough sell in this campaign, people who are not familiar with our slice of the electorate just don't really understand how important replacement of imprisonment with non-
coercive treatment is to our voters. The current platform language is making it really hard to generate the enthusiasm to go out and really stump for Kerry among the one or two per cent of the electorate who voted for Ralph Nader or Harry Browne in 2000 because of their strong public opposition to the Drug War.

All we asked from the campaign was a fig leaf-something-we could take back to our people to get them to vote for Kerry enthusiastically, not just grudgingly, so that all their friends turn out and vote for him as well. We need more than the wink and nudge routine we got from Clinton. ACT UP at least got Clinton to endorse needle exchange in October of 1992-and that made a difference later.

Recently, however, Kristin Sewell, who works for Madhu Chugh, your health policy coordinator, told us the decision had been reached not to refer the matter to anyone with sufficient authority to issue a one-sentence statement. We cannot accept Ibogaine being swept under the rug. Not only are lives being lost, VOTES will be lost for Kerry in November. Zogby has identified inability to motivate your own constituencies as this campaign's greatest weakness. Do you really want to throw away hundreds of votes in all the states where organizers took the trouble to fax you-when the race could be decided in any one of these states by a few hundred votes?

What is needed with a breakthrough treatment like this is the kind of bold White House initiative Richard Nixon displayed in implementing methadone maintenance over the objections of the nay-sayers and "not invented here" cadres of established bureaucracy. That initiative should start with a commitment to order a review of the status of the iboga alkoids BEFORE November 2, when it can still do some good.

If you can come out for stem-cell research, you can come out for the next generation of drugs to treat addiction, and turn the promise of treatment on demand into reality. Help us get the more than one million people, who voted for Nader because he was for a progressive drug policy, to vote for John Kerry.

Yours Respectfully,
Doug Greene, Ibogaine Project Campaign Liaison (516) 242-4666 douggreene@...

Mindvoxians, I can't sleep after everything in my head is moving in 7/8 time to a rumba beat in 4/4 time. Its hard to explain but I know it beats the holy shit out of everything else I have tried, bar none. The withdrawals are virtually non existent. I've never experienced any thing so magical. I thought I might share a vision I experienced if you would so indulge me. While I was in the  thick of it I asked the pygmie (yea I saw a pygmie) what It would look like on earth from space and they showed me. I statred out hovering about 50 feet off the ground looking down and consintrating on a specific spot and we blasted off. The spot on earth instantly was way down there and we were going up faster and faster and as we broke into space we hesitated for just a secound and then it was warp drive and I watched as earth became very distant. I was right in the space ship. One of the coolest things I've ever seen. It gave me the feeling that we are just specks in the universe. Nothing special. It was never ever scary in the least bit for me. 6 days no withdrawals. Its a miracle. I hope it lasts. I know what to do if it doesn't. I'm not looking to do it any more for quite a while but I'm kicking the methadone plague and it just might take a secound time. O yea, one bit of advise, lay as still as you can when you do it.I didn't and paid dearly in the bucket a couple of times. Dramamine works pretty good for me too. Took a pretty good booster today and was never sick. I was eating four hours later. The Ibogaine told me to go eat so I did and never felt nauseous at all. Now I'm starving, I can't get enough grapes and juice tastes especially good. All in all, it was a great experience. Peace             Randy

Hey list,

Sorry if this has already been brought up, but I
stumbled across this brief abstract:

http://opioids.com/surgery/index.html

Apparently, the aim of this study is to "... explore a
new way of treating drug addiction by ablating the
nucleus accumbens...".  In other words, let's remove a
small portion of your brain, and ((PRESTO)),
apparently you won't want to do drugs any more!

Is anyone else as disturbed by this as I am?  Or am I
being paranoid?  It just seems a little drastic,
hailing back to the days of using a lobotomy to "cure"
various types of mental illness.

Julie

Here's the link to some great mp3 files on Bwiti Music.  Great pictures
and story too(copy the long URL in exactly to get there):
http://www.musictherapyworld.de/modules/mmmagazine/showarticle.php?articletoshow=63&language=en

Congratulations on your "Ibo 1.0" Randy, I've noticed recurrent African
themes and images from my time there and that of clients. Pygmies, tribal
scenes, verdant jungle landscapes, drumming, thrumming sonic tracks, and
Bwiti herself, usually as a slim, sprightly, 20-40 something,Black lady,
funny/heavy presence, often masked or shadowed. Must be some plant/human
DNA psychic resonance thang we all share, ya think?

Julie, some natural medicines beyond those Jasen mentioned are available.
These help at balancing out the brain chemicals so often whacked by
addictive drugs(with some lifestyle, nutritional risks that klingon with
them). 2 Herbs that help in addition to the St. John's wort are Kava Kava
and PassionFlower(Passiflora).  What I'm finding leverages things better
as before treatment, or during, after withdrawal are the following.  The
net will help you locate them:

(L-)Theanine in 100-150mg size capsules,
Lithium Orotate-120mg tablets(4.3mg elemental Lithium),
GABA(Gamma Amino Butyric Acid) as pills or powder, a dose being 500mg., and,
DMAE (DiMethylAmino Ethanol)-the Twinlabs liquid drops with 100mg dose(has
100 doses per bottle).

Start to use all these together at the same time.Take the 2 pills with
some water (a cup or less)with the powdered GABA(500mg.) and the drops of
DMAE(100mg worth) in it for 3 times every day, about an hour away from
food. Best times I would think would be 3PM, 8 PM, and before bed.  It
won't taste great. (These doses and times are guesstimates, work with your
provider and inner healer to tune for you).

After a few days of this, regardless of where the methodone use is, start
to stretch the Methadone out to only when and how much you need. Don't go
through suffering or discomfort if you need the Methadone, especially if
you have an Ibogaine session coming. That will do the "heavy lifting" of
helping you plug those receptors with the noribo metabolite. This way you
sidestep most of the withdrawal misery.  Other providers more experienced
with MMT than I describe a prolonged period of nursing after long, high
MMT levels. These nutrient supplements would only help that process.

It isn't all Chemistry 101, this treatment strategy, like maybe you should
"buy 2 kittens, feed them and call me after the weekend" during that
re-integration phase. Wake up your love for others and depression tends to
lighten and fade as well.

Dr. Tom
