A Community Luncheon
in Support of
Matthew Barber
When: Sunday August 22, 2004
1:00 p.m.
Where: The Barber Residence
2802 Holiday Pines, Traverse City
Suggested Donation: $20.00
Matt, a Gulf War-era disabled veteran, has multiple sclerosis which is 100% service-related. He, with his wife Laura at his side, has tried every treatment and drug that doctors have recommended, although many were financially devastating, and many carried side effects as bad as the disease. Worse, none of them helped Matt. He continued to experience severe pain, muscle spasms, loss of bodily functions, and even blindness, in addition to the nausea and confusion caused by pharmaceuticals and other treatments.
Finally, in desperation, and on the advice of a neurologist from California who examined him and his treatment history in a downstate VA hospital, Matt tried cannabis. To his amazement, he experienced immediate relief from his most severe symptoms; and with continued use of cannabis, he is no longer wheelchair bound and has a much better quality of life.
Now, as a result of a June 12 traffic stop, Matt is under legal attack in Traverse City, Michigan, charged with possession of the only thing that lets him walk, eat, sleep naturally, and enjoy his time with family and friends. Rather than plea-bargaining, the Barbers have decided to take a stand for the rights of medical cannabis users, along with their doctors, to determine their own treatment. This carries the risk of a jail sentence, which for Matt could be a death sentence.
The case has already drawn attention in the local press, and from a group of talented and compassionate attorneys led by ACLU legend Dean Robb, who are representing Matt at a fraction of their usual rate. Still the Barbers, their finances depleted by years of costly treatments, face thousands of dollars of bills in connection with this fight.
Please join us for a delicious buffet luncheon on Sunday, August 22, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in Matt and Laura's home. This is a great opportunity to contribute to this worthy cause, as well as to meet the Barbers and get more information on their case and how you can help.
This is a fundraiser, so we are suggesting a minimum donation of $20.
If you can give more, please do. If you are unable to give as much financially, but have other helpful talents, connections or energy, please come and give what you can.
Please forward and distribute widely.

Marijuana Grower Could Face Life in Prison By Glenda Anderson
Source: Press Democrat August 20, 2004
A Lake County man accused of growing more than 32,500 pot plants in plain view of Highway 20 travelers could face life in prison if convicted of federal charges filed against him Thursday. Charles "Eddy" Lepp, 52, was arraigned Thursday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco on charges of marijuana cultivation, conspiracy to cultivate marijuana and maintaining drug-involved premises, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Dave Hall.Read More... http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread19368.shtml-------From: Hempsters@...Fwd: DPFOR: "Quo Warranto" defense = marijuana possession dismissal?Howdy,
NY pot activist, Dana Beal's daughter was ticketed with possession of
marijuana by one of Eugene's finest. Dana knew of my "defense" and asked I speak with
his daughter. I told her of my experience in California of getting my
marijuana arrest dismissed and of my local public pronouncements of "Quo Warranto,"
challenging the "presumptive" jurisdiction and legislative authority
concerning prohibitory statutes. She felt akin to my thoughts on the matter and usedthe "Quo Warranto" defense and presented the court with that argument.
The court dismissed that argument but when the matter came to court, the
charge was dismissed. The reason -- nonappearance of the police officer. If the
prosecuter/court wanted the police officer there, he would have been there, the
police station is in the same building. If one believes the law has authority,
proving possession of a "baggie" with "unlawful" vegetable material and
getting a "conviction" is not a hard task. The realization and the groundwork laid
at public meetings and getting it published in a paper of record is sinking
in. Without the Constitutional authority shield, local officials may be taken to
court on civil charges for denial of civil liberties. Possession of marijuana
is a civil liberty guaranteed mightily under the US and Oregon Constitutions.
The laws against cannabis possession are "ab initio."
Stand up for your rights.
You might be amazed.

--------------Bush administration's drug policies fuel Hempfest stance
By Sandeep Kaushik, Globe Correspondent | August 20, 2004
SEATTLE -- More than 150,000 denizens of the Northwest will gather this weekend in a waterfront park for Hempfest, billed as the largest promarijuana gathering in the country, to listen to speeches from the biggest names in the national drug-law reform movement between band sets and bong hits.
But this year, attendees will hear an explicitly partisan message, too: Organizers are pushing pot smokers to help elect Senator John F. Kerry president.
The size of Hempfest indicates the potential power of the pro-pot vote, particularly in the Northwest, reformers said. Organizers think that registering even a few thousand Hempfest attendees could make the difference in a close election. ''It is essential for our crowd to understand that there is nothing more important they can do for drug policy reform than to go out and cast their ballots in the Democratic box in November," said Dominic Holden, 27, a spokesman for the festival.
The decision to break with the tradition of nonpartisanship that has guided the festival in its 12 previous incarnations was born out of the Bush administration's aggressive policies against marijuana, Hempfest organizers said. While many of the 1,200 volunteers working on the festival personally adhere to political views more in line with the Green Party or of independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader, this year they think the stakes are too high for their constituency to vote for third-party candidates and risk throwing the election to President Bush.
''When you look at what's happening on the front lines of the drug war under the Bush administration, the federal government has waged war against sick and dying people who use medical marijuana and those compassionate enough to help them," Holden said. ''We need to unite and get George Bush out of office. We need to vote for John Kerry."
Holden cited federal drug raids in recent years against medical marijuana collectives in California that operated in accordance with state law and the support of local officials as a motivating factor in the festival's decision to push an anti-Bush message, as well as White House drug czar John Walters's personal lobbying efforts last year against I-75, a Seattle voter initiative that called for authorities to make enforcement of marijuana laws their lowest priority. Despite Walters's opposition, I-75 passed last September with 58 percent support.
More than 20 outside groups have signed up to do voter outreach at the event, either staffing international booths or sending more than 100 canvassers through the crowd to promote voter registration. These include environmental, antiwar, and other activist groups, ranging from small groups to better-known entities such as the League of Women Voters.
The Kerry campaign also will have a presence at the event, with campaign volunteers staffing a booth and circulating among the crowd, organizers said.Sam Rodriguez, director of Kerry's Washington state campaign, said there is nothing surprising about the fact that the Democratic coalition includes a broad range of ideological viewpoints, from very liberal to conservative. ''Members of one-issue organizations -- that's part of our democracy. We look at all Americans as potential John Kerry-John Edwards voters," he said. ''We are all united to defeat George W. Bush."
The festival has always had a political, conscious-raising component complementing the entertainment that helps draw crowds to the event. In between pot-friendly musical acts performing on multiple stages -- the headliners are the Kottonmouth Kings, Los Marijuanos, and Sir Mix-A-Lot -- every year Hempfest speakers urge attendees to register to vote to have more influence on efforts to liberalize drug laws. Tying that effort to the fortunes of a particular presidential candidate, however, is new.
Some national advocates of liberalizing drug laws slated to speak at Hempfest said they were supportive of Kerry over Bush but were wary of explicitly supporting the Democratic Party. While they agreed with organizers that the Bush administration has to be ousted, they also cited the support they have received from prominent libertarian-leaning Republicans.
''When it comes to the drug war, the Bush administration is a disaster," said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, which promotes harm reduction and treatment as alternatives to the current punitive approach to drug use. While Kerry seems more sympathetic on topics like medical marijuana, needle exchange, and reforming mandatory minimum sentencing statutes, ''we know going in he will disappoint us," Nadelmann said.
Keith Stroup, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, said that, ''all of us recognize that there is no question that marijuana reform policies would be better served with someone else in office other than George Bush."
But he added that the movement is committed to reaching out to all political parties. ''It would be a terrible mistake to let the [marijuana reform] issue be perceived as a Democratic issue," he said.
The Kerry campaign and the festival organizers seemed wary of possibly tainting the campaign with countercultural associations that could turn off mainstream voters. The presence of Kerry volunteers at Hempfest, or the push by organizers to get smokers to the polls in November, should not be seen as an implicit endorsement of the Hempfest agenda by the Kerry campaign, Holden said.
''I wouldn't want to say that their agenda is our agenda," he said. ''With 150,000 politically aware people here, they would be fools not to come out and do voter registration."-----------------------------------------From: tents444@...There are still many cities missing from the MMM photo gallery:

Kerry: Get an Herbal, not a Fetal Position By Ellen Komp
Source: AlterNet August 06, 2004If Kerry makes good on his promise to review research on medical marijuana when he takes office, he'll be amazed at what has been learned in the last several years. John Kerry's acceptance speech for the Democratic presidential nomination ended with a series of "what if's": "What if we find a breakthrough to cure Parkinson's, diabetes, Alzheimer's and AIDS?" he wondered aloud, to the cheers of the crowd.
Innovative treatments for these diseases, and many others, may be closer than Kerry knows, and it won't take fetal tissue to find them. If Kerry makes good on his promise to review research on medical marijuana when he takes office, he'll be amazed at what has been learned in the last several years.
After the voters of California and Arizona legalized medical marijuana in 1996, then-drug "czar" Barry McCaffrey commissioned a $1 million scientific review of existing studies on marijuana by the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine. Since the 1999 IOM report was published, hundreds of studies on cannabinoids, the active compounds in marijuana, and their newly developed cognates, have uncovered astonishing results.
"Every one of our body's organized systems makes and responds to marijuana-like compounds: cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, excretory, immunological, nervous, reproductive and respiratory," says Dr. Robert Melamede, head of the biology department at the University of Colorado (Colorado Springs). Endogenous (natural in the body) cannabinoids and their receptors are popping up everywhere, and showing beneficial effects in animal and clinical (human) studies.

This might be a bit off-color for some, so if you've got sensitive eyes
and brains, read no more.
For the rest of you, who have been following my trials and travails, and
recent resetting, here I go.
I have more energy that I've had in YEARS since taking ibogaine. I mean
it, I'm getting up early in the morning, just like usual, but then I make a
hearty breakfast, a real, hot breakfast, even adding yet MORE fruit to the
mix this morning, blueberry on my morning's newly-ritualistic french toast.
But even more, I'm going out and moving around outside, all day, meeting
publishers, being active, making plans and plots and actually carrying
through on them in major ways. (The release party for Under the Influence
will be held Oct. 21, 2004, at Uncle Ming's in the LES, Manhattan, so please
mark your calandars- this is going to be one hell of a party, with hopefull
Joker 5 Speed playing and possibly another band or two as well- it's gonna
be a REAL party, so make plans all. This has to be the biggest event I've
ever tried to put together, and it seems, at this point anyway, to be
progressing smoothly.)
V and I went to see the "Marijuanalogues" last night (a perk of writing
for HT- get in free to cool off-Broadway shows about pot), then I went and
dj'd for about 5 hours straight, then we came home, and, well, made love.
I mean, you know, we made lots and lots of really horny amazing
sex-love, for hours it felt like (cause it was for hours, LOL), in a way as
I've not been able to accomplish in, oh, ages and ages, due to all my nerve
endings being so numbed out by opiates that, well, suffice it to say I've
not been the most sexually active individual for some time- and I have
always felt it one of the most special activities that two people (or heck,
more for those freaky types out there) can do together. Seeing as I am
totally head over heels in love, have always loved sex of all kinds, and am
extremely faithful to a fault (well, not really to a fault, that's known as
an "expression"), it's been most frustrating to be such a "limp-dick" for so
long, to be blunt about it.
But now I find, post-ibogaine, that things have changed. Wow! have they
changed. I mean, up till recently things were ok, but not really all thatmagical. Hate to admit it, but I will- I've been a fairly accomplished
looser lately in this regard.
Now though, magical almost begins to cover things, but only barely as
things have gotten lots and lots bigger and, oh, harder and such. I realize
I'm being awfully open about my personal life and relationship here, but
hey, I'm so blown away (to coin a phrase) by the difference, as is my
ultra-only-significant other, that I felt I had to say something about it,
as it is yet another definite plus to having had the opportunity to try
ibogaine.
So, throw away the Vigra and Cialis or whatever it is you're using and
try ibogaine.
;-))
No, but seriously, I've not ever actually tried either Viagra or Cialis,
but I don't imagine I will either now. Who needs that crap, I've got
cleanliness to help me. And love and lust too, amazingly, after 8 years-
real, hot, steamy lust and such.
Nuther big, happy, satisfied grin due here- :-)))
Peace and love to all, and I hope I've not exposed too much here on this
open list, but hell, I'm so, ummm, happy? Drained? Incredibly satisfied?
Like a new man?
"All of the above" should just about do it.
Peace and love again,
PrestonFrom: ptpeet@...Sherrie the great writer wrote >isn't it interesting how you seem to be

Yes Sherrie, it truely is amazing.
V is so blown away by my healthy kick she can't get enough of it. She
keeps telling her friends how I'm suddenly addicted to Fruit and such. Wehave this little black board in the kitchen wall on which has been written
for at least a year "Healthy Preston," sorta as a reminder/incantation from
V in hopes it'll take root and grow in me- but to no avail until quite
recently. She almost erased it not so long ago, but decided to leave it a
while longer, just in case. Now though it's almost all I can think about-
how healthy I want to be.
And for me, this is REALLY WEIRD.
I've not been a health kick person since my car accident at 16, always
feeling and living very nihilistically, self-destructively, but now, hey,
I'm loving the feeling of feeling things- even my pain feels much different.
Lessened somehow, or at the least easier to cope with.
I'm actually planning on one more session with ibogaine in the near
future, to try and cement some stuff and further examine other stuff. I was
so shattered feeling (as I think I've noted before) by the first 24 hours of
my recent experience that I feel I missed some stuff I shoulda been paying
attention to, or that I at least should have followed futher while under the
influence but didn't, being so panicked and freaked, and basically scared
outta my wits.
So while I'm showing many definite signs of improvement already and
still, I'm feeling that another journey can do nothing but further cement
this state of grace- or at least, help me to do so- that as scary as it was
I'm going through it again as soon as possible.
My cigarette habit is REALLY bothering me, and I STILL haven't made the
slightest cut in usage- which is bugging the hell outta me as that is one of
the LEAST healthy things I could be doing to myself. Addiction is a bug out,
no doubt about it at all, no matter what the substance or its legal status.
Peace and love to all,
Preston

There are still a lot of questions/concerns that I (probably many others also) have about the whole idea of Iboga/Ibogaine treatment. I want to thank everyone who takes the time to help inform those of us who are in search of these answers. I hope to be able to provide many answers for people, as an "Ibonaut", very soon.CharlieFrom: Sapphirestardus@...Preston, let me ask you something. I remember when I was in jail and didn't have meth for a few days, though I was sick, it was easy to orgasm. In fact when I lied in bed, I would just come like a wet dream. Is this why your sex life is better now or is IBOGAINE itself affecting a change within you? If you're not sure why you're 'healthier' maybe Howard can answer this. I'm specifically interested not in the psychological differences in your life post Ibo but rather the biological/pharmacological differences from Ibogaine if there are any.
One last thing Preston. I am happy for you as well as envious(not jealous) you have a great woman in your life. I think, for me, one of the most important things if not the most important is love and how that manifests in your relationships. Right now, it seems the only person(s) I really love are my daughters. That's fine but I need a woman to love and be with. Sex is....well suffice to say I haven't been with a woman I love or even like in,(I can't believe I'm saying this but I guess I need to get it out, it's festering in me like cancer...it really hurts!) 7 years. I feel like a fucking virgin again. I still need to orgasm two to three times a day which is not bad for my age and drug ingestion but loving and being intimate with a woman? Nothing! Maybe it will change after Ibogaine next week but for some reason, unless the 'trip' deals with this aspect of my life, I doubt anything will change. SHIT! I sort of wish now I didn't say anything. I'm feeling like everyone is thinking I am really fucked up but of course no one would ever say that. People will say they understand and relate etc. but they can't because it seems like everyone or almost everyone is either making love to friends or has a person they love and is intimate with them.
Fuck it. If you could just let me know about ibogaine and your sexual drive that would be great. Love your woman like you do, it's really a fantastic thing to have in life.

It's very very different from the usual, "I'm withdrawing and my sperm are
exploding out for no reason" cumming I've experienced in the past, in
remarkably similar way to how you've described it here. I think it's not
really the ibogaine either, but rather, the fresh, "I'm alive and don't

Ok, I'll say it- Julian, yer really Fucked Up!
LOL.
Seriously though, I'm super glad to hear your submitting to an ibo session.
I can't say I relate at the moment to the woman-less lifestyle, as yer
right, I'm very very lucky to have V. (Especially after screwing up a couple
of other very decent loving relationships in my life with women I thought I
was going to be with for years and year and year.) I've felt for years that
I don't deserve to be with V, or anyone, as I was such a shit head to other
women at one time or other, stealing everything in the house that wasn't
nailed down for crack/coke/dope/etc. But apparently karma works both
directions, in that I suspect I'm reaping rewards by having V because of
something I am still going to pull off in the future- or so I like to think. It would be really nice if this were true.>>Fuck it. If you could just let me know about ibogaine and your sexual drive

It seems that lately all of V's friends keep telling her how jealous they
are of our relationship- and believe you me I do not want to ever let it go.
I love her and she me, and it's all good. I'm very very aware of how lucky I
am in my relationship, how awful things could actually be but for now
aren't.

Just keep on doing the right thing and it'll get better!" (vomit) I'm looking forward to the session and will definitely let you know how it went. I am going to be recording (audio and video) as well as attempting to write as much as possible (though I hear the ataxia is pretty intense and it may not be easy) for one of my books.
