CANNABIS SMOKE 'WORSE' THAN TOBACCO
Smoking pure cannabis is more harmful to lungs than tobacco, a
health
charity is warning.
A study by the British Lung Foundation found that just three
cannabis
joints a day cause the same damage as 20 cigarettes.
And when cannabis and tobacco are smoked together, the effects are
dramatically worse.
Evidence shows that tar from cannabis cigarettes contains 50% more
cancer
causing carcinogens than tobacco.
Dr Mark Britton, chairman of the British Lung Foundation, said:
"These
statistics will come as a surprise to many people, especially those
who
choose to smoke cannabis rather than tobacco in the belief it is safer
for
them.

The issue of smoked cannabis as a possible cause of lung cancer needs
some
clarification. First epidemiological studies do not support the
notion that
cannabis smoking leads to lung cancer. However, there are studies that
show
smoking pot produces "precancerous" cellular alterations.
The question
becomes will pot smokers develop lung cancer as do cigarette smokers,
but
perhaps at a slower rate. There is no evidence to support this
hypothesis.
Alternatively, there are established facts regarding the impact of
marijuana
on the immune system that should be considered. The immune systems
has
specific cannabinoid receptors (CB2) that are distinguishable from
the
neurological variety (CB1). Stimulation of the CB2 receptor plays
an
important role in what is known as "immune deviation". The
immune system can
typically respond in either of two general patterns known as a th1 or
a th2
cytokine response. Cannabinoids cause the immune system to deviate to
a th2,
anti-inflammatory response. In contrast, tobacco smoke lacks this
pharmacological property and results in a pro-inflammatory response.
The
pro-inflammatory response is characterized by free radical production
which
will exacerbate any carcinogens in the smoke. Hence tobacco smoke
causes an
immune response that will amplify smokes carcinogenic potential
whereas
marijuana smoke will intrinsically reduces its own carcinogenic
potential.

Subject: Journey4Justice in Cass County MI
Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2002 20:22:29 -0500
Greetings to all drug peacemakers.
On November 12, in Cass
County, Michigan CAN joined Hillsdale County NORML, November
Coalition, and other phriends and phamily of Rainbow Farm to remember
the sacrifice made by Tom and Rollie and to demonstrate once more to
the surrounding community that we will not forget.
Our northern Michigan contingent
arrived in the area on Monday night, and as always, felt the strong
uneasy vibe the moment we left US 131 in Schoolcraft. I have made many
trips to Cass County since last year's tragedy, with a variety of
companions, and the phenomenon has been consistent; even folks
who have never been to the Farm, let alone witnessed the government's
assassination operation on Labor Day 2001, can feel the oppressive
weight in the air for at least 20 miles in all directions. The sense
of Something Wrong Here is palpable.
At noon on the 12th, about
two dozen of us gathered at the corner of Route 60 and White
Temple Road, on the debris-strewn property known commonly as
the M-60 protest site. Although most were long-time Farm
veterans, at least two had never been there. Here I met Nora and
Chuck of November Coalition in person for the first time, and
recounted our experiences from the siege, trying to give them a sense
of the emotions. Although a water tower now stands on the
protest site, not much else has changed; and as we held our signs
in the bitter wind, we pointed out the empty school across the highway
where the Authorities had set their command post, and recalled
the eerie feeling of vulnerability we had while sleeping in the
open on this small scrap of earth, watching helicopters, dozens
of police vehicles, shiny new FBI SUVs, tanks and SWAT teams
descend on our compatriots at Rainbow Farm.
Chuck noted the high
percentage of positive gestures and honks from passersby, particularly
truckers, in response to our signs and banners. This was consistent
with what we had experienced last year during and immediately
after the seige. M-60 is a major east-west trucking route, and
we had seen many drivers pick up their cb mics and begin to
spread the word as they passed us. Even during the short time we stood
there on Tuesday, several local citizens took the time to stop
and share their support and their memories of Tom and Rollie as
neighbors. This too echoed last year's experience. These men were
widely recognized as caring and generous members of the
community.
After 45 minutes to an
hour, we formed a slow, headlights-and-flashers-on procession and
drove past the sites of last year's police barricades, to the
gates of Rainbow Farm. We walked the grounds, pointing out a number of
key locations to Chuck and Nora, then gathered on the old stage ---
the only significant structure left standing. Nora shared her memories
of the Farm, and how Tom and Rollie were among the earliest supporters
of November Coalition's goal to go beyond simply decriminalizing
cannabis and end the Drug War altogether. Each of the two
dozen or so attendees had the opportunity to speak his/her peace, and
we closed the circle with a prayer and a moment of silence.
It's hard to describe the
feeling of standing on that hillside, overlooking the weedchoked
remains of what Tom, Rollie, and so many others created and
nurtured so lovingly. I live four hours north of the Farm, and
discovered it relatively late in the game (Hemp Aid '99 was my first
festival). Although the Farm itself and the murders of Tom and Rollie
changed my life forever, and I never pass a day without thinking of
the two men who became my friends and brothers in the last sad summer
of their lives, I must admit I have it easy. I can't forget;
but unlike those who live in the area --- who saw the guys regularly,
who did their laundry at The Joint (the camp store/coffee house), who
hung out many an afternoon, fishing in the pond and pitching
in on projects --- unlike those folks, I can distance myself. I can
retreat back up US131 and let it all fade into the surreality of
a dream I can't forget. But back on the Farm, standing on the
stage, surrounded by others who loved them, others who witnessed
the violence that was visited on this peaceful refuge, I am
repeatedly knocked breathless by the undeniable reality --- both of
the beauty and justice of our cause and culture, and of the brutality
which has met this dream here and elsewhere. I love this place and
these people, but being here with them is almost more than I can bear.
It hammers me with the terrible responsibility to do something, to
never stop fighting the fight, even with the charred evidence of
reprisal all around.
But all around, as well, are the unobtrusive
signs of ongoing small pilgrimages. Flowers and candles seem to have
been replaced and tended in recent memory, personal messages sketched
neatly on the stage's upright beams. The sense of tribe abides in
these woods and meadows; the sense of not just Tom's and Rollie's
spirits, but the echoes of every good time had here from silly to
profound, and the energies of everyone who truly loved the
Farm and what it stood for, everyone who put something of themSelves
back into it. It's a sense of unity and greater purpose, and I am
ultimately renewed and at peace whenever I leave here.
From the Farm, we travelled to the center of
Cassopolis, to demonstrate in front of the courthouse where last
year's hearings took place. We marched slowly back and forth with our
signs for about two hours, again receiving honks and positive salutes
--- the best, for me, were the many enthusiastic peace signs from
kids. The intensity of so many of the gestures gave me the
definite impression that there are those in the community who are no
more ready to let this go than we are.
In the past, we have had very few problems with the
local police, other than their slight difficulty in
understanding the concept of "there is no one in charge."
They have occasionally asked us to move a few feet this way or that,
and on Labor Day they were kind enough to remind us (as a
precautionary measure) that smoking cannabis and public urination
are illegal; and we have always remained respectfully within the
boundaries of the law. During the majority of demonstrations in which
I've participated at this location --- in fact, I'd go so far as to
say, every one other than this --- we have stood still with our signs
for the most part. This has never been an issue.
This time, however, we were approached almost
immediately by an officer who came from the fire department across the
street, and told that we would have to keep moving. He seemed a bit
agitated, but he retired as we complied. At one point, one of our
group stopped on the corner to light a cigarette, and flashed a couple
peace signs into traffic as he did so. Immediately the officer
hotfooted it back across the street, very agitated by now, ranting
something about how we could all (including himself) get
lawyers and see what happened then. It was really kind of bizarre, and
his mood didn't improve when we simply kept marching in silence, with
no one responding to him. Eventually, he seemed to feel he'd gotten
his point across, and retired once more. We spent the remainder of our
time on the street unharassed except by wind.
Near dark, we disbanded and met again at the Super 8
Motel in Three Rivers, where the director of Hillsdale County NORML
had rented a conference room for an evening potluck and time of
sharing. Everyone who had participated throughout the day attended, as
did a few others. We played videos of the Farm, warmed ourselves
around some hot food after a long day in the cold, and were starting
to get into some heavy conversations, when the manager began accusing
someone in our party of smoking marijuana in their room, because of a
smell of incense. It was explained to her that the husband in that
room smokes tobacco (it is a smoking room), while the wife doesn't,
and she burns the incense to cover the smell of his
cigarettes. The manager refused to accept this explanation
and asked us to leave.
We did so after cleaning the room and
determining that some of us would meet next door at the Subway to
continue our conversation and at least put some better closure on the
night. While wating out front for our last straggling member, I
noticed a woman in a dark new SUV parked just around the corner.
She got out and walked past us, further down the parking lot, talking
on a cell phone. As she passed, I saw she was professionally dressed
and had something shiny at her belt, which looked to me like some
sort of badge. As our straggler came out of the motel, he saw she was
calling in vehicle registrations.
Barely had we arrived in the Subway parking
lot, when we were surrounded by police cars, and saw others going to
the motel next door. County, state and city were all represented. The
officer with whom we spoke was polite (the ones that really give me
the creeps are the guys that stand silent at the perimeter, one hand
on their guns). He asked us what had happened, what was our
purpose in meeting tonight, what were our plans now? We said we'd had
a rally that afternoon for our friends Tom and Rollie, who were
murdered last year, and he didn't even blink at the word choice. He
said, "I understand there are issues with the law, but we
received a call about some people being a little disorderly." We
said, no, we left when she asked us to; even cleaned the room and
asked her to inspect it. After checking with the motel manager to be
sure she didn't want to press charges, they wished us a good
evening and left.
Those of us who remained finished the evening
by drinking sodas in Subway and talking strategy. Chuck and Nora
seemed genuinely taken aback at the level of emotion still evident in
the community, and expressed a desire to include Cass County stops
whenever they pass this way. We discussed the possibility of a tour of
Michigan colleges next year, and the idea that some of us have been
kicking around, of traveling throughout the UP, trying to spark
interest and connect with the activists that are already up there. We
said our goodbyes and parted too soon, since all had miles to go
in the morning; and I look forward already to the next time
we meet.
Thanks to:

for drug peace, and continuing coverage of Rainbow Farm.

DEFENDANT CLAIMS JURY SET NEW MEDICAL POT STANDARD
OROVILLE - Michael Farrell's refusal to come down from the roof of
his
rented Chico home last month until the news media arrived was only
the
opening salvo in what promises to be a spirited legal challenge
over how
the state's medical-marijuana law is being interpreted and enforced
locally.
The Chapmantown man has since been evicted from the residence and is
being
prosecuted on felony cultivation and sales charges.
Unbowed, he says he's more determined than ever to seek a way for
others
like him to obtain "safe, legal access" to an herb that not
only eases his
physical pain but has gotten him off the bottle after years of
struggling
with alcoholism.
Farrell, 35, was detained for questioning one day after a Chico
police
detective, reportedly looking for a drive-by shooter, saw what turned
out
to be 18 backyard marijuana plants, some as tall as 17 feet, towering
over
the roof of Farrell's small Wisconsin Street rental.

THE VANCOUVER COMPASSION SOCIETY: A CASE HISTORY
There were no guarantees. Of course, we were all optimistic, but as
I
walked into the courtroom that day, no one could be certain of the
outcome. We stood up as the judge entered. As we sat down again -
myself behind my able attorney John Conroy - my wife, friends and
supporters in the audience, silently awaiting my fate (and the fate
of
the Vancouver Island Compassion Society) - the judge announced that
he
was going to read the entire legal decision aloud.
Judge Higinbotham began to outline the background of the long

DRUG SUSPECT'S TIES TO CIA CITED
A Danish-born Houston-area resident accused in a drugs-for-weapons
deal
involving Colombian terrorists is a former informant who believed the
U.S.
government backed the operation, his attorney said Tuesday.
The attorney, Erik Sunde, insists that client Uwe Jensen had
limited
participation with his boss, Carlos Ali Romero Varela, to broker
a deal
last year between an FBI informant and Colombian terrorists. The
deal
involved trading cocaine for $25 million worth of anti-aircraft
missiles
and other weapons.
Jensen, 66, a naturalized American, insists that the FBI informant
told him
the U.S. government had given the deal its tacit approval, Sunde said.
The
claim, he added, indicates Jensen had no criminal intent.

christian guy neuroskull and him all talk at once, I feel like
smashing
my computer. I don't need 50 mile long pieces of email about
obscure
theology from the two of them. Don't start them up again.
Margeruite is
cool, she's from the siddha yoga ashram and the one who posted

US gov's 'ultimate database' run by a felon
By Thomas C Greene in Washington
Posted: 14/11/2002 at 20:22 GMT
We all know that truth is stranger than fiction, and here we have
an
apparently real item straight from the realm of Tom Clancy. Imagine
a
huge, absolutely huge, central database containing both the
official
and commercial data of every single citizen, run by the US
military
ostensibly for anti-terror and Homeland Security purposes, and all
of
it under the direction of a convicted felon.
Well the database is in development and coming soon, according to
the
New York Times; and the felon who will run it is disgraced
Reagan
administration liar, dirty-trickster and cover-uper Admiral John
M.
Poindexter, who Dubya has taken out of mothballs to keep us all
safe
from dreadful evildoers.
Poindexter got caught up in a little Federal crime spree called
Iran-Contra a decade ago, stood trial and was convicted, but managed
to
escape responsibility on an odd technicality.
As told succinctly by FAS.org, Poindexter was "Indicted March 16,
1988,
on seven felony charges. After standing trial on five charges,
Poindexter was found guilty April 7, 1990, on all counts:
conspiracy
(obstruction of inquiries and proceedings, false statements,
falsification, destruction and removal of documents); two counts
of
obstruction of Congress and two counts of false statements.
District Judge Harold H. Greene sentenced Poindexter June 11, 1990,
to
six months in prison on each count, to be served concurrently. A
three-judge appeals panel on November 15, 1991, reversed the
convictions on the ground that Poindexter's immunized testimony
may
have influenced the trial testimony of witnesses. The Supreme
Court on
December 7, 1992, declined to review the case. In 1993, the
indictment
was dismissed on the motion of Independent Counsel."
Now he's in charge of the newly-invented Information Awareness
Office,
a part of that mixed bag of good and bad, the US Defense
Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and he's got his eye on
basically
every scrap of data about every single citizen. The system Poindy
is
preparing to unleash on us "will provide intelligence
analysts and law
enforcement officials with instant access to information from
Internet
mail and calling records to credit card and banking transactions
and
travel documents, without a search warrant," the NYT article
says.
And he's in no way embarrassed by his role ensuring that the US
military and federal law enforcement and intelligence spooks can
quite
conveniently spy on the populace. He's said openly that the US
government "needs to 'break down the stovepipes' that
separate
commercial and government databases," the article says.
Poindexter joins a slew of Reagan-era retreads and Iran-Contra
alumni
now operating brazenly in Dubya's bureaucracy. No doubt he feels
quite
comfortable among such familiar company, though I doubt I could say
the
same for the rest of us. Æ

Subject: [ibogaine] False positive
Hi everybody,
a funny thing happened to me in Germany few days ago on my way to
Italy. I
got caught at the border with some ibogaine, which is not
scheduled over
there but nevertheless it wasn´t pleasant at all. The funny
thing is that
the drug test that they used showed that it was a methamphetamine,
which was
an obvious "false positive" result to me but not obvious to
them. The
officer looked at me and said : "Probleme.GROSSE probleme.".
I told him that
it´s not what they think it is and that if they want they can send
it to a
forensic lab. Then they used another test set and this time it
didn´t show
any presence of the drug and eventually they let me go. I suppose
that I
wouldn´t have got caught if I wouldn´t have carried through
the border two
slovak hitch-hikers. An italian passport with two slovak passports
must have
been a suspicious combination. The slovaks were less lucky. They
let them get
completely naked and searched also their ass hole if they indeed
weren´t
smuggling anything. Poor guys.
On another occasion a shipment got stopped and showed a false positive
for
opiates. I got it back to me a month later after forensic test had
been
done, which showed that it was ibogaine with trace amounts of
ibogamine.
The message is the following:
If anything like this would happen to any of you (outside the US),
don´t
worry, the test sets are not accurate at all and the
"misunderstanding" will
get eventually settled.

ECSTASY HAS DRAMATIC EFFECT ON PARKINSON'S SYMPTOMS
Ecstasy is being hailed as the key to better treatments for the
Parkinson's
disease, marking a complete turnaround from a few weeks ago when
ecstasy was
condemned for causing the disease.
New animal studies have confirmed anecdotal reports that ecstasy
can
dramatically curb the uncontrollable arm and leg movements that plague
so
many people with Parkinson's. But the finding may be of little
immediate
help to sufferers.
The researchers are not calling for patients to be given legal
supplies of
ecstasy (MDMA). Instead, they want to look for related drugs with the
same
beneficial effects. And patients are being warned against trying MDMA
for
themselves. "It's impure, illegal and dangerous," says
Robert Meadowcroft,
policy director of Britain's Parkinson's Disease Society.

Subject: Re: [ibogaine] after the detox
Status:
Dear Art ( arthernandez1999@...),
I have read and reread your post to Patrick. I am VERY NEW on this
web
site, and certainly claim NO EXPERTISE in the matters, however I
have
actively lurked on the predecessor board for 4-5 years. My knowledge
was
limited to what I have read on this and other Web Sites pertaining to
this
form of treatment, until 2 weeks ago. In the previous week I had
been
through the low point of my Son's ten year addiction. He jumped out
a
window 2 1/2 stories above ground level, had two Grand Mal
Seizures,
numerous Petit Mal seizures, drove me down Interstate 95 at 110 MPH
at
night in the driving rain and announced that he was going to kill both
of
us, (I had to remove the keys three times from the ignition, but
reinserted
them each time when it became evident that he had no steering and
very
limited brakes.) When I asked if he had been taking his medicines he
took a
handful of his antidepressant and swallowed them. I could go on, but
I
think you get the picture. I was ABSOLUTELY certain that if something
was
not done Quickly, I would loose him, as he repeatedly told me he
wanted to
die and intended to accomplish same.
I do not cut and
paste in replys as the redundancy seems to cloud
the response, I however shall attempt to reply to the questions that I
can
now answer.
Understand that being of
exceptional intelligence is a liability in
life, as much as an asset. (That is another subject.)
I had spoken to my Son about Ibogaine many times and he rejected the
idea
summarily. When a friend of his mentioned it he seemed responsive
initially
and then NIXED the idea, saying that he was opposed to mind altering
drugs.
He was using 12-20 bags of heroin a day and was on 130 MG of
methadone
daily, cocaine, Benzos, and had, in the past, used large
quantitys of LSD.
The 130 MG of methadone a day is enough to preclude him from most if
not
all detox/rehab programs in this country. He has been to 9 of them
plus we
have done some home detoxes as well. He is diagnosed as Bi-Polar,
Personality Disorder Antisocial and NOS, Panic Disorder,
Obsesive/Compulsive and more from three different Institutions, as
well as
two additional court ordered evaluations.
Without getting into who
did what, two pair of handcuffs were
acquired and utilized, withdrawal set in and he asked for the
treatment, as
he was told that it would ameliorate the withdrawal symptoms. He got
the
treatment according to protocall and is NOT USING illicit drugs, and
claims
that he suffered NO WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS, says his drug use is behind
him
and is mad as hell at me.
I have never used illicit
substances, my son took his first college
classes when he was 10 years old at UVA Summer session in
Charlottsville
Va, and got nothing less than an A for a grade. The State of
Virginia
solicited and paid for this as part of an experiment. I was
opposed to
this, but my wife was not, and she accepted when it was offered the
second
time while I was on a trip, working away from home.
There are many
compassionate people on this Board, and they have
lived it instead of observed it, so I am just one voice in the
wilderness,
but I KNOW IT WORKS, and nothing in the past has. He has used the
first day
out of programs, and out of jail, hell, he has been caught using
in
programs. I have been told that this treatment RESETS THE BRAIN and
I
believe it.
IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are protocalls for this
treatment that include EKG, and liver function, they MUST be followed.
Test
Dosing for tolerance is also IMPERATIVE. Get a Guide to get through
this.
This is not a walk in the park for the patient nor the guide. My
observation is that there is no risk of addiction to this treatment as
it
is REVULSIVE as well as EFFECTIVE. I.E some vomiting, numerous
bowl
function misfires, a few days of musical bathrooms, beds,
bedrooms, stairs,
and sofas. There is a necessity for followthrough after treatment.
If
restraint is necessary to save your Son, use it, however once the
treatment
starts be as compassionate as can be and then some. You do not want
him so
angry that he will try to prove to you that the treatment will not
work,
and compassion helps people find the LIGHT I had to decide if I
was
concerned for my own consequences, or saving my sons life, I chose
the
latter with trepidation. HAVE PLENTY OF HELP AND MAKE SURE THAT NO
ONE
AROUND CAN MAKE ANY OUTSIDE CALLS (911) LIKE GIRLFRIENDS of his. Do
NOT
Quit on your Son, Jail only gives you a rest, it does not heal your
Son.

Please subscribe to new MMM email list. Public archive still
open.
The public MMM email list at Yahoo Groups now requires people to
subscribe
in order to post messages to the list and the public archive. For
a few
weeks I set it up so that non-members could also send in email
messages to
the list. That was to help people send in MMM rally reports. It
worked.
The archive also got some spam too. That was deleted. But people
should
keep sending in MMM-related stuff. Just subscribe first.
The MMM message archive itself is still public and accessible to
anybody:

*MMM (Million Marijuana March) and Global Cannabis Action. Marches
and
rallies, the first Saturday in May of each year. Worldwide (since
1999).
May 3 2003, May 4 2002. May 5, 2001. May 6, 2000. May 1, 1999.
Over 200
cities so far ... and counting!!! Other multi-city cannabis and
drug
reform events are covered, too. Email list public archive for
event info,
ideas, MMM 2002 rally reports, photo attachments, links, HTML web
pages,
etc.. Also, Dana Beal's most recent messages include the
latest,
continually-revised, compilation of MMM 2003 cities, contacts,
and rally
info. After subscribing to this Yahoo Group email list, please
use
cannabisaction@yahoogroups.com for sending in messages. On
the homepage
there are links to archived messages, and to web pages with even more
MMM
links, info, and rally report compilations online.
