NoteTab counts 111 cities in the paragraph-per-city list. Kristiansand and Lausanne are in the single-line-per-city list, but they are not in the paragraph-per-city list.

So far, 113  Cities are Signed up for 2004 .

MAYDAY IS JAY-DAY!
(Next year, the first Saturday of May falls on May 1. We are recommending Sunday, May 2 or Monday May 3 in cities where there is significant conflict with other local events--or as a rain date. Of course, we understand that some schools have to do it on 4/20 because their school year is over by May, and that some northern cities have to do it a little later in May...)

Help us reach our goal of 300 cities worldwide!

To get on the poster for 2004--"Mayday is Jay Day"--check yr contact info and email me back telling me to add yr city to the List at the top of this email. By the way, I lost about three weeks email not long after last year's event, and have had intermittent email service since that time.. Did anything happen on the first Saturday of May in your area? Numbers? Arrests? Media? Anything of interest happen, etc?

You can also call me at 212-677-4899--or leave a message on 212-677-7180.

Dana/cnw
P.S.: We are also interested in adding to our list of prestigious endorsers, which consists of pot activists well-known in their city or country. We need a name and phone number for each. Any suggestions?

P.P.S: We need on average $100 for each affiliate to print  and ship this year's poster.  If you can't send it, we have to raise it somewhere else.

HELP RAISE MONEY FOR THE MILLION MARIJUANA MARCH--BOOK A YIPPIE SPEAKER!

Recently we wrote you that we need on average $100 for each affiliate to print  and ship this year's poster--and that if you can't send it, we have to raise it somewhere else.

You can help. Go to http://www.yippiespeakers.com  Here's the good news: 20% of all speaker fees go to printing and operating expenses for the MMM 2004. (If you can get me booked personally it's 100%.)
Some of these speakers like Grace Slick and Hunter Thompson get $25,000 just for appearing at yr local university! (Some like Dennis Peron are available for a few thousand) Your local group gets 4% finders' fee.

What we need you to do is contact yr local on-campus activists and have them agitate their student affairs folks in charge of outside speakers  (or equivalent) to book some of our speakers. It's important to clarify that we are NOT  asking them to get this from the budget of their NORML or SSDP chapter, but from the campus office that books outside speakers. (At Kent State they call it the Office of Student Life, and they paid me $4,000 for a three hour appearance, which went straight to the printer.)

It's a good year for it. Things have come full-circle for Yippie! We have all the elements--an illegitimate  Republican President everyone hates at home, a quagmire war abroad--for the first time  since the '70's. And best of all, even though all our speakers support cannabis and oppose the drug war, they are Yippie, not legalization speakers, so you won't have to deal with demands from the university administration that you find some anti-drug speaker for "Balance" or you don't get the booking. (Since we are moving toward protests against the Republican Convention in NYC next August, to be fair they'd have to demand an opponent of protests, period, which is absurd.)

If you have a hot prospect,  email me right back; but since  about half of everything sent to this address "bounces", be sure to also put in a call to the speakers bureau at 212-677-7180, and leave a message if no one picks up.

Subject: Professor Callaway Australia Initiated Hemp foods petition etc

The above site has a hempfoods petition and much useful hempseed info. The one thing you can EASILY do is sign the petition. THEY ALL COUNT IN THE LONGTERM.
TV 3 may be newsworthy re hemp in next few days.
Right on cue the Canadians are rubbing their good sense in. GO CANADA http://www.globalhemp.com/News/2004/January/breakfast_brainfood.php

Professor Jace Callaway - will form brief submission.
To whom this may concern;
The are no logical, scientific reasons to lower the level of THC in hemp. It is already low enough to ensure against practical diversion towards illegal drug use. Aside from political concerns, there are no compelling reasons to reduce or eliminate THC from hempseed food products for the sake of consumer health. Contrary to popular beliefs, neither THC nor marijuana are associated with pathological disorders, and over 30 years of scientific studies have failed to prove toxicity, even at unreasonably high levels ingestion. In fact, after decades of looking for toxicity, scientific researchers have only found useful medicines from Cannabis.
Clearly, the tiny levels of THC in hemp and hempseed products are being used as a political excuse to keep this healthy potential from moving forward. All foods have some potential toxicity, and it would be a shame for New Zealand authorities to act like Americans in the United States by restricting the cultivation of hemp and the use of food products made from hempseed.
However, if such arguments are to be aired in a debate on their merits, then they must be supported by results from independent scientific studies. Unfortunately, for the sake of such arguments, results of toxicity from hemp or hempseed foods do not exist. This not because such studies have not been carried out. This is because the putative toxicity of hemp and hempseed foods does not exist beyond a level found with other common foods.
Sincerely,
Jace Callaway, Ph.D.

Cannabis Festival Organiser found Not Guilty

Shane Collins, Cannabis Carnival Licensee and Green Party London Assembly candidate, was found not guilty at Tower Bridge Magistrates Court today.

The charge was brought over licensing violations at the Cannabis Carnival held on 4th May 2003 at Brockwell Park, Brixton.   The Council allege a sound system was played for 85 seconds after the licence permitting it had ended.

Judge Ann Sawetz hearing the case said 'one does wonder why the prosecution was bought to court' and commended Mr Collins for the way the festival was organised.  She said Mr Collins and the production team 'ran a very tight ship' and it was 'obvious he wanted to things properly and abide by the licensing conditions.'

Shane Collins said, Debt ridden Lambeth Council brought this petty prosecution for a minor infringement of the licensing law pertaining to the festival.  We estimate this court case has cost taxpayers in the region of £30,000.

Jenny Jones, Green Deputy Mayor of London said, I am delighted that the Judge took the sensible view and found Shane not guilty.  This event is about getting dealers off the streets and into cannabis cafes and separating supply of cannabis from heroin and crack. Scores of people worked, unpaid, for six months to bring this event together.  In any sane society Shane and others would be applauded for their efforts.

The free event, which was attended by 10 - 15,000 people, was one of 318 happening on the same day around the world.  The organisers will be putting on the 6th annual march next 8th May 2004 and hopefully a free festival as well.

Shane Collins concluded,  "This was a free event to protest at the continued prohibition of one of natures most useful plants and a call for the huge trade in cannabis to be regulated and legalised.  Reclassification will simply ensure this trade remains in 'criminal' hands where disputes get settled violently and not through the small claims court. The 6th Annual march and festival to re-legalise cannabis will go ahead on Saturday 8th May 2004.

Notes to the Editor.
1 Maximum sentence for the licensing violations is 6 months prison and £20,000 fine.
2. In 2003 Cannabis Marches took place in 318 cities world wide and are again planned for May 8th 2004.
3. The 1997 UN Drug Report put the trade in illicit drugs as the third largest in the world after oil and arms.
4. The Home Office estimates the trade in UK Cannbais to be £5b each year.

Garfunkel Busted for Pot Possession ALISON M. ROSEN, People
From: phatjbp@... AP 22 Jan 2004
Garfunkel had a small amount of marijuana in his jacket pocket
when police  stopped his limo Saturday.

Parsley, sage, rosemary and ... reefer?

Art Garfunkel, 62, one half of the legendary singing duo Simon and Garfunkel,  was
charged with marijuana possession after police pulled over his limo for  speeding in
upstate New York on Saturday, according to published reports. The  marijuana was found
in his jacket pocket, police said.

Garfunkel, who was riding alone, was stopped by state troopers 55 miles  southwest of
Albany in Hurley, N.Y., at around 12:20 p.m., reports the Daily  Freeman of Kingston.
Police say they smelled marijuana after approaching the limo.

State police Capt. Louis Babaria Jr. said the trooper who stopped Garfunkel  didn't
know why the singer was in Ulster County. He also didn't know who  Garfunkel was at the
time, despite Garfunkel telling him he was a celebrity.

Garfunkel faces a $100 fine, unless he's had a conviction in the last three  years,
which police didn't comment on, the Associated Press reports. He was  given the option
of appearing in court Jan. 28, responding by mail or having a  lawyer appear for him.

Garfunkel recently reunited with singing and writing partner Paul Simon and  the two
completed a U.S. concert tour, which was their first in 20 years. The 1960s duo, famous
for such songs as "The Sounds of Silence," "Mrs. Robinson"  and "Old Friends," have
been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

State Pot Prosecution Now a Federal Case By Jeff Chorney
Source: Recorder January 21, 2004
Medical marijuana advocates are accusing state and federal lawyers of vindictive
prosecution for arresting two drug defendants on federal charges while they sat in a
Tehama County, Calif., courthouse.  The proponents say it's another example of the feds
meddling in a case that would have been dismissed under the California medical
marijuana law. Prosecutors counter that the amount of dope warrants federal
involvement.

Pot club hosts open house for politicians

Tuesday, January 20, 2004 -  By Tad Whitaker

With several important elections coming up, Lynnette Shaw opened the doors of the Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana in Fairfax yesterday so politicians running for local and national offices could get a first-hand look at her operation.

Jack Gibson, candidate for Superior Court judge, Louis Nuyens, running for the Board of Supervisors in District Four, and Libertarian U.S. Senate candidate Jim Gray met with patients, saw the distribution of medication and got a rundown on how the clinic has continued to operate with the town's permission since 1996.

"It was satisfying to see that they want to keep it within the law," Gibson said afterward.

Shaw, who led an unsuccessful recall drive against District Attorney Paula Kamena in 2000 and ran for Marin Healthcare District Director in 2002, said she invited a few other candidates - including Marin Superior Court Judge Michael Dufficy - who didn't show up. But Shaw said yesterday's turnout was a success because the candidates walked away with positive things to say about the clinic and a new perspective on medical marijuana.

"It's clean and well-organized," said Nuyens, who helped draft the original medical marijuana identification card and other forms used at Marin Alliance. "It's amazing she's still open."

Shaw said Gray - an Orange County Superior Court judge on a one-year leave of absence who advocates full legalization of marijuana for adults - initiated the walkthrough back in November because his only experience with marijuana was evidence in court. She said he asked patients how long marijuana lasts, what they have to do to buy it and even got to hold a bag of it.

"He was fascinated by it," she said.

During a public question and answer session afterward, Gray said he plans to use Shaw and Marin Alliance on the campaign trail as proof that marijuana can be managed effectively to provide comfort to people.

"I view her as the Mother Theresa of Marin," he said.

Shaw said she wasn't worried about inviting the candidates because the clinic sticks to the rules - including regular audits required by the town and strict enforcement about who can and can't buy.

In fact, she said she was excited to show off the clinic's expanded offerings, including 15 different types of smokeable marijuana, an express line and an extended selection of foods such as peanut butter and jelly.

"It's called Smoker's instead of Smucker's," she said of the jelly. "It's definitely got a punch to it."

Shaw said the patients and staff are extremely concerned about their privacy so, after consulting with them, she decided to do a private tour for the candidates rather than invite the public. Everyone understood the importance of showing the clinic in a positive light, but not everyone wanted to participate, she said.

"This is the first time we opened the door and said 'C'mon in,'" she said. "Most patients don't like to talk about their problems."

As for big-name politicians, Shaw said she has invited Democratic U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer of Greenbrae and U.S. Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Petaluma, but neither has come for a visit. Woolsey never fails to send a handwritten note saying why she can't make it, but Boxer always sends a form letter, she said.

"I'm sure it's due to her (Woolsey's) insane schedule," Shaw said. "But I wish Boxer would pay attention to us."

Shaw said she would consider tours for nearly any politician because she wants them to understand that Marin Alliance is a legitimate operation that provides a legitimate function. So who is her most sought-after guest?

"Arnold Schwarzenegger," Shaw said. "I really want the governor to come by and see our system."

Re: Kerry, Skull & Bones

Kerry was interviewed a few months ago on a major TV news mag
program during the time of publicity about the book on skull and
bones society exposing their world including reference to their
having Geronimo's bones in their vault.  The interviewer got an
acknowledgement from Kerry that he was a member and tried
to probe him about the society and Kerry with straight face said
he couldn't talk about it because it was secret.  After a couple of
probes the interviewer gave up with a look on his face like "what
can I say"?

Does this add any new dimension to the "Republican crossover
vote" and the "Kerry victory" in Iowa?  If the Republicans were
afraid of Dean becoming the nominee, they wouldn't organize
such a campaign to scuttle him in Iowa by having fellow Bush
Yale S&B man Kerry come out ahead in Iowa to deflate Dean
momentum, would they?  I mean those republicans wouldn't even
think of such a "political strategy" in the first "primary state"
would they?

Dennis could take up this issue by probing in debates on
Skull and Bones with Kerry and any other Demo candidates
who are known as skull-boners as a point of morality by asking
all candidates "if it's true that Skull and Bones has Gernomino's
bones, don't you think they should give them back?   Wouldn't
you say any president or presidential candidate who favors
stealing and keeping human remains away from their descendants
who want to rebury them, isn't that immoral?"   This is a test of
truthfulness and morality which should be brought out in debates
and to the press.  It can more easily be done because both
Bush and Kerry are members of this club so it will not be seen
as a partisan attack on Bush but a question of viewing and
understanding candidates' moral and ethical values and levels
of truthfulness -- all usually covered up but with Dennis needs
to see the light of day to Light Up America with the light of the
truth.

How about folks inputting this issue to the Associated Press
via below webform and ask them to track this issue during
the campaign as an important issue relating to truthfulness
and ethics and morality dimensions of the candidates?

Associated Press Campaign coverage survey

As the election 2004 season begins, we invite you to help determine what
issues we should address in our political coverage. We need to ask you a
few, simple questions about what issues are most important to you.

To fill out the short survey, please go to this Associated Press
Managing Editors Web site:  http://www.apme-credibility.org/survey

The Star newsroom has joined a nationwide network of newsrooms asking
these same questions in about 35 cities and towns across the country.
So, not only will your answers help us guide coverage in our newsroom,
but they will be used as part of a nationwide survey of readers that
could help guide coverage on a national scale.

Your responses might be used in stories produced for either a local or
national audience, so we ask that you provide contact information (which
might be used by reporters but not otherwise shared with anyone.)

As the campaign season progresses, and new issues arise both nationally
and locally, we'll be in touch with readers again to ask more specific
questions.

This project is part of APME's Credibility Roundtables Project, which
works to encourage communication and build trust between journalists and
the public. We need your support for this project to succeed.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about this process,
please let me know. Thank you so much for participating in this
important project.

What Happens Without The Methadone Emergency Database Project

In the past 2 years there have been at least 3 major emergencies, where
despite the "emergencies plans" called for in the Accreditation Guidelines
patients were left for between 1 and 3 days without medication. The Presidents Day
Storm where at least 9 programs failed to open in the Mid Atlantic states, the
east coast blackout, and the recent northeaster where hundreds of patients in
Boston were left without medication despite repeated warnings about severe
weather.

NAMA is aware that many patients were forced to resort to heroin during those
emergencies. There is no way to tell the ultimate impact that this had on
patients being forced into using again.  Whatever the effects they can't be good.

If an emergency database were available those patients could have gone to any
program, and eventually any emergency room, to get their medicine.

What Should Happen Next?

The next stage is just a demonstration project and admittedly it will be
several years before all the kinks are ironed out and it is ready to go national.
But this is the start of a strategy to insure that ALL patients are able to
get their medication no matter the crisis. By not being funded the project will
be delayed further and we can't wait another thirty-five years.

NAMA believes that this project is important and should take precedence over
other projects. We encourage all advocates, methadone patients, friends and
family of methadone patients and all concerned individuals to contact Mr. Curie
of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and
Dr. Clark of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) and tell them
that you care about the dignity of methadone patients and encourage them to fund
the Methadone Emergency Database Project.

The email links for the esteemed gentlemen mentioned are listed below:

Please e-mail them today and tell them you support the Methadone Emergency
Database Project. Ask your friends and family to do the same.

Dear Callie,

I only wish I had the strength two work harder.  The two people who are
really dedicating their lives to helping methadone patients are NAMA's president,
Joycelyn S. Woods and NAMA's Vice President, Walter Ginter.
