Golisano for Governor

Sir:
Regarding the matter I mentioned in our brief phone conversation of
last Sunday, I note that Tom Golisano is also a proponent of treatment
instead of incarceration for drug addicts. Like most Americans,
however, he is probably not aware that a major breakthrough in the
treatment of drug dependency has occured at Albany Medical College,
where Dr. Stanley Glick has patented a safer form of Ibogaine
called 18-MC.
This rainforest alkaloid has been reported to act as an addiction
interrupter across a wide spectrum of abused substances, legal and
illegal, in more more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers. A
unique effect is the simultaneous loss of multiple addictions--for
example opiates, meth-amphetamine, crack, alcohol and
cigarettes--after as little as a single treatment.
Ibogaine is the first pharmacotherapy where, when the treatment wears
off, addicts are free of both physical withdrawal and psychological
craving. And where opioid maintenance (methadone) or blockers
(naltrexone) fail to address the underlying dopaminergic disorder
(craving), re-treatment with Ibogaine (should uncontrollable cravings
re-cur, or in the event or relapse) is safe and easy.
.
With Ibogaine, the acute phase that requires bed-rest takes just two
days. Even with a period to keep them under observation in case you
have to administer another, smaller dose after 4 to 6 days for
residual cravings, folks can be back at work in just under two weeks.
In short, the only reason there's currently a shortage of treatment
beds for addicts is that we're not using the latest technology to cut
the length of inpatient treatment.
We feel that Tom's courageous stands regarding medical marijuana and
the Rockefeller drug laws deserve support. Both because he is a
proponent of treatment, and to immunize the campaign against the
inevitable counter-charges that these positions somehow foster drugs
and addiction, we think a campaign appearance at Stan Glick's lab in
Albany would be a logical extension of his commitment to bring new
solutions--not to mention the jobs and millions of dollars of
development money involved--to the people of New York.

VIEW OF JUSTICE FROM PATRIQUEN'S SIDE OF THE FENCE
Unfortunately, my access to the print media is severely limited, but I
have
noticed in The Herald over the past several weeks articles,
editorial
comments and reader views on my medical dilemma.
I'd like to give my view from this side of the fence.
Following a motor vehicle accident in 1999, I found myself with a
very
painful disability. Our family physician and a number of specialists
spent
a great deal of time and testing to come up with the correct
diagnosis and
treatment plan.
Initial drug treatments ranged from Advil at the beginning to huge
daily
doses of powerful narcotics, to which I became physically dependent,
toward
the end.

Ottawa probes marijuana's effect on pain
First clinical trial to follow 32 patients over eight weeks
Tom Arnold
National Post
Thursday, October 10, 2002
The federal government is putting up $840,000 for
Canada's first clinical study into whether marijuana
use can help ease pain.
The Community Research Initiative of Toronto and St.
Michael's Hospital in Toronto are to begin evaluating
the therapeutic effects of smoked cannabis in HIV/AIDS.
In the clinical trial, 32 patients will be closely
examined over eight weeks to test the safety of
short-term exposure to different strengths of cannabis,
and how cannabis interacts with HIV medications. The
analysis will also include the effect of smoked marijuana
on nausea, pain, mood and neuro-cognitive function.
The results of the study will help determine the design of
a
larger, multi-centre, clinical trial across the country. It is
also
important because Anne McLellan, the federal Health
Minister,
has said she will not proceed with medicinal legalization
without clinical trials looking at the plant's
effectiveness.
"There is so little good concrete scientific data about
the
potential benefits or effects of smoked cannabis in a number
of
illnesses, including HIV and AIDS," said Kevin Gough,
an
infectious diseases specialist who will act as the study's
principal investigator.
"HIV itself, the disease, and the medications we use to
treat
it, produce a number of side effects, including loss of
appetite,
nausea, and pain. Other diseases like cancer and multiple
sclerosis can also lead to similar symptoms that might
benefit
from smoked cannabis, but the studies aren't there.
"This is the first trial in Canada to be looking at cannabis
in
any medical context," added Dr. Gough, who is also
medical
director of HIV services at St. Michael's Hospital in
Toronto.
For those suffering from HIV or AIDS, loss of appetite and
weight loss can be life threatening, said Derek Thaczuk,
former
chairman of the board of directors of the Community
Research
Initiative of Toronto, an organization dedicated to research
on
HIV and AIDS.
"There is plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest that
smoking marijuana increases people's appetite and therefore
helps them gain weight," he said. "What we're doing
with this
study is subjecting it to some scientific rigour and trying to
get
quantitative answers to the question of 'Can smoked
cannabis
help with this condition and if so, how much?' "
The marijuana has been imported from the U.S. government's
National Institutes of Drug Abuse. The organization grows
its
own marijuana on a farm in Mississippi. The Canadian
research
team purchased 500 grams for the research project.
Mr. Thaczuk, who chairs the Toronto research initiative's
scientific committee, said work on the study has been
carried
out for two years with Health Canada, and the scientific
and
HIV/AIDS communities.
The study is based on a method known as a
placebo-controlled crossover design. This means all
participants will receive marijuana containing four
different
strengths of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at different times,
including a placebo. Each patient will smoke the various
forms
of the drug for a week, monitoring their usage, pain level
and
weight. They will remain marijuana-free for the next week,
but
still self-monitoring.
Although they will be smoking medicinal pot in their own
homes
whenever they choose, they will undergo a battery of tests
as
an in-patient at a clinic once a week.
THC is the component of cannabis known to cause the
"high"
people experience. THC is also believed responsible for the
drug's potential medical benefits, such as appetite
stimulation.
The study is expected to be completed within one year.
The federal government has funded another study, one in
which researchers at McGill University will research
the
therapeutic effects of marijuana on neurological pain. The
$235,000 project is to get underway this fall.
In August, Ms. McLellan prompted applause when she told
doctors at a meeting of the Canadian Medical Association in
New Brunswick that she was uncomfortable with people
smoking pot to relieve pain and that the government would
not
look at distributing medicinal marijuana before it does
clinical
drug trials.
Ms. McLellan's comments appeared to contradict her
predecessor Allan Rock, who had suggested he was looking at
easing up on legal access to the drug as medicine. However,
she insisted she was not backing away from the government's
plan to distribute marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Like any other drug, she said, the safety, efficacy and
long-term effects of marijuana must be studied before
approval. Canadian doctors have led a powerful lobby
against
prescribing pot as medicine, arguing it has not been tested
for
safety or efficacy.

Is the
President Nuts?
Diagnosing Dubya
by CAROL WOLMAN,
M.D.
Many people, inside and especially outside
this country, believe that the American president is nuts, and is
taking the world on a suicidal path. As a board-certified
psychiatrist, I feel it's my duty to share my understanding of his
psychopathology. He's a complicated man, under tremendous pressure
from both his family/junta, and from the world at large. So the
following is offered with humility and questioning, in the form of a
differential diagnosis.
From the Freudian point of view:
Dubya may be acting out a classical Oedipal
drama--overcome Daddy to get Mommy. By deposing Saddam, when his
father did not, he may want to prove himself more worthy of his
mother's love. His rationale that he is avenging the assassination
attempt on George, Sr., may be a reaction formation- his way of hiding
the true motive from himself.
From the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Fourth
Edition:
Antisocial Personality
Disorder--301.7
There is a pervasive pattern of disregard
for and violation of the rights of others since age 15 years as
indicated by at least three of the following: 1) failure to conform to
social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by
repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest; 2)
deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or
conning others for personal profit or pleasure; 5) reckless disregard
for safety of self or others; 7) lack of remorse by being indifferent
to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated or stolen from others.
Another possibility from DSM IV:
Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly
Multiple Personality Disorder) 300.14
A) The presence of two or more distinct
identities, each with its own enduring pattern of perceiving, relating
to and thinking about the environment and self.
B) At least two of these identities or
personality states recurrently take control of the person's
behavior.
This disorder is typical of people raised by satanic cults, and might
explain how Dubya can think of himself as a born-again Christian and
yet worship money, oil and profit, and sanction killing thousands of
innocent Iraqi and Afghani children.
Another possibility:
Narcissistic personality disorder
301.81
1) has a grandiose sense of
self-importance- exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be
recognized as superior without commensurate
achievements;
2) in preoccupied with fantasies of
unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty or ideal
love;
3) believes that he or she is
"special" and unique and can only be understood by, or
should associate with, other special or
high-status people;
4) requires excessive
admiration;
5) has a sense of entitlement- unreasonable
expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance
with his or her
expectations;
6) is interpersonally
exploitative;
7) lacks empathy, is unwilling to recognize
or identify with the feelings and needs of others;
9) shows arrogant, haughty behavior or
attitudes.
This set of characteristics may describe
Rumsfeld and Cheney better than Dubya.
Or, for those who feel that he's just a puppet for
others:
Dependent Personality Disorder
301.6
1) has difficulty making everyday decisions
without an excessive amount of advice and reassurance from
others;
2) needs others to assume responsibility
for most major areas of his life;
3) has difficulty expressing disagreement
with others because of fear of loss of support or
approval;
4) has difficulty initiating projects or
doing things on his own because of a lack of self-confidence in
judgment or abilities.
5. goes to excessive lengths to obtain
nurturance and support from others, to the point of doing things that
are unpleasant.
From a Jungian point of view:
Dubya may be identifying with an archetype
(as Hitler did with the ubermensch)--something out of Revelations,
perhaps, whereby he sees himself as an instrument of God's will to
bring about Armageddon.

MAN FACES DRUG CHARGES OVER SOUTH AMERICAN JUNGLE VINES
ATLANTA (AP) -- A man from Peru faces federal drug charges for
importing
jungle vines and leaves that he planned to make into tea for a
religious
ceremony.
Alan Thomas Shoemaker said he uses the Peruvian jungle vine ayahuasca
and
huambisa leaves to make a bitter, rust-colored tea that is part
purgative
and part-hallucinogen.
South American shamans use the tea to heal the sick, bring contact
with
spirits and divine the future. Shoemaker said it's part of a
religious
ritual that has been used for centuries by Amazon Indians.
But federal prosecutors in Atlanta say the tea violates federal drug
laws
because it contains the hallucinogen DMT, an illegal controlled
substance.
Because Shoemaker imported the vines and leaves into Atlanta, he has
been
indicted for illegal drug importation and possession.

Howard ,
this is the story those Africans English
told me ,
About 18 months ago my boyfriend and I went to the gabon in
search of some
Iboga with all the money and belongings we had.
We met some people who hurriedly put us through a very traumatic
initiation
experience without the proper preparation.Afterwhich they relieved us
of all
the money we had .We had to return to england broken, broke and
dejected with
just a little Iboga to show for it all.
If you can help in anyway we would sincerely appreciate it.
Yours truly,
....
The West Africans people told me that the
kolanut was used in all ceremonies
when a baby is born everyone get to chew a
little kolanut to bring peace in house ,
it was used as Alcohol in our culture for
celebration and festivals. to be able to stay awake and dance all
night .
the healers used it in their healing
ceremonies ,
So I got some kolanut and I have tried it
, personally if I would have to choose between benzo's or
Kolanut
I would prefer the kolanut because it has
more then one benefit, the only problem I have with it is that I don't
know enough to dose other people who would like to use it for healing
, so it will take me a while to tune to that energy
and try it , but as you know each of us have
different reaction to Iboga /ibogaine and I guess It would be
the same
with this kolanut ,and of course each nut
isn't the same , this isn't easy for people who like to take
pills .however
there is no attachment to be worried about ,It
isn't addictive and has no side effects only if used too much
.
those two who were ripped off by the bwiti's
are using iboga everyday a small dose ,
and they are doing much better now , It took
them more then a year to find me,now is the nightmare
over
as they said .
It also make me sad to know that the bwiti
people are not focused on the initiation but on
getting
someone stuff while they are tripping
.
all the best,
Sara

Please subscribe to new MMM email list. Public archive still
open.
The public MMM email list at Yahoo Groups now requires people to
subscribe
in order to post messages to the list and the public archive. For
a few
weeks I set it up so that non-members could also send in email
messages to
the list. That was to help people send in MMM rally reports. It
worked.
The archive also got some spam too. That was deleted. But people
should
keep sending in MMM-related stuff. Just subscribe first.
The MMM message archive itself is still public and accessible to
anybody:
