Ohio Cannabis Society to conduct Rally and March in Dayton, Ohio!
Stop the Casualties of the Marijuana War!

On September 27th the Preble County SWAT team executed a search warrant at the residence of Clayton Helriggle, 23, of Lewisburg, Ohio.  Just minutes into the drug raid Clayton Helriggle lay dying in the arms of his friend from a shotgun blast to the chest from a SWAT team member's weapon.  Later in the day sheriff deputies found one ounce of marijuana.

The Ohio Cannabis Society, feeling that it has a moral obligation to inform the public of the harms of marijuana's prohibition, will hold a rally and march  October 19, 2002.  The rally will start at noon on Dave Hall Plaza at Main St. and E. Fifth St. in downtown Dayton, Ohio.

Meet John Hartman director of the Ohio Cannabis Society, and Cher Neufer president of North Ohio NORML.  Music by Uncle Sam's Dream Machine.  The public is invited to attend.

The march on the Montgomery County Court House will begin at 4pm and a benefit party will follow from 6 to 9pm at a local lounge.

The death of Clayton Helriggle is a tragic example of a government policy gone wrong.  When the prohibition is worse than the crime it is intended to prohibit, it is  time to end the prohibition,  says John Hartman, director of the Ohio Cannabis Society.

The Ohio Cannabis Society has promoted this event with print ads, radio ads and grassroots networking and expects a large crowd.

The Ohio Cannabis Society has held numerous rallies.  Its annual event in Cleveland Ohio titled the Million Marijuana March regularly draws 2,000 marchers.

On Thursday, 10/10/2002 at 3pm the ruling Social Democratic Party (SPD) and
the Greens will meet to debate their drug policies for the next four years,
amongst other subjects. Together they successfully defended a majority of
seats in the German Federal Parliament in elections on 22 September. The
pro-legalisation Greens came out as the main winner of the election, while
the SPD lost some seats. This could tilt the balance of power towards the
greens, who unsuccessfully had demanded a liberalisation of cannabis laws
after the previous election.

Voices from within the SPD have hinted recently that their party would be
prepared to decriminalise possession of up to 30g of cannabis for personal
use. The youth wing of the Green party ran a high profile legalisation
campaign before the election, which resulted in the Greens winning their
best result ever. One could say the Greens have staked their reputation on
getting some progress on the matter this time.

PADDICK BACKERS ANGRY AT MET MOVE

The Metropolitan police has officially closed the door on Brian Paddick
returning to his job as commander of Lambeth by appointing him to another
post and signalling that he will not be able to return to the south London
borough even if he is cleared of allegations that he smoked cannabis, the
Guardian has learned.

The move to a less high profile position in a new department was sanctioned
by the Metropolitan police commissioner, Sir John Stevens, and his deputy,
Ian Blair.

Their decision will infuriate Mr Paddick's supporters because it pre-empts
the findings of the crown prosecution service, which is expected to
announce within 48 hours that the officer who pioneered the "softly softly"
drugs strategy will not face criminal charges relating to claims in a "kiss
and tell" story published in a Sunday tabloid.

ST. MIKE'S STUDY PROBES ROLE OF MEDICAL POT

First Canadian trial will focus on HIV/AIDS patients

(CP) - Will marijuana-induced munchies help people with HIV and AIDS combat
nausea and avoid the weight-loss that the disease brings on? Researchers in
Toronto are hoping to find out.

Canada's first government-sponsored trial of medicinal marijuana in
HIV/AIDS officially started on Wednesday, led by researchers from St.
Michael's Hospital and the Community Research Initiative of Toronto.

"I think the time is right to look at this," said principal investigator
Dr. Kevin Gough, medical director of HIV services at the hospital.

"Let's find out what role, if any, that smoked cannabis has in, not only
HIV and AIDS, but other medical illnesses as well."

PATIENT NOT ALLOWED TO USE HIS MEDICINE

San Diego - Steve McWilliams of Shelter From the Storm was arrested by
the DEA this morning, and released on bond after his arraignment this
afternoon. He has been charged with 2 counts of cultivation: 448 plants
from a bust in 1999, and 25 plants from another bust last week.

His conditions for release are to stay in California, and to not use
cannabis, although he is a legal medical cannabis patient.

San Jose cops off DEA squad
Chief doesn't want them raiding pot clubs

Mark Simon   Thursday, October 10, 2002

San Jose Police Chief William Lansdowne has yanked his officers off the Drug Enforcement Administration task force that raided a Santa Cruz medicinal marijuana club a month ago.

Lansdowne said his four officers and one sergeant have better things to do - - such as tackle the methamphetamine epidemic -- than harass local pot clubs, which are operating within state law.

"I think the priorities are out of sync at the federal level," said Lansdowne, who said he agrees the state's voters made the right decision in legalizing marijuana for medical use under regulated circumstances.

"The problem in California right now is methamphetamines, not medical marijuana."

Lansdowne said the DEA-led raid put his officers in the middle of a "clear conflict" between state and federal law.

In 1996, California voters approved Proposition 215, which permits local governments to regulate distribution of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Federal law outlaws marijuana use in any manner.

The federal government has argued -- and the argument has been upheld in federal court -- that U.S. marijuana laws override state or local ordinances.

A little more than a month ago, an armed and DEA-led task force raided the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana in Santa Cruz, seizing 167 plants and arresting founders Mike and Valerie Corral.

WAMM has been operating since 1996 under the supervision and approval of city, county and local law enforcement officials. WAMM grows its own marijuana organically on its own farm.

"It's unfair to put our officers in a position of deciding how they're going to enforce a law that's in conflict with local law," Lansdowne said.

The San Jose officers had been assigned to the DEA's High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area task force, a unit that also included personnel from the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the FBI and the Santa Clara County sheriff's office.

DEA spokesman Rich Meyer would not disclose the size of the task force. A sheriff's spokesman said Santa Clara County deputies remain on the unit.

The San Jose officers have been reassigned to the department's own narcotics unit and the state Bureau of Narcotics task force.

The DEA's Meyer reacted diplomatically to Lansdowne's decision to withdraw his officers from the task force.

"He's certainly entitled to his opinions, and we have great respect for him, " Meyer said. "However, the federal law is very clear when it comes to marijuana, and our mandate is to enforce the laws."

Lansdowne, a 32-year veteran of the San Jose Police Department, the last four as chief, said his responsibilities are clear -- he must follow the state law.

"I think the public made the decision for us that if it's well-managed, it's legal," he said. "Our district attorney believes that, the state believes that, and I believe they're correct, so long as there are controls in place."
Incidentally, Proposition 215 passed with 81 percent of the vote in Santa Cruz and with nearly 63 percent of the vote in San Jose.

PAIR SEEN AS MARTYRS IN EFFORT TO LEGALIZE POT

Arrests, Forfeiture Action Led To Suicide, Their Children Say

Four of the Schilling children showed up for their parents' funeral wearing
T-shirts bearing messages such as, "Dare to know the truth about marijuana."

To them, Dennis and Denise Schilling are martyrs to the cause of legalizing
the use of marijuana, particularly for medicinal purposes. Their parents,
they say, were driven to hang themselves in a Madison motel last month
under the threat of prison and forfeiture of their Big Bend home, the
result of being accused of growing marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms
there with one of their sons, Joshua.

In the couple's death notice, the children included: "Taking care of your
health should not be a crime," a reference to their mother's use of
marijuana, which she said in a suicide note helped her fight mental illness
and chronic pain from a back injury.

Riddle me this batmen and women, Why would Betty Sembler and the Sembler and Sembler Corporation be donating to the campaign of a junior Florida House member who isn't in their district?  Could it be because he is running against a noted drug policy reformer who has done her part to expose the lies being perpetrated on America by Semblers group.  But wait, Sembler and Sembler donated to this freshman Representative before I announced my candidacy; they didn't donate to any other Representative in my area.  I reviewed a dozen house finance reports and the Semblers didn't contribute to any of them.  The Semblers do contribute big to their friend Jeb Bush and the Republican party though.  So, why would the Semblers have an interest in the Representative from Melbourne FL?  Betty's personal contribution to my opponent was noted the same time Mitch got information confirming my previous drug conviction, coincidence?

Could the fact that Melbourne has been a strong hold for reformers since 1994 be significant?  Perhaps Betty has seen the literature distributed statewide that is published by FL CAN in Melbourne.  Think Betty knew that reformers who know what they CAN do protested her home this summer and her offices annually for years?  The FL CAN Melbourne Hemp Museum sits squarely in my opponents district and law enforcement has been used to harass us at every turn.  My opponent is retired law enforcement, another coincidence?

The Semblers think they have a friend in Mitch Needelman that will use his influence to silence statewide reform efforts.  They have spread the word that we are a well funded Soros Legalizers planted here to deceive the people of Florida.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  In August we began fund raising for the remainder of our needed budget.  We asked for help raising 10,000.  To date we have raised $5,000 from among our list of supporters.  We cut salaries not services.

If you aren't invested in drug policy reform in Florida, realize the enemy is totally immersed in locking you up for your beliefs or practices.  A battle line has been drawn in Melbourne.  If you aren't already supporting FL CAN or my campaign for State House, the time is now.  Both need bodies working here and in your area to fight the lies and bring light to this ever pervasive darkness.  Both need funding to keep the work prospering.

I am thrilled that FL CAN and my campaign has gained the attention of the Semblers.  We have met the enemy....

Your in the quest to bring order out of chaos.

What the US President Wants Us To Forget

by Robert Fisk

Each day now, someone says something even more incredible - even more unimaginable - about President Bush's obsession with war. Yesterday, George Bush was himself telling an audience in Cincinnati about "nuclear holy warriors". Forget for a moment that we still can't prove Saddam Hussein has nuclear weapons. Forget that the latest Bush speech was just a re-hash of all the "ifs" and "mays" and "coulds" in Tony Blair's flimsy 16 pages of allegations in his historically dishonest "dossier". Forget that if Osama bin Laden ever acquired a nuclear weapon, he'd probably use it first on Saddam. No. We've got to fight "nuclear holy warriors". That's what we have to do to justify the whole charade through which we are being taken now by the White House, by Downing Street, by all the decaying "experts" on terrorism and, alas, far too many journalists.

Forget the 14 Palestinians, including the 12-year-old child, killed by Israel a few hours before Mr Bush spoke, forget that when his aircraft killed nine Palestinian children in July, along with one militant, the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon - a "man of peace" in Mr Bush's words - described the slaughter as "a great success". Israel is on our side.

Remember to use the word "terror". Use it about Saddam Hussein, use it about Osama bin Laden, use it about Yasser Arafat, use it about anyone who opposes Israel or America. Bush used it in his speech yesterday, 30 times in half an hour - that's one "terrorism" a minute.

But now let's list exactly what we really must forget if we are to support this madness. Most important of all, we absolutely must forget that President Ronald Reagan dispatched a special envoy to meet Saddam Hussein in December 1983. It's essential to forget this for three reasons. Firstly, because the awful Saddam was already using gas against the Iranians - which is one of the reasons we are now supposed to go to war with him.

Secondly, because the envoy was sent to Iraq to arrange the re-opening of the US embassy - in order to secure better trade and economic relations with the Butcher of Baghdad. Thirdly, because the envoy was - wait for it - Donald Rumsfeld. Now you might think it strange that Mr Rumsfeld, in the course of one of his folksy press conferences, hasn't chatted to us about this interesting tit-bit. You might think he would have wished to enlighten us about the evil nature of the criminal with whom he so warmly shook hands. But no.

Strangely, Mr Rumsfeld is silent about this. As he is about his subsequent and equally friendly meeting with Tariq Aziz - which just happened to take place on the day in March, 1984, that the UN released its damning report on Saddam's use of poison gas against Iran. The American media are silent about this too, of course. Because we must forget.

We must forget, too, that in 1988, as Saddam destroyed the people of Halabja with gas, along with tens of thousands of other Kurds - when he "used gas against his own people" in the words of Messrs Bush/Cheney/Blair/Cook/Straw et al - President Bush senior provided him with $500m in US government subsidies to buy American farm products. We must forget that in the following year, after Saddam's genocide was complete, President Bush senior doubled this subsidy to $1bn, along with germ seed for anthrax, helicopters, and the notorious "dual-use" material that could be used for chemical and biological weapons.

And when President Bush junior promises the Iraqi people "an era of new hope" and democracy after the destruction of Saddam - as he did last night - we must forget how the Americans promised Pakistan and Afghanistan a new era of hope after the defeat of the Soviet army in 1980 - and did nothing.

We must forget how President Bush senior urged the Iraqis to rise up against Saddam in 1991 and - when they obeyed - did nothing. We must forget how America promised a new era of hope to Somalia in 1993 and then, after "Black Hawk Down", abandoned the country.

We must forget how President Bush junior promised to "stand by" Afghanistan before he began his bombings last year - and has left it now an economic shambles of drug barons, warlords, anarchy and fear. He boasted yesterday that the people of Afghanistan have been "liberated" - this after he has failed to catch bin Laden, failed to catch Mullah Omar, and while his troops are coming under daily attack. We must forget, as we listen to the need to reinsert arms inspectors, that the CIA covertly used UN weapons inspectors to spy on Iraq.

And of course, we must forget about oil. Indeed, oil is the one commodity - and one of the few things which George Bush junior knows something about, along with his ex-oil cronies Cheney and Rice and countless others in the administration - which is never mentioned.

In all of Bush's 30 minutes of anti-Iraq war talk yesterday - pleasantly leavened with just two minutes of how "I hope this will not require military action" - there wasn't a single reference to the fact that Iraq may hold oil reserves larger than those of Saudi Arabia, that American oil companies stand to gain billions of dollars in the event of a US invasion, that, once out of power, Bush and his friends could become multi-billionaires on the spoils of this war. We must ignore all this before we go to war. We must forget.

Subject: Re: [ibogaine] Subutex and Suboxone (buprenorphine and buprenorphine with
 naloxone) approved
Status:

Trials have been taking place in the UK in the last couple of years at least to my knowledge and a lot longer in France.
I cannot presently remember which pharmacutical company is behind subutex, but there was a huge push over here, complete with hilarious glossy leaflets of a strung out addict on page one and as one turned the pages and learned more about the subutex, the subsequent strung out addict "miraculously" started to look better and better with each picture ;) ..until at the end, he could have modelled for Gap.
From the "official" data i saw about the french experience, addicts seem to
tolerate it well.(but we all know that data can be cooked in so many ways)
I think the neuro-pharmacology of buprenorphine is what appeals to the
treatment "specialists" - that it acts as an agonist for alpha and kappa opiate receptor sites but is an antagonist for the mu site (or is it a mu abd alpha agonist/kappa antagonist-heads a bit fuzzy - im sure someone will correct me if im wrong)
so, anyway, there is less chance of ODing with subutex because of the partial antagonist activity - whilst affording some relief due to its partial agonist activity.
I havent personally done it,so im not speaking from experience but the clinic round our way are touting it as the great white hope - of the (now) former network of users i was plugged into, three of them tried it.
And heres where it CANNOT be taken if opiates are still actively metabolising because of its antagonist effect - all 3 suprisingly did
and went into immediate withdrawal until the blocker effect diminished.
On subsequent occasions I know that one of em did do the full treatment and it did hold him until the dose got cut down, starting at 20mg and going down to 1mg - at which point he waited till the blocker effect stopped and scored.
I had no inkling about suboxone - and i cannot work the neurochemistry out - im thinking surely the naloxone which generates antagonism on all three receptor sites cancels out the agonist effect of the buprennorphine
-obviously i am wrong and should really go and read the article brett provided...
I did do that and i still cannot work it out - perhaps those clued up on the chemistry can tell me.

on one hand the FDA seem to be saying that a treatment of subutex followed by suboxone affords relief from opiate withdrawal and on the other hand, and i quote :

"The most common reported side effect of subutex and subuxone include cold or flu like symptoms, headaches, sweating, sleeping difficulties, nausea, moodswings" -

now it doesnt take a rocket scientist to work out what the FDA are describing are opiate withdrawal symptoms and yet they are marketing the product as alliviating withdrawals - is this some kinda curious double speak - or is there something i am not getting.

OK - I can understand that the SUBUTEX affords some relief from withdrawals - AFTER - the heroin and methadone have done their metabolizing - BEFORE that it acts as a partial antagonist and seeing the state of the guys who took subutex a couple of hours after heroin
i can testify to this.

What i cannot work out is HOW once the buprenorphine is combined with naloxone that has activity on all three receptor sites doesnt cancel out the partial agonist effects of subutex.

I once did naloxone as part of a methadone/heroin detox and its the same as naltrexone - bang!-in minutes you are at the worst part of your turkey - never ever again, fucking ever.

Ahhh, but my former clinic here in the Apple took off all the hot water tap handles and valves handles too. So that was out. Plus, we had to hand the bottle, in a plastic bag, to the guy at the front desk who wore a thin plastic glove and would fondle the bottle as well as shake them up to be sure there wasn't some cold water from the tap added, and that the piss was fresh.
    What a delightful job.

Yeah - mandatory piss tests are a pain for everyone involved in methadone
maintanance programs.
The great irony is that an oral swab test is not only more cost effective
but it affords the treatment provider a greater degree of certainty that
opiates/etc are or are not in the system.
In my own experience at the various methadone clincs ive attended all over
the UK, over the (too many) years, few demanded to watch the urine actually
come out, especially after the first test was completed -
which left it totally open to abuse - "still doing really well, Paul" -
Oh yes, after I'd run some urine that only contained methadone under the hot
tap - (some containers now have a thermal strip to test the temprature - but
you just made sure that someone who actually follows the program is with you
in the toilets) - all bullshit junkie deceit -
but the threat of enforced detox if opiates other than methadone were found
in the system tends to make ya inventive.
Until the day arrives when the presence of any other drug is irrelevant
in terms of your continued methadone maintanance, the only reason i can see
for the continuation of urine tests is for mass spectrum analysis
or gas chromatography(?)-(is that how its spelt) to check out your body
chemistry upon intake.
Oral swabs are more humane, cheaper and more dignified - having said that,
there use would have probably resulted in a few more enforced detox's than i
got ;)

Please subscribe to new MMM email list. Public archive still open.

The public MMM email list at Yahoo Groups now requires people to subscribe
in order to post messages to the list and the public archive. For a few
weeks I set it up so that non-members could also send in email messages to
the list. That was to help people send in MMM rally reports. It worked.
The archive also got some spam too. That was deleted. But people should
keep sending in MMM-related stuff. Just subscribe first.

The MMM message archive itself is still public and accessible to anybody:
