Council OKs pot shop ban
The Salinas City Council voted Tuesday to ban the establishment of a
medical marijuana dispensary in Salinas after a 45-day temporary ban
was set to expire Friday.
City staff and law enforcement have through April 2008 to come up with
a set of ordinances that would officially put the ban into effect.
A report from city legal staff and the police department said a ban
would shield the city from both federal and state legal liabilities
and criminal activity that has come with facilities in other cities.
The council eventually agreed, voting 6-1 in favor of a ban.
Councilwoman Jyl Lutes voted against it, arguing the city could allow
a dispensary with restrictions that address any concerns.
