Description

William H Bates published his pioneering book on Natural Vision improvement 80 years ago.

Bates believed that vision problems arose out of 'mental strains' 'wrong thoughts' and a mind that could not be effortlessly controlled in a natural manner. In his book he clearly states that "Defective vision is the result of an abnormal condition of the mind", but fundamentally he believed that vision problems were environmentally created due to the demands of the culture we were living in, where it could be believed that to do anything well required effort rather than an experience of pleasurable relaxation.

Bates emphasised relaxation of the mind as the best method for creating good vision. It is important to see that his techniques are not about the eyes themselves but rather about a mind that works as nature intended so that it is free from effort and strain. As soon as any kind of effort is required in any particular technique then it is already being 'done' rather than experienced as Bates would have wished

It seems that people who have been most successful with the method have changed their points of view or transformed their lives

Lifestyle changes ties in with the fundamental idea from Bates that each unique vision problem was related to a unique way of using the mind in a way that was not totally natural for that person.
