We just moved from Tacoma Wa last year. We lived in University Place area for 2
years. We had our boys go to UW Autism Center in Tacoma. The boys got 1 hr
every other week-you know week this boy the following week the other. Don't ask
me my thoughts on the whole experience up there. Anyway-Good
Samaritan-Children's Therapy Unit (CTU) in Puyllup-WONDERFUL STAFF & BUILDING!
Did the most in the 6 months they were there actually getting therapy. We were
on a wait list for over a year- yeah- then we moved. And in between UW- they
boys were also on a wait list- then once they got services the person quit- then
on the wait list some more- then the person JUST started working w/ the kids-
went on vacation for 1 month & then we got to move. YEAH! ANYWAY-

Maxim Health care- I need to find their # were in the process of doing the
Autism Demo Project- certification. I dunno know if they got done or not. The
saga of moving & being on wait lists. UGH!

Mary Bourgeois

It doesn't matter if you are Tricare Prime or Standard we all are entitled
to the Tricare ECHO benefit. If qualified! At this point....this really
doesn't pertain to the Tricare Basic which Prime and Standard fall
under.... Tricare ECHO is the only way to get the BCBA services and then if
you
choose to select DEMO for more ABA hours that route may be the choice.
under the DEMO the BCBA still runs the program but then tutors are hired to
follow-through with the program.

Hope this answers your question.... ........

How do you get BCBA services under Tricare Standard?

I can answer these questions:

Unless you want to pay about $4,000 out of pocket don't call/contact outside
network BCBA or tutors. I would call Maximum tomorrow and find out the wait.
They are the only ones right now contracted with ECHO. BCBA are coming from
Seattle and the tutors live here. There are two ways to get BCBA 1) through
Tricare Standard you only work with a BCBA and only get a few hours. 2) Tricare
ECHO/DEMO this will allow about 16 hours who works under a BCBA guide.

The special eds work with ECAP (low income) program. This works in helping your
child mix with "A typical" kids without special needs (role model). Now if Aaron
enters the Autism program this might not happen.

Try this website for ratings. The only problem may be that they don't take data
on special ed.

So far I have heard from a few BCBA providers who would like to be included
on the list of TriCare providers being made available for military parents
being restationed to other bases (being made available on-line that is).
Any BCBA's out there who would like to be included, please send me an email
at SteppingStonesConsulting@.... Also, if you know of other BCBAs
serving the area(s) you serve, please include them as well in the email
(with their permission of course). The larger my list is, the more choices
that gives parents when they move. I would like to have a HUGE list! That
would be great! Parents, if you'd like to send me who your providers are
(assuming they agree to be included in the list), what areas they serve, and
whether they do Echo or both Echo and Demo, I'll add them to the list of
providers. *Also, if there are STs or OTs (or any other providers) you'd
like to send my way, I will make a list for them too - so don't be stingy
with your lists! : ) *Then, I'll forward everything I've got to the new
website Nick mentioned. Thanks, Nick. It's a great idea to have that
website, and I think it will be extremely helpful once finished. I also
noticed on the new website a subheading for dietary restrictions. If help is
needed on gathering information for those who have been diagnosed as having
an intolerance to gluten or who need information to know how to go about
getting tested for the intolerance, just let me know. I've had the
intolerance for years and I'd be happy to share what I know. Have a nice
Thursday! Hopefully all of you are remaining healthier than our house is
right now! We all have the flu! Ugh.

I have heard that the EFMP shop isn't all that good at knowing which bases are
suitable (but they work based on the information they have - I think it's more
the info database is incomplete), which is why it's best to check yourself
first, then contact them. The people that do the assignments are at AFPC at
Randolph AFB in San Antonio (my husband used to work at AFPC). You can speak
with them and explain the situation, they are usually quite helpful.
If your children have a Dr recommendation for therapies that aren't available
(and you haven't been able to get them that much in recent years), then explain
that the assignment is not suitable.
Someone previously said that the needs of the Air Force came first and EFMP
didn't guarantee services, but I asked my husband and he said that's not the
case. If services that are required aren't available, then the AF can't move you
there. Or, if they do, you can request reassignment based on that...
If you aren't getting a call back from Ellsworth, then try contacting the Base
Commander's Action Line. They usually respond to that...

a little worried- UNDERSTATEMENT! EFMP is a VERY BROKEN SYSTEM- they will send
my husband where ever- doesn't if the services are there or not for my kids.

Mary,

All 3 of my kids were diagnosed with special needs in the last 24 months of my
husband's Naval career. First diagnosis was Asperger Syndrome for my then 10
year old and was followed by severe OCD. My youngest child was diagnosed with
severe verbal apraxia and possible OCD. My middle child was just diagnosed this
past February as being legally blind in one eye (20/400) but the pediatric
opthalmologist "missed" the diagnosis at age 3 and age 5 in another state so now
my son is lucky he hasn't gone completely blind in that eye. The last diagnosis
for my youngest - Autism - came just 5 days before my husband's retirement
ceremony this past June.

We never did the EFMP thing because the retirement issue was up in the air and
or focus with the first diagnosis became 100% school-related. So we put all of
our combined energy into a battle which resulted in us emptying our retirement
accounts (more than $80,000.00) to pay for special ed attorneys because a school
district filed Due Process on us to prevent us from getting independent
evaluations.

I will say, that I truly believe this bombardment of diagnoses and denials of
eligibility from both educational and medical sides of the house, really made me
angry. I think I spent much of the first year crying because how could my
perfect children have anything wrong neurologically or physically? But after
that... I became so angry that it made me fight harder than maybe some parents
would fight.

I was angry that the school district didn't know the law as well as I did. I
was angry that the doctors didn't know what to tell me because they didn't know
much about Autism. I was angry with the gate keepers who wouldn't give me the
referrals I needed.

To be honest, the one thing that helped me so much was the legal special ed
fight which led to Independent Educational Evaluations by 4 experts. I had more
than 200 pages of detailed info and recommendations on what my oldest child
needed. I took those to the medical facility and things started moving. I was
then able to get the referrals I needed and no one questioned me.

Also, through the legal fight, I learned to DOCUMENT EVERYTHING! So I started
documenting every person (name, date and time) I talked with in Tricare/Triwest
and I had fabulous records when a dispute came up. I had a paper trail... and I
never hesitated to ask for the supervisor, and their supervisor and so on.

I also started a medical information binder. All three of my kids had a
separate section. The front of the section had a business card plastic holder
and so all specialists' business cards went in there. That was so helpful for
our recent move cross-country.

Don't lose that fighter instinct. For me, the most cathartic thing has been to
PAY IT FORWARD. It took me 15 months to learn how things worked in California
(ie. Regional Centers, resources, Special Ed, etc.) I didn't want other
military families to lose precious time. So I started helping other families
and have started a support group on Facebook to continue to help others.

I think if more parents fight the system, know their rights and learn from other
parents, things will eventually improve.

Good luck to you! It is exhausting.. . isn't it? :)

Mary - I'm not sure there is a category for the AF program. I'm wondering if
that's just the Navy way of doing it?

If you're looking for ABA providers the best thing to do is find out who the
tricare contractor for Ellsworth is, then who the ECHO co-ordinator is for that
region. Call them and ask what is available, then if they have providers, call
them to find out if anyone is able to provide services.
Are you enrolled in EFMP? It's a whole separate assignment process. They're
supposed to check that services are there for your family. If the services that
your children need are not available, then they probably wouldn't move you
there.

Hi,

I agree with Earobics. We actually had to put it on hold with my son due to
him getting everything wrong to hear the eggs crack or the frog jump in the
water. Now he is a little more mature and understands he has to play it
correctly or he doesn't get to play it all. He loves the game its just
sometimes when he gets things wrongs it seems to be more reinforcing to him
to continue to get them wrong.

I have used the DTTrainer and was pleased with it.  You have to use it on a new
computer because if it is a slower one it tends to lose the kids' interest.  It
is very customizable and compatible with a touch screen.  I have not seen
whether or not the skills generalize, though, and would love feedback on whether
it does.

I have also used Earobics.  The speech pathologist I work with thinks highly of
it, but I wasn't too pleased personally.  It makes sounds when things are wrong
that is reinforcing to some children and has caused a few of the ones I worked
with to intentionally get items wrong to hear the big noise or to see the eggs
crack on the floor, etc.

Hope this helps!

FastForWord is a program used for auditory reprogramming. It is very expensive.
Typically, sold to public school systems via a site license, although you may
find it available at facilities that offer speech and language services. In the
school setting children typically do an hour long session each day, five days
per week. The data generated each day is sent to FastForWords central computer
where it is stored and analyzed. Weekly reports can be generated for each child
in order to track their progress, or lack there of. I have seen/heard of mixed
results. Some children do very well with the program, others not so well. Some
start off great but end up topping out after a time. Seems to depend on the
individual child.
A few programs I have used in the past as a teacher, and still use with clients
today are:
Edmark Reading Program- A discrete trial based program that teaches sight words
to non or beginning readers. I have yet to meet a child that did not learn to
read fairly well with this program
Touchmath- A multisensory program used to teach basic math skills to children
(addition and subtraction) .
Science Research Associates (SRA) Math, Reading, Language Arts. Used extensively
in special education classrooms. Discrete trial in format and presentation. Very
effective with most children. However, teachers must typically go through an
extensive amount of training before using these materials in their classrooms. I
don’t recommend a behavior analyst or anyone else simply picking up the
materials and jumping in without receiving the requisite training.
DTTrainer- Discrete Trial based program that teachers hundreds of basic skills
across a variety of domains. Have not used the Activity Trainer but have heard
good things about it.
Other assorted programs:
HeadSprout- Reading program. Haven’t used it myself but have heard very good
things about it. Worth investigating.
Language Tune-Up Kit- Orton-Gillingham type program that teaches phonics.

Hi All,
I was wondering if any parents or providers in this group had heard of Earobics
or the Fast ForWord Program. Please post if you have any information or
experiences to share on these or related products!
Thanks,

(addition and subtraction).

Hi,

We are currently doing both Earobics1 & 2. We alternate them to challenge
my 4 year old. The only problem we see withEarobics is my son loves to get
the exercise wrong to see the object either drop the eggs or the frog jump
in the water. I wish there was a better way to do incorrect responses. It
might not be the ABA way but it works for us. We tell our son if he doesn't
play the game correctly we will turn it off. He immediately stops and plays
correctly. This program requires a child to listen carefully so if a child
is unable to do that then I feel the program is not for them. You can do
this program remotely. You do not have to go into a facility. I know to
become a provider is relatively easy you just have to have the right
certification and do the tutorial and testing online.

We are starting the Fast ForWord program in January. The only problem with
Fast ForWord is the expense. The providers sometimes charge up to $2000 for
the program. My BCBA is the one who suggested Fast ForWord for my child and
she says its an awesome program. So in January I can give you feedback on
this program. Our BCBA is going to be a provider for us to cut the costs
down.

My son loves the DT Trainer.
http://www.dttrainer.com/jos/content/view/12/120/ This program helped my
son to listen and follow directions plus teach and review what we were doing
in ABA. He also likes the activity trainer as well.

Not sure if you just want reading programs but if not. Alphabet beats is a
great writing program. Handwriting without tears is good too. We do them
together. My son is visual so he loves the DVD.

Good Luck,

Ketzie

Fast ForWord was recommended for my son when we had an Independent Educational
Evaluation done. However, we were stationed at NAS Lemoore, California and
trying to find someone who knew something about it was almost impossible. I did
finally locate a facility in Fresno, California who offered it, but it was an
hour's drive away from the base and I was never able to work that around
schedules.

I did call the director of the center and found that they accepted
Tricare/Triwest and that there were options to do it remotely, but we had 20+
appointments for services, doctors, etc. (3 kids with special needs) that I
wasn't able to follow up on that possibility.

We've since moved to another state and it's on my long list of to do items.

Hello everyone. I joined this group several months ago and I have enjoyed
reading the updates and opinions of all the members. Scott Campbell’s
updates are very helpful; thanks for the tips on maintaining a bug-free,
pesticide-free home – and perfect timing for our house. We just had an
issue with that this morning, as a matter of fact. It’s also nice to read
comments regarding the services provided at different US bases. It would be
so helpful to military families if a listing was made available online of
the BCBA providers at all military locations. From reading everyone’s
comments, it seems like having a list posted online would make it much
easier for military families as they move from one location to the next. I
have attempted to pursue this, but have not yet received listings for the
north and south regions. If anyone is interested in helping to pursue this,
please let me know! TriWest does list their providers online, which is
wonderful for all those living in the west. Go TriWest! If you would like
to see the listing of providers for the west region, and missed the message
I listed previously, let me know and I’ll forward you the link and
directions for locating the list on their site. I do hope the north and
south regions will follow suit in the near future by providing a list of
providers online as well.

I live in Loxley, Alabama, and I would like to take this opportunity to
remind members of the services I provide. I am a Board Certified Behavior
Analyst and I can travel to serve clients from the Pascagoula, Mississippi
area to Pensacola, Florida. The services I provide include, but are not
limited to, assessment/evaluation, comprehensive in-home or on-site ABA
programs to teach verbal behavior, learning, academic, social, and self-help
skills. If anyone would like more information about my services, please
email me at SteppingStonesConsulting@.... I would be happy to provide
additional information regarding my services at that time.

I also know of another BCBA serving Pensacola to Destin, Florida. If you
would like her contact information, just let me know and I’d be happy to
provide it.

Thanks. Have a wonderful Tuesday.

So how many people are on here for advise and how many people are on here to get
free advertising? I notice when I have a question parents seem to be the ones
giving advise (which is great) but I never hear a BCBA tell me her/his advise,

I am a BCBA in Maryland, serving families stationed at Ft. Meade,
Annapolis Naval Station, Bethesda Naval Hospital, and surrounding
areas. I know of some other BCBA's in the area, as well as BCBA's
serving some other military bases in other states that I don't serve.
I would be more than willing to help a family to locate a BCBA, or be
involved in helping you to generate lists for the North region.
