Well, I am new to all this. My son is only 3. We are however on the Exceptional
Family Members Program (EFMP). Once you are enrolled in that, they will give you
a category (1-4). We are category 4, I'm not completely sure what all that means
yet, I do know though that it got us bumped to to the top of the housing list.
The EFMP enrollment packet needs to be filled out by the drs and his school and
that will help them determin what category he is. I know in some cases, your
orders are limited. My friend Jodie, her second son was on EFMP (he isn't
autistic, it was medical), they had to stay stationed near a major medical
facility, which at that time was Balboa in San Diego. He is better now, and she
has since unenrolled themselves from EFMP so they could take new orders.
Getting new orders isn't always a last minute thing. At least it hasn't been
for us, my husband is in the Navy. When you get orders you should be assigned a
sponser, someone who is already in your husbands squadron/unit that is supposed
to help you out....you should be able to get in touch with them and ask your
questions, and they can look into things for you.
I hope this helps a little bit.

I remarried this past Dec. I already have a 14 year old son with
autism-low functioning. My husband plans to join the army in the
fall. Our concern is-will the military help with placement for our
son. He is in a residential school because he cannot handle change
at all. He must have a strict schedule. What happens when you get
orders? Can you find out sooner so we can check with schools where
we are going? Who covers expenses and what do they cover? I know
nothing about the military and welcome any advise from someone in
similar situation.
