RE: [Military Families Autism Support] Federal Register Autism Pilot Project Announcement (UNCLASSIF
Scott---
Thanks for the info!:)
Couple questions. Is there a way to get enrolled in ECHO program with a PDD
DX?? I was told it must be autism.
I have a 7 year old with autism and a 5 year old with a PDD DX. My 7 year old is
always regresses due to my 5 year olds issues.
We really need a behavior program for my 5 year old but have been denied RC
twice. I would love to hear your advice!!
Also, is ECHO ever going to cover RDI??
Thanks,
Michelle G.

Autism Pilot Project Announcement (UNCLASSIFIED)
Classification: UNCLASSIFIED Caveats: NONEFolks, the attached file has the
Federal Register Autism Pilot ProjectAnnouncement. We were hoping this would
have been published a couple ofmonths ago, since it is basically just a
regurgitation of the report toCongress from July. Now, the demo with the new
TRICARE standards forABA "tutors" under the ECHO Program will likely not begin
until 60 daysafter today, or 2 February 2008 at the earliest. I have been
tellingeveryone that it would happen around the end of January, so I am not
toofar off. I would give a copy of this to your current or potential
ABAproviders, so they are aware of the new rules that are in this document. What
is not here is the specific requirements for the hiring, trainingand supervision
of the ABA "tutors". As stated in paragraph E,"requirements for TRICARE
authorized IBI Tutors and IBI Supervisors willbe detailed prior to the start of
the demonstration project in theTRICARE Operations Manual, available at
(
http://manuals.tricare.osd.mil<
http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/leaving.\
cgi?from=leavingFR.html&log=linklog&to=http://manuals.tricare.osd.mil> )." So,
we will have towait until the changes are published in the TRICARE Operations
Manualbefore any actual changes in the definition of a TRICARE-authorized
ABAprovider can really be implemented. Also, this is not the end of the change
process. Karen Driscoll, I andothers are continuing to work on better
establishing with TRICARE themedical necessity of ABA and other behavioral
interventions for militarykids with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and other
cognitivedisabilities for all active duty and retired families. The hope is
togain eventual implementation of either no cost ceiling for the ABA orthe
movement of ABA and other behavioral interventions out of the ECHOprogram and
into the basic TRICARE program as medically-necessaryhabilitative care. With
only 5% of the estimated 20,000 (not 7,000 to9,000 listed in this announcement)
active-duty military kids with ASDsgetting some minimal amount of ABA, the
current state of medical carefor them is simply unacceptable. If you personally
know a senator orcongressman (or their lead legislative staff member) who may be
willingto help with this cause, please let me know, so that we can bettereducate
them on the existing, typically pathetic medical services for mykid and yours. If
you have any questions about this announcement or the likely changesin TRICARE
policy, please CALL me. Do NOT send an email, since I willjust ask you to call
me. I do not have the time to try to guess thereal questions you may have via
email, so please call me instead (butnot after 10pm). Thanks! ScottOffice 703
