Hi -
I can tell you about Ft Drum.
We lived on post at Drum. No schools on post and all the kids go to
school in the Indian River School District.
BJ started receiving services at approx 2 yrs, 9 mos. The speech
therapist and the OT saw him at the child development center on post.
Summers he went mornings to a special preschool program w/speech and
OT in Watertown. They provided door to door bus service - oh how hard
it was to let him ride that bus by himself! But they took good care
of him
Once he started KDG, his services were at school and he got fantastic
services!! Oh HOW WE WISH we still had those services and service
providers! If you can, request that he attend Evans Mills Primary
school simply because that was where BJ did KDG and he got such
tremendous services there......prior to attending there, he did 1 yr
that was supposed to be a split between spec ed classroom and
mainstream KDG.....but for some reason he rarely got to go to KDG
classroom - that was pretty much a wasted year.....but that was at
Calcium Primary - it is also a good little school.
His sister went to Philadelphia Primary for KDG, then to Evans Mills
Primary for 1st and 2nd and had VERY POSITIVE experiences.
I don't know if your son has completed KDG already or not, but if he
hasn't, ask for Mrs Kirker at Evans Mills Primary school! She and her
aide Mrs Toutant are a 'dynamic duo' and BJ just thrived and blossomed
under them!
Since his big sister in into gymnastics, we decided to give it a try
for him as well -- provide more sensory integration help - and there
is an excellent gym run by Shawna Gee. It is in the Ultimate Fitness
center in Watertown and she was super working with BJ and younger
brother Brett.
We moved at the end of his KDG year. We ate now at Ft Jackson and the
kiddos attend DOD schools on post. BJ had the most terrific 1st and
2nd grade teachers -- and he now has his 1st grade teacher for 3rd
grade. I'd say that 99% of the teachers here are fantastic. BUT we
have been less than thrilled with the quality of the services he has
received. His younger brother is also on the spectrum and our
experiences with his services have been less than stellar!
The services the boys got from early intevention through the child
development center and then the services received in the Indian River
School District were simply outstanding and excellent. We left there
in May, 2003 so hopefully, the quality of services have not fallen in
that length of time.
Good luck~!!
