Dear colleagues.  Over the last two years, Migrant Clinicians Network has become active with the American Public Health Association – Occupational Health Section.  Below please find a call for abstracts for the Occupational Health Disparities Institute, part of the OHS Section.  This Institute offers an excellent opportunity for migrant researchers and practitioners to highlight their efforts. Please consider submitting an abstract to this year’s meeting in San Diego (October 2008). The theme of this year’s meeting is Public Health without Borders.

The Occupational Health Disparities Institute of the American Public Health Association's (APHA) Occupational Health and Safety section would like to invite you to submit abstracts by February 6, 2008 for the 136th annual meeting in San Diego, California. The Occupational Health Disparities Institute (OHDI) is soliciting proposals for 1.5 hour scientific sessions and abstracts of individual presentations on disparities in occupational health, including issues of immigrant, migrant and minority worker groups, the intersection of social justice and occupational health, and international and border occupational health disparities. OHDI is particularly interested in the submission of well-planned 1.5 hour sessions, including those that are multidisciplinary or co-planned with other APHA sections, SPIGS and caucuses.

The Occupational Health Disparities Institute was initiated in 2007 to highlight scientific sessions addressing disparities in work-related health, promote discussion and collaboration across sections, and sponsor and encourage special scientific sessions, events and publications devoted to addressing disparities in work-related illnesses and injuries.

If you have any questions about OHDI, please contact one of the co-chairs listed below. If you have questions about preparing or submitting an abstract or proposal for a 1.5 hour session, please contact the OHS section program planner Peter Dooley at LaborSafe@....  Thank you very much for your interest, and don't hesitate to contact us if you need more information.

_______Call for Abstracts____________________________________

Occupational Health and Safety

The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Section welcomes abstracts on topics related to workers’ health and safety for the 136th Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association. This year's meeting is titled, “Public Health Without Borders.” We are particularly interested in abstracts for papers or abstracts for full sessions that reflect this theme in the context of occupational health and safety.

Topics of particular interest to the OHS Section are:

Domestic and international health and safety program evaluation,

     Effective health and safety interventions,

Policy and regulation that impacts workers’ health and safety

     Union/community-based projects

Social justice and human rights related to occupational health and safety

Integration of health promotion/wellness and occupational health/safety in the workplace

Surveillance of work-related injuries and illnesses, particularly novel methods and projects that address undercounting/under-reporting

The future of occupational safety and health

Health and safety issues and programs that address immigrant, minority, younger and older workers; other vulnerable populations of workers

Health and safety design systems or ‘built-in’ safety

Addressing emerging technologies and protection of exposed workers

     Translation of research into practice

Other topics of current interest to OHS

The Occupational Health Disparities Institute seeks proposals for 90 minute sessions  or individual presentations on disparities in occupational health, including issues of immigrant, migrant and minority worker groups, the intersection of social justice and occupational health, and international and border occupational health disparities.

All submissions should inform and encourage discussions at the meeting. Please refer to the list of suggested topics and consider how your abstract may contribute to the Annual Meeting's theme. Deadline for abstract submission is February 6, 2008, 11:59 PM (EST).

Presentation format:

You are invited to submit an abstract for a poster, oral or roundtable presentation, or a 90 minute session. The OHS strongly encourages the submission of proposals for organized sessions of 3-5 presentations on one of the topics listed above. You may submit a proposal for a 90-minute session at this time by submitting individual abstracts for each presentation, or submitting an overall abstract for the session, with the intent to submit individual abstracts later.  Your abstract should describe the role, point-of-view, or perspective brought by each of the anticipated/proposed speakers. Preference will be given to sessions that are coordinated with other APHA Sections. Please indicate whether your session is to be considered for CE credit and in what discipline(s).

Please contact Peter Dooley (laborsafe@...), Program Chair, if you are interested in organizing a session for the 2008 meeting.

Submitters should refer to APHA’s general guidelines for further information on poster, oral and roundtable formats, and indicate the desired format on your abstract page. Student abstracts are strongly encouraged and will be included throughout the program of OHS sessions. Also, please indicate if you will have any special technical needs (e.g., internet access, film, multi-media capability, etc.).

All abstracts received by the deadline will be blind-reviewed by Section members and ranked for originality, interest, importance to the field of occupational health and safety, and bearing on the theme of the Annual Meeting. If you need assistance preparing your abstract, please do not hesitate to contact the OHS Program Planner.

Submit your abstract at:
