Note: Attached is a short
summary of what you will find at the site.
The DHHS Office of Minority Health recently announced the release
of an interactive Web-based learning tool designed to help health professionals
plan, implement, and evaluate language access services (LAS) within their
organizations. The “Health care Language Services Implementation
Guide” is available at no cost to health care providers (access requires
registering) at www.thinkculturalhealth.org or
directly at https://hclsig.thinkculturalhealth.org/user/home.rails.
The Guide features an interactive content presentation, multimedia-based case
studies that underscore the importance of LAS, and interactive worksheets to
help with planning, implementation, and evaluation of LAS in your organization.
OMH has sponsored the
development of this guide to help healthcare organizations implement effective
LAS to meet the needs of their patients with limited English proficiency (LEP),
thereby increasing their access to health care. The guide can help you get
started. As your community and your organization evolve over time, you can use
the guide to assist you with the evolution of your LAS. The guide lays out the
basic steps for implementing LAS, and the process for carrying out each step is
explained in detail and supplemented with links to resources and tips on
alternative ways to complete the step. Sample resources include interpreter
qualifications checklist, examples of Medical Interpreter job descriptions,
funding sources for LAS, policies and procedures for working with interpreters,
and many others. A must see for anyone serving limited english populations!
