SJFMC Migrant Outreach works with migrant and seasonal farmworkers (MSFWs)
in five counties of southern New Jersey, and is based out of community
health center in Hammonton, located approximately 45 minutes from
Philadelphia, PA. The MSFW population in these counties at the height of the
picking season is estimated at 20,000, many of whom face a number of
barriers in
gaining access to quality healthcare, including financial capacity,
language, geographical isolation, lack of transportation, and residential
documentation status. As members of the Outreach team, Outreach Specialists
work in multiple ways to assist farmworkers in surmounting the barriers that
they face in accessing healthcare.

The Outreach team visits MSFWs in labor camps and other farmworker
"hotspots" in order to conduct health assessments and spread awareness of
the services SJFMC offers. The Outreach team also conducts blood pressure
and blood sugar
screenings, STD/HIV screenings, and promotes preventative health by
conducting extensive and varied health education activities. Some health
education activities, or "charlas" include nutrition, healthy camps, sun
safety, diabetes, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, STDs, alcohol and drug abuse, and
basic first aid. The Outreach team provides other services to MSFWs as well,
including but not limited to interpretation, transportation, case
management, assistance with medication and diagnostic exams, and English
Survival skills and basic literacy classes.

The Migrant Outreach Coordinator is responsible for planning, developing,
and implementing the provision of health education, outreach, and social
services to migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the South Jersey area,
including but not limited to the aforementioned activities. During the
harvest season (approx. April - October), Migrant Outreach Coordinator works
with a team of 12 Outreach Specialists and/or Drivers in their efforts to
assist MSFWs in surmounting the barriers they face in accessing healthcare.
During the off season, the Migrant Outreach Coordinator continues outreach
duties but has more time to formulate plans for the following season.
