Field Project Coordinator

 

Justicia y Salud para los Trabajadores Avícolas

(JUSTA)

Justice and Health for Poultry Workers

 

Funding is expected in September 2004, for JUSTA, a 4-year project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.  The project goals are (1) to work with Latino community-based organizations in western North Carolina to improve the occupational and environmental health of poultry industry workers and their families, (2) to document the knowledge and experience of poultry worker families with health risks at work and at home; and (3) to develop and deliver culturally and linguistically  appropriate educational materials and programs to promote ways to prevent or reduce the effects of health risks on workers and families.

 

JUSTA is a community-based participatory project.  It is a collaboration between Centro Latino of Caldwell County, Inc., and Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, NC.  The Field Project Coordinator will be an employee of Centro Latino.  The worksite will be in Lenoir, NC, which is about 80 miles from Winston-Salem.  Regular travel between the two areas will be required.

 

The Field Project Coordinator is a full-time professional position under the supervision of the Project Coordinator and the Principal Investigator.  Working collaboratively with the Project Coordinator, the Field Project Coordinator will provide day-to-day coordination of project activities and communication among project investigators and community members.  During Project Year 1, s/he will be active in data collection and conducting in-depth and survey interviews.  During Project Years 1 and 2 s/he will participate in the design of the health education materials and the health promoter program.  During Project Years 3 and 4 s/he will participate in the training and follow-up of lay health promoters.  Throughout the project s/he will be involved in field data collection and will assist with ongoing analysis.  During the final year, s/he will participate in reporting project results and disseminating the health promoter program materials.

 

Minimum qualifications for the position are a Bachelor’s degree in social and behavioral science, public health, or related field.  Fluent speaking and writing ability in Spanish and English are also required.  The ideal candidate will have strong communication and organizational skills, and some research and community or health education experience.  Starting salary will be $27,000 - $30,000 per year, plus benefits, based on education and experience.
