I asked for an answer from someone I know that is
legally blind and has used the services in her state.
I hope this helps explain things ok.
To answer a question for any medical condition
services the best, would need a state. No matter if
it's not the state the asker resides in, just need to
know what state to look into .
Since have no idea what state to check, the answer is
from the State of WA, USA:
The Washington State Department of Services for the
Blind (DSB) is a state rehabilitation agency that
offers assistance to persons who are blind or visually
impaired. From: www.dsb.wa.gov
Our Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) staff assists
participants as they explore career possibilities,
plan their career future, and gain the necessary
alternative skills of blindness, academic training,
and specific job skills. Go to:
www.dsb.wa.gov/vres.htm
Access to information technology is a key to
successful employment. Our Assistive Technology (AT)
specialists help participants evaluate their
technology and skill development needs. We provide
training on the use of computers and a wide range of
access technology, including low vision aides. We
evaluate job sites to determine what technology
solutions are needed to enable the employee who is
blind or visually impaired to work effectively. Go to:
www.dsb.wa.gov/at.htm
The Business Enterprise Program (BEP) trains and
licenses legally blind people to manage snack/gift
shops, espresso stands and food service facilities in
government buildings. Go to: www.dsb.wa.gov/bep.htm
Our Independent Living (IL) program provides
instruction and equipment to people with visual
disabilities who are not seeking employment, primarily
those who are age 55 and older, so they can maintain
or improve their independence in their home and
community. Go to: www.dsb.wa.gov/il.htmwww.dsb.wa.gov
Our Child and Family (C&F) Consultants provide
assistance to families and schools to assure blind and
visually impaired children receive the services
necessary to achieve full educational, social and
vocational integration in their school and community.
For parents of blind children, services include
in-home consultations, parent education workshops and
newsletters. The Child and Family Program also
sponsors career education and work experience programs
for middle and high school age youth. Go to:
www.dsb.wa.gov/cf.htm
Our Seattle Orientation and Training Center (OTC)
provides a comprehensive and intensive training
program in communications: Braille and computers,
orientation and mobility, home management, and
adjustment to blindness. The program offers many
opportunities for social, recreational and
confidence-building challenge activities, as well as
real work experience. Students may live in apartments
as an extension of their experience in the center.Go
